Boy - some storm tonight!

We had a rough ride home around 5pm from the movies in Lake Sumter (Jersey Boys, loved it) dodging flooded golf cart paths and seeing flooded Virginia and Allamanda courses. What a storm. We could hear the rain and thunder while movie was playing and when we got home my patio furniture, which is really heavy, was rearranged by heavy winds, jasmine climbing up a metal trellis knocked over and bent trellis. Neighbors (Pennecamp) said we had very heavy winds and hail.

A typical Florida summer.

Dr Winston O Boogie jr 07-12-2014 09:32 PM

Amazing. I'm about four miles from LSL and we only got a brief shower.

Bonanza 07-12-2014 11:46 PM

Yes, this was an awful storm. One of our trees was blown down.

This torrential rain only confirms what I already know:
Most lots in TV were not filled enough to provide drainage into the swails. Most of them are also poorly graded.

DougB 07-12-2014 11:59 PM

Fortunate just a little gully washer in this section.

N44125 07-13-2014 04:49 AM

Anyone have any rain amounts?

graciegirl 07-13-2014 05:11 AM

I remember three, no maybe four years ago we got seven inches of rain in 24 hours and there was ONLY some standing water in the road in either Caroline or Marllory, but everyone else commented on how well the carryoff systems here work. The sprinklers come on in all of the common areas when the water in the retention ponds rise, to keep them from overflowing.

I really am just a huge fan, kids. I don't have to sell this place, there aren't enough lots to go around and people are standing in line. I just have to say that I think the opposite is true. If the grading isn't right, which was the case in our neighborhood, "they" came back and put in a French drain, and regraded. It happened to two lots in our not quite three year old village.

I really don't mean to start an argument, but that is my opinion. Happinow had some grading issues I remember. The mostly sand base here usually wicks away water in an hour after a gully washer.

4" recorded by rain gage

A neighbor down the road in Sanibel measured 4"! That's a lot of rain in a short amount of time. As Gracie mentioned, we did have a huge drainage problem but that was remedied....thank goodness!! Some lots don't drain as well as others but all in all the drainage here is pretty good.

It does not a lot longer with some lots to drain. They did do a very good job of planning for these rainy seasons in Central Florida.

Yep, left lots of standing water, but it went away pretty quickly.

Well that might be true in some areas, but south of 460 6A there is a lot of clay. Sadly, it's mostly fill dirt.

dengid 07-13-2014 08:41 AM

We had 4" in Hemmingway

graciegirl 07-13-2014 08:47 AM

Paper said a house struck by lightning in Belvedere.

golf2140 07-13-2014 08:58 AM

3.6 in Bonita. It all drained away !!!

patfla06 07-13-2014 09:01 AM

It was really bad here in Gilchrist, with 3-4 inches of rain.
Glad we were home.

champion6 07-13-2014 09:30 AM

1.9" in Tamarind Grove.

saratogaman 07-13-2014 09:36 AM

It seemed like only minutes after the lightning struck I heard the fire truck!:crap2:

spk7951 07-13-2014 10:46 AM

Had 3.1" of rain from the Saturday storm at our Hadley home. That is in addition to 2.8" on Friday evening.
Neighbor & I are starting to talk about prospects for building an ark.

Matzy 07-13-2014 11:33 AM

We are living south of 466A, and during the storm I saw our outside BBQ moving away, even the wheels were blocked. It stopped moving when it rolled into the grass.

Gracie -- We all know you are a huge fan and I think it's wonderful that you have the attitude you do. No, there is no argument -- not from me, anyway! :icon_wink:

We, too had a terrible drainage problem. "They" came and fixed it -- extensive French drains (more than one), etc. They had to come twice! It is much better than it was but is far from really being fixed because the lot was never prepared correctly to begin with. Unless you remove the house and start all over with enough fill and then proper grading, it can never be what it should be. So in the meantime, we are still walking in mushy grass until a couple of days pass.

It just bothers me considering the price we paid that things such as this weren't done right to begin with. Unfortunately, we also have other issues with our house, and it has taken its toll on our nerves and outlook. I'm speaking about things that should be right and aren't, and for the most part, we have little or no recourse. I guess one way or the other, this too shall pass.

40% damaged.

I think it might be a good idea that everyone posts the date of the storm, as we are having them daily..........just sayin.
