The Sixties on CNN
Ten-part series on CNN. The first episode was "Television Comes of Age," and it made me smile throughout. Nothing groundbreaking, but it evoked some great memories (shared by many/most of us here, I imagine). All of my teen years were in the sixties, and that decade formed me in so many ways.
Tom Hanks is one of the producers and spoke about everyone gathering to watch The Wonderful World of Color and how amazing and psychedelic all the color seemed to us. My great aunt and uncle were the only ones in my family who had a color TV, so we all drove over there on special occasions. Of course, watching involved a lot of fiddling with the color knobs, which was the job of the kids. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series! The Sixties - CNN.com |

I loved the Golden Age of Television shows, with all of the great comedians. I was a television junkie back then!!!!! |

Loved the show.. highly recommend it.. I remember babysitting and they had the first color TV in the neighborhood.. I couldn't wait for the kids to go to bed so I could be a "big shot" and watch in color..

We had one of the first sets, a huge console cabinet. I think the only shows were Bonanza and the Flintstones. You had to constantly play with the hue buttons to give old Hoss the right rosy glow-LOL.
Seeing the NBC Peacock was a big thing. |
Thanks for the reminder. Set to record the series.

I have surprisingly detailed memories of certain episodes of The Twilight Zone -- some of that scariness burrowed in deep! Quote:

Anyone else have Winky Dink? You put this clear plastic thing on the screen and write and draw along with the show. Found out that doing it without the plastic was not a good thing. Who knew?
My favorite look for 60's TV was when the big arse console TV would break (like all the time) and the repairman would pull the guts to take it to the shop. Then you would have the empty cabinet with the little TV on top of it. |
