How you can spot a brand new golfer.

This morning, Sweetie and I played with a villager golfer and his young grandson of about ten years. He was a great kid, shook our hands and waited his turn and really acted like a grown up all the way around. He was amazing with his woods and really did a good job and we enjoyed his company very much and his grandfathers too.

We had to smile when he teed it up in the fairway, but he isn't the first one I have seen do that here.

Just for fun, what are some other things you have seen that makes you know right away that it is a brand new golfer?

Bonny 07-13-2014 11:27 AM

They pull out the driver for 75 yards

graciegirl 07-13-2014 11:28 AM

Here's another way to spot a group of new golfers. They mess around after they are finished putting and don't drive quickly to the next tee.

Help me here before all of the new golfers think I am mean spirited.

I know people here 14 years and still stand there and talk. If I am all ready to hit, sometimes I'll just yell, could you move please.

A new Golfer has an old set of clubs that they bought at a yard sale.

perrjojo 07-13-2014 11:57 AM

They are wearing cute matching golf clothes and and scuff free shoes.

jebartle 07-13-2014 11:58 AM

New golfer usually

line up their 7th putt, oh my, that was my last round...Ha!

And there is a problem with this how??? Doesn't everyone? :sigh:

sharoni 07-13-2014 01:17 PM

Thanks for the heads up everyone. My husband and I are new to TV and we are back in MI taking lessons. We didn't want to look like idiots when we come back down in October. So, please post other things us new golfers do, so we can "try" not to do them, lol. A lot to learn that we won't learn from our instructor!

I know someone who uses a driver on 75 yards. Makes it 1/2 way there, tees up in the fairway now 35 yards away and pulls the driver back out. LOL ;)

steamdogman 07-13-2014 02:44 PM

And if I may comment....................On executive golf courses one should not expect either the quality of play or the speed that you would expect on the championship courses. So if I take out a driver on every hole, say at Heron what is wrong with that! Is this not what it is all about here??????

Perhaps you all forget when you were learning how to play. Do you realize how many people here retire than take up golf.........................It is not an easy game and I am saying that from over 60 years of playing.

Give them a BREAK OR GO PLAY ON CHAMPIONSHIP COURSES!

I think I play with the same guy. Then they'll be on the fringe of the green and pull out the pitching wedge. Watching a newbie choose clubs gets comical at times.

Obviously you've been watching me golf. :o
I'm not a new player, but I'm certainly a duffer.

asianthree 07-13-2014 02:53 PM

I like the old guys who grumbles about having to play with a women. They are usually the guys I can out drive from the same tees..and I never ask them if they might want to play from the shoes tees...I just smile:girlneener:

I have been at it for 63 years, play off a 7, and I use a wedge from the fringe if I'm facing a long putt. I can control my distance better with backspin than with putter weight.

zonerboy 07-13-2014 03:38 PM

On executive courses, they tee off from the black tee boxes, but don't make it up to the green (forward) tee box.
BTW, newbies are most welcome here and no one wants to embarrass them. This thread is all in fun.

EXACTLY. This is in the spirit of fun. Us OLD duffers still do a lot of this stuff.

You can tell a brand new golfer by either they have all NEW equipment, or not very many clubs and wear tennis shoes. And think you need a PAIR of gloves.

2BNTV 07-13-2014 03:58 PM

You can tell a new golfer as they are so excited to be playing, they wore their shorts backwards. :jester:

graciegirl 07-13-2014 04:41 PM

They walk on the invisible line between the ball and the hole on the green.

They talk during other golfer's setup.

Barefoot 07-13-2014 04:50 PM

I have a pink golf bag and I play with pink balls.
And I have a tag on my clubs from the Golf Academy that says "NEW TO GOLF". :girlneener:

MikeV 07-13-2014 05:06 PM

I love to golf with new golfers. I look like a pro.

Bonny 07-13-2014 07:11 PM

I think some are taking this thread way too serious. It was just in fun.
I have been golfing for several years. I have many days you would think I never picked up a club in my life.
So please don't get all upset over this stuff.
Gracie just wanted to have some fun with it.
Most of us are laughing because we've been there done that and maybe still are. LOL

I wear tennis shoes. LOL

eweissenbach 07-13-2014 07:21 PM

I enjoy playing with beginners, men or women. I just tell them to relax and enjoy the game, pick up your ball in the sand and throw it on the green if you want and just keep up the pace. No one will have any heartburn playing with or behind you as long as you keep up the pace. The best way to tell if a person is a beginner is that they really seem to enjoy playing! :a20:

And beginners are astounded they have a choice of 30 FREE golf courses.
And they never complain about the conditions.
And they've been told there may be gators in the ponds, so they stay clear!

Quite a few people wear tennis shoes. Never saw the difference the way I play. And the short spikes do not grab the turf all that well anyway.

I wore tennis shoes for a whole year while my Achilles tendon was healing. (It was an old football injury) ;)

I am not making fun of new golfers, we all started at sometime and this is the biggest golf community in the whole country. Of course there are a lot of newbies.....and a lot of oldies too. I have played for more than forty years and I keep getting worse.

DonH57 07-13-2014 09:34 PM

I started playing golf when I moved here. Never had the time to do it before. I enjoy being outdoors and playing golf with others for fun. I can play relaxed because my play doesn't effect me being able to pay the mortgage each month. Golf is very frustrating but makes me want to do better. It's another sport I wished I started when I was young.

I've only been playing for about 9 years and I definitely don't take this game seriously. If I did I would have quit a long time ago. Some days I'm not too bad, other days I'm really bad. No problem playing with newbies, no problem playing with women. It's all about having fun.

glgene 07-13-2014 10:03 PM

Newbies often have not heard of the "double par" scoring rule. That is, never take more than twice the strokes of the par score for any given hole. Example: If it's a par 3, stop taking swings after 6 total attempts. Just pick up your ball after swing (stroke) 6, and record a 6 on the scorecard.

Why the rule? To not slow up the foursomes behind you. Got to keep the game moving!

Some golfers take it a bit further. For example, on a par 5 hole, they max. out at 8 strokes. But that rule (or suggestion) doesn't always occur. But under no circumstance should amateurs ever take more than double a hole's par score...cause it ultimately delays your time to reach the 19th hole <g>.

Miles42 07-13-2014 11:16 PM

I am not great at the game but one thing I do with great consistency is have fun.

jebartle 07-14-2014 03:49 AM

More Amazing is

The 75 yard driver, dribbles up on the green next to the pin AND on Ladies Day they are the biggest contributor to the winning team and they are the MOST fun to play with because they are even more amazed by their achievement....Love this game!

Nice to see this has taken a more positive turn. It seemed yesterday that the comments were getting pretty snarky. As a former teacher of middle school & high school students, whenever a 'bully' was confronted about poor behavior the 'bully' always replied: "I was just playing wit him. Just having fun."
One thing that bothers my hubby & I on the course, is when putting they pick up & don't putt out when it is two feet from the hole. (Not talking about double par.)

I am truly not being "snarky", I am curious over coffee. Assuming we do not have a match, why do you folks care if I pick up my two foot putt for par or bogey?

As far as the thread, I could not think of anything to add. Every time I thought of something, it occurred to me I know people that have played for years that still do that. I think Ed nailed it:

They can hit one off the side of the club and it goes 2 feet to the right and they laugh. I think to myself, I hope they can keep that as they play better and better. I so wish I could emulate their joy for the game even in that moment...:eclipsee_gold_cup:

"61-definitions-and-34-rules, Oh My"

New Golfer | PGA.com

There some articles about new golfers in this link.

I especially like this one. 61 Definitions and 34 Rules

graciegirl 07-14-2014 07:35 AM

Sometimes a new golfer arrives at a course in a muscle shirt.

Steve & Deanna 07-14-2014 07:49 AM

When we first started playing golf I was really intimidated seeing some of these people pull up with big brand name golf bags attached to their golf carts. I thought these guys must be really good....and then I saw the light. People up north have heard about TV and ask ' do you and your wife play golf' to which my standard answer is "We own golf clubs." We have lots and lots of fun golfing and we like to follow the rules.

Steve & Deanna 07-14-2014 07:50 AM
