Big dog concerns
 

Hi I'm Debbie from Long Island, ( hubby is Sicknotto) Need some info on bringing a lg. dog (Malamute) to the Villages. Do you think he will like it there. I know its hot, but he will have to get used to ,like me!! LOL I saw one of the dog parks (by the fire dept.) while I was there last time, and was wondering if their were certain places in each Village to walk him. Any info will help. Thanks!

The good news is they a building a doggie rec center in The Village of Fruitland Park. The bad news is if your dog poops or pees you need to teach him to do so in your yard or in the street if he needs to walk to get things going. In the summer you must do this either very early or late in the day 'cause the street gets so hot he will burn his feet. Until the doggie rec center is built I understand Doggie Do Run is a great place for your fur friend to enjoy some freedom and interact with other dogs if that is his thing. Give it a try - if it works, it works - if it doesn't this is the best place in the world to have to sell your home!

of course your dog will do well here. The same precautions apply to them that apply to us + a dose of common sense.

C'mon down and join the 95%+++ of us who are responsible dog owners and, like us, ignore the minority reports regarding dog issues.

I second that. I've seen various breeds of large dogs here in the villages.

i am from Long island and all my LI friends who have dogs LOVE it here... if the pavement is to warm for the dogs, make sure you have a spot in your yard where thay can releive themselves... dont worry - you'll be fine!!! WELCOME!

There are three dog friendly leash-free parks in The Villages. These parks are fenced in play areas for both large and small dogs so the dogs can run freely and socialize with other dogs. These parks also have doggy amenities like water and waste stations and people amenities like benches and pleasant scenery. The Villages Dog Parks are:
•Paradise Park – east side of golf cart bridge
•Mulberry- Belle Meade Circle adjacent to the fitness trail near the Village of Springdale
•Brinson/Perry – 1231 Bonita Boulevard

Hours: 7am – Dusk

Dog Park users must be 13 years of age or older and must have their Villages Resident ID card or a valid guest ID card and a photo ID. Guest 13-18 years of age must be accompanied by a Village resident or guest 19 years of age or older.

Further information is available at the entrance to the dog parks or call 674-1800.

A malamute is not going to like the heat and humidity. He will love the attention and love most Villagers will bestow on him. Most dogs here are pretty friendly and, like their owners, like to say hi to their new friends.

As has been said, there are many places where your big boy can have room to run and walking around neighborhoods is usually welcome (barring a few curmudgeons). Do respect other people's property, pick up after your boy and take it home (don't dump it down the drain or drop it off at the mailboxes).

Pets, regardless of size, are showered with love here. Once he learns to cope with the heat, he'll be fine.

Doggie Doo Run is wonderful for a large dog. $3per visit or $25 per month. The other dog parks are just too small for a large dog IMO. We take our 100 lb lab almost every day. A great couple owns it and the other dog owners could not be nicer. Located off of 466, on CR 101. Take turn at the CVS. They have water, clean up after and have lots of chairs so you can sit in the shade. They also board dogs

As I type my house is full of boxes and the movers are coming tomorrow for my journey to TV with my big boys so I understand your concerns about moving to TV with a large dog. I have borzoi (Russian Wolfhounds) and they also need to adjust to heat and space issues. There are so many wonderful, amazing doggie people here on the forum that have dogs and deal with their dogs effectively in TV that I am sure it can be done happily if, as others have said, you have common sense and respect the property of others with a little more effort than was necessary if you lived in a rural area back in LI. Some of TVs dog parks are better than others but DDR is very wonderful and I am also looking forward to the new dog space TV is building. Good luck with your decision. TV is a wonderful place for both humans and dogs.

We have a large dog and take him daily to Doggie Doo Run Run for the six months we live in TV. DDRR is situated on CR 101, about a mile north of CR 466 and Southern Trace Plaza.

Actually, we have two dogs, and we pay $30 per month for both, which is a great deal. Ten acres, separate facilities for large and small dogs, small "soaking" tubs in both areas. You will meet really nice people who share your love of dogs.

Our dogs love DDRR and so do we.

This YouTube http://youtu.be/5fE_h84b3ws will give you an idea about Doggie Doo Run Run. There are some dogs, however, that are too submissive, aggressive, or rambunctious to go there.

This is an older YouTube from June 2009. There have been a few chances since it was taken at DDRR. A pool in the big dog section is one of these and there are some additional fences meant to stop the fence running where the dogs bark at one another which you see in the YouTube.

I had a wonderful rescue Siberian Husky here in TV. We moved here from Ohio.Big dogs are very welcome as they are not as plentiful as the little guys, and draw attention. I recommend PAWS Hospital for vet care,they did a great job. You are right to be concerned about heat. Our Willow dog did blow her undercoat often ,be prepared . She loved laying on the tile floor and I put ice cubes in her water bowl. Do not have her shaved as the coat protects, and the sun is very strong on skin.

Tal, that's an excellent video to show the size of Doggie Doo Run Run, the privately-owned dog park.
It's immense in comparison to the small dog parks provided by The Villages.
We find DDRR excellent for our big dog.
And even our tiny dog loves to run with the greyhounds and rottweilers, who are surprisingly gentle.
And we enjoy socializing with other dog lovers while our dogs have a wonderful play time.

Two advantages of the three small dog parks provided by The Villages ....
They are free, and they are accessible by golf cart.
(The cost to us for unlimited visits to DDRR for our two dogs is only $30 a month - to us, that's a terrific bargain. And they pick up the poop!)

And now we hear the excellent news of a Villages dog facility to be built south of CR 466A. :MOJE_whot:

It does cover pets and golf carts. I always tie my dog into the golf cart with the leash and only like shorter leashes which will not get entangled in moving parts.

Here's a set of slides from the big field ay Doggie Doo Run Run. It is about a 5 acre sized piece of land that any sized dogs can go. It has some trees for shade and a swing. There is only water at the west side however. Some people carry water bottles to give water to their pooches in any parts of this big field.

We moved from CT two years ago and brought our rather larger than normal Aussie (80 lbs) and I do clip him in the spring and summer. His hair is so thick he still has a good covering from the sun. And I know he appreciates the cut. Our home has laminate throughout other than the laundry room and bathrooms. He spends a lot of time in those rooms in the summer. I walk him in the morning and in the evening (always with a bag in hand in the event...) but during the summer never during midday. The streets are really dangerous on their paws. I don't leave him outside for too long in the summer. But they do adjust. Just as we do. If you have a pool, he will be really happy :)

They do have booties for dogs that will protect their feet. The pavement is very hot in the summer. Evening and early mornings are best to walk your dog.
