the Villages northern state? where do u go to escape heat?
 

I believe there is no other place like our piece of heaven here! However , I am looking for a place to go next summer to escape our hot temps here. Has anyone found a place that we can keep busy, and enjoy cooler weather for a few weeks next summer. We are not golfers so that is no a need. We just want to find things to do, not set in cabin in the wood, it just is not our thing.

Right now I am in Newport Beach, CA. For the next week the lows are forecast to be running about 65 degrees F, the highs about 81. I do not even have air conditioning in my 1962 house which is near the beach. I use a fan a few days a year. Few bugs, too. I can leave the doors open for ventilation. Come on over!

We are now in Marblehead MA on the coast about 15 miles north of Boston. Bus transport every 30 minutes into Boston, Logan Airport. Local visits to Salem, Newburyport, Rockport, Portsmouth NH and longer to the Mountains of NH (3 Hrs), Cape Cod (2 Hrs), Maine (3 Hrs). They have a great YMCA that we join for the month for $100 for the both of us and go there most mornings. We walk to the harbor, beach and restaurants. We used to live here and now spend every July here. Temperature is moderated by the ocean. Ocean temp about 64 degrees. A great place to escape to in the summer. It is a residential community and not a tourist trap.

I housewatch for a couple who go to Hendersonville, NC every summer. Just south of Asheville.

Chesapeake Bay in the great rural Northern Neck of Virginia. One of the most beautiful places in the world!

For anyone desiring a month long, or more, road trip........I was going to suggest a leisurely tour of the Massachusetts coast (to include Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket)........your area for sure........Salem for sure, for its history.......and then up to coastal Maine via coastal New Hampshire. Rye New Hampshire coastline is gorgeous. Continue up to Nubble Lighthouse in York Beach Maine.......Kennebunkport Maine, Ogunquit Maine....Boothbay Harbor, Maine, Camden Maine, Bar Harbor Maine, Eastport Maine............up to Calais where you cross over the border into New Brunswick Canada. Up to Bay of Fundy......on to Nova Scotia, to P.E.I., Cape Breton...

Take all the coastal roads if you want to see anything.

Don't miss the Canadian Maritimes.....see the Bay of Fundy, Anne of Green Gables on Prince Edward Island..........all of this cold New England ocean water/Canadian water.....will be very refreshing.

Also, we have wonderful memories of the friendly Canadians........all of them, that we met in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, etc........Cape Breton. Must see Cape Breton. Take your time to soak in all of this beauty.............and cool refreshing air.

But first see Marblehead for sure.......Rockport, etc. If you like crafts, this is the area artists flock to.

Some people choose to fly into Boston.......rent a car for the northern leg of the trip up to Canada. Have fun.

P.S.Think ahead to make your ferry reservations to Martha's Vineyard & also to Nantucket......car ferries.

I would like to spend a couple months ( July and Aug) in a cottage that is on a lake or a river and north enough that there are no gators. We don't want to travel too far north...maybe NC or Tennessee.

This is a great place to escape the heat. 80 daytime, 60 overnight. No humidity. However, we long to be back in the Villages. Put our home on the market with the relocation program in the Villages. We love the program. But believe it or not we're COLD here. I think we have Florida blood in us now. hee hee

We have spent 8+ months a year in TV since 2007. This is the first summer where we did not have a northern home. It is a strange feeling for sure (for us anyway). We got fortunate in that we were asked to dog/house sit for a family member as they traveled for five weeks. We got stuck doing this on a little island called Martha's Vineyard. We are in this area: Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association | A National Historic Landmark

We told them we would not charge them to do the sitting :a20:

We then got very lucky and found a tiny cottage through September for a reasonable rate. It looks like a studio apartment, NO bedrooms. It will be a great test of a 33 year marriage.

No idea what we do next year as we really got lucky this year. Staying long term on MV without spending a fortune is not a easy task and not in our financial plan.

I like this thread. I may be reaching out to Villager Dude as where he is sounds fun. We also have friends in Prince Edward Island which sounds like a blast.

I am a newbie when it comes to trying to rent long term anywhere, so reading stuff like this is great for me...

I assume you want a destination rather than a road trip?
If you fly into Toronto, Ontario, Canada, you'll find it cooler and tons to do.
If you want less City, there are many fun resorts north of Toronto.
Niagara Falls is a popular tourist destination.

If you want a road trip, a previous poster suggested starting in New England and driving into Canada.
That works if you don't mind a lot of driving. My favorite thing is do is Whale Watching.

I was born and raised in the Canadian Maritimes, so that is heaven to me.
Temperatures there are usually about 20 degrees cooler than Florida.
Prince Edward Island is my favorite.
Also beautiful and picturesque are Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Cabot Trail, and New Brunswick.
If you ever seriously contemplate a vacation, I'd be happy to make some suggestions based on your wish list.

As I read your post it dawned on me my fingers had typed Port St Lucie in my post while my brain was thinking Prince Edward Island :oops:.

All of the places you mention sounds like great adventures for us...

I second all of these places. Love Nova Scotia, Cabot Trail, New Brunswick. We haven't made it to PEI yet.

Another suggestion: anything along the North Channel or Les Cheneaux (aka The Snows).

Have you been to Katama Beach? Martha's Vineyard & vicinity is a great summer respite. Enjoy.

Quite a ride from northern Vermont EAST through New Hampshire, Maine & then NORTH in Maine from Greenville........


You will see Moose crossing the roads. We stop here for a few days before heading up to the Canadian Maritimes..........lake is smooth like a mirror. Crystal clear water.........long long long road in.........which seems endless; the road has tall evergreens on each side. You will feel like you are in the north woods of Maine.

Our country is a big wide wonderful place to explore............many cool locations.

What about doing a house swap for a month with a European couple. I have friends who did this and had a month in the UK and loved it. I also have friends who swapped with a couple from France and had a great time. It is so interesting to see how the other half lives!

We're in Wells Maine but longing for our home in The Villages.

I still have a home in Connecticut that I just put on the market yesterday. Will Officially become a fulltime Villager when it sells. Have a home in Pennecamp now. WE have been in The Villages in July and it has been hot as HE**. WE are back in CT now getting things in order and enjoying the pleasant weather and beautiful New England summers.

We will still come back to CT in the summer and stay with our kids for at least a month or so.

It's been a mild summer in Ohio, Wisconsin. Warm in the day cools off at night

That's the best of both worlds. Stay with your kids, and you don't have to worry about a house sitting empty all winter. You still get out of the heat here in July/Aug.

Life is too short to hide out in the AC. As I get older I find myself doing more and more. I now find things interesting that just a few years ago would have bored me.

I am from northern Illinois, so I wouldn't go back there for the summer because it can be just as hot. But I would go to the Appalachian mountains. Virginia, West Virginia are nice, but I especially like the area around northern Georgia and Asheville, North Carolina!

of course, I have to admit, we don't mind just sweating! We don't stay in just because it's hot. We enjoy Florida even in the summer. We always stay here all summer.

I would LOVE to do something like that!

Very very picturesque "GREEN" Canadian island with gently rolling hills.......steep cliffs looking down to sea, etc.............you will meet the nicest of people on P.E.I. A slower pace of life. No traffic or congestion.

The newish Confederation Bridge makes it easier to get to.....than in the past.

I have a friend here in TV that is now spending a month in the Blue Ridge mountains in NW Georgia. He is absolutely loving it and plans to do it again next year.

The ferry runs between Caribou, Nova Scotia and Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island, a 75 minute trip.

The Confederation Bridge runs from Port Elgin, New Brunswick to Borden, PEI.
It's about eight miles in length and is called the "fixed link" by locals.

Prior to completion of The Bridge in 1997, access to/from PEI was by ferry only.
I grew up in the Maritimes, and we had a summer cottage on PEI at the time.
There was much controversy and heated debate about connecting PEI to the mainland.
Many locals felt it would ruin the character of the Island.
However many commercial enterprises felt it would be a definite asset in moving quickly on/off PEI.

The controversy about larger golf cups for easier putting in The Villages reminds me of the debates about whether a Bridge to PEI was needed!

Thanks for the local knowledge, Bare. I imagine opening PEI up to the mainland was a serious dilemma for the local residents.

Cooperstown, NY. It's a quaint small town though can get bit noisy with baseball fans. But, love the old hotel, Leatherneck golf course and beautiful lake. Of course it is much cooler there plus good restaurants. Don't mind staying around Finger Lakes area also sipping white wine by the many lakes.

Travel out west, the Gran Canyon and Yellowstone are great in the summer

I plan to stay in northern Michigan…no place is more beautiful! I will be staying in TV in MY house (just bought after renting for 8 years) for the fall, winter, and spring…I will spend the summer in my 'park model'. It's just really a small trailer that I close up when I'm not there. But, it is sooooo beautiful up there in summer….You may look into a park model - very inexpensive!
