Dogs Require Licensing in Sumter County

Am I the only person that did not know dogs owned by Sumter county residents must be licensed?? This requirement by Sumter County has a cost of $5.00 per dog. :crap2:

redwitch 08-21-2014 08:57 PM

Thought that was true of all dogs in America -- shots and licensed.

JC and John 08-21-2014 09:17 PM

A sign at our vet's office indicates cats must be licensed too in Sumter Co.

wendyquat 08-21-2014 09:52 PM

I understand it's a hefty penalty if caught without it!

Barefoot 08-21-2014 10:18 PM

I wonder if Snowdogs have to be licensed, if they are already licensed somewhere else.

Probably not. You should (as I am sure you do) carry a copy of their rabies certificate.

Might depend on whether their owners have applied for the homestead exemption or have declared themselves to be Florida residents.

I kept misplacing my dogs certificate, so I had it tattooed on my arm :evil6:
They should incorporate a breast pocket on those service dog vests people can order online...

Yeah, they could ask for your tax return if you had a dog tag that was not from Sumter County :1rotfl:

Two things I have never heard here; Is your dog licensed? and How much money do you have?

That is probably because I don't remember you saying you have a dog. I have been asked and I have asked that question when I used to walk my dog and did not see a license on the other persons dog's collar. Some dog owners do not realize they need a rabies license in Marion county.

I used to get my dog his rabies shot at Markets of Marion. They do not do licenses. I had to go to the vet and show him my rabies certificate to get a tag for Bart. The tag cost $7.

OH.

RErmer 08-22-2014 09:32 AM

We just got an email from our vet reminding us that a license is needed for our cat in Sumter county, even though the cat never goes outside. For Sumter county, you can get the license at the government building at Pinellas. I'm not sure I'm going to do so. What do others do?

dirtbanker 08-22-2014 10:07 AM

I would save the $7 and get rid of the cat! :girlneener:

TNLAKEPANDA 08-22-2014 11:24 AM

How about those Snowbird Dogs?

Clarification. A Rabies Tag is not a County License. All counties require a County License, Sumter, Marion and Lake however how well they check if your cat or dog has one is another matter. Even if you have a cat that stays indoors it has been a known fact that Sumter for awhile was being especially strict on this if they happened by and saw you cat in an lanai or in a window they can knock on your door and ask to see the County License. Chances of it happening ar slim but it has happened and they do this randomly. Whether they fine you or give you a warning is probably up to them but the fines can be high. Many Vet offices will sell the County Licenses. I know mine did as a courtesy to their clients but they add a fee. Best to go to the county to get them and some counties have 3 year ones which saves you $$. A Rabies certificate and or tag is the law!

Yes, we carry copies of their Rabies Certificates; they are required when crossing an International Border.
However I don't think Rabies Certificates have anything to do with Dog Licenses -- perhaps in Florida they they are the same thing?
Our dogs were vaccinated for rabies in Florida, and we bought dog licenses in Canada.

Is it cops that look for unlicensed dogs? If so, they might be better off spending their time looking for drunk golf cart drivers. :evil6:

I have neighbors in Sumter County who sometimes get dog-tired from doing their yard work. Do they need a license?

Thanks for the info. It's probably best for us to buy dog licenses in both Canada and Florida.
How much is a dog license in Sumter County?

JCMSr 08-22-2014 03:13 PM

Just looked up the licensing requirements for Sumter County and it is true. All dogs, cats and ferrets (no, this is not a joke) must be licensed. Sterile animals cost $5 per year and Non-Sterile are $15 per year. You can purchase either a one or three year license but must show proof of an active rabies vaccination for the same period. Just one more thing I learned from TOTV. Some day I would like to learn something that does not cost me money!

Sumter County requires that you bring in a rabies vaccination certificate in order to pay for the pet license. If your pet has been spayed/neutered it is $5 for a year. In order words, it costs about the same a your coffee.

Christine G 08-22-2014 05:38 PM

All dogs have to have a current license and rabies tag, here in Florida and everywhere else. The vet will surely mention it, ours did, and we had a current license from our previous county and registered our dog again. Another thing that seems to go unchecked is that all dogs in most counties, including Marion, Lake and Sumter are subject to a leash law, in other words, unless they are in a "proper" dog park, they must be kept on a leash. The open spaces in the villages are not dog parks and one day all these folk who allow their dogs to run free will get a ticket no doubt. Further thing is that you can be charged with neglect etc in Florida if you leave your dog in your car. Bad enough with leaving babies in cars, dogs suffer the same and die. Surely everyone an afford the princely sum of $5 to keep your dog legal!

We will definitely license our pets in Florida, as Bizdoc said, it's the price of a coffee!
And hopefully the money goes to Shelters.

Licensing pets

What if someone has more than two pets per household? Could licensing them create a problem?

Warren, you are becoming quite the celebrity. I saw your picture in the Daily Sun twice this year. Will they take your picture again if you go for a dog license? :-)

Doro22 08-23-2014 04:29 PM

I didn't even know they could drive. Do they get a restricted license, or what?

wendyquat 08-23-2014 08:02 PM

This is where I saw the penalty.

A friend of ours was bitten by a dog yesterday while walking on the sidewalk here in The Villages. Dog was on a leash but obviously not being controlled.

A Sumter County Sheriff Deputy came to the seen and stated that the dog owner would be fined $300.00 for not having a Sumter County pet license.

I wonder how many pet owners in Sumter County have a pet license for their pets. My guess is that very few do. Am I wrong?

I would guess that you are correct. Hence the reason for my orginal post.:coolsmiley:

If I ever got stopped by the Police and asked if Chip has a license - I'd say "He's only 8 and I never let him drive the Cart". Hopefully the judge would have a sense of humor.

But to go on record, Chip has a Lake Co License - and will get a Sumter Co one at his next annual checkup. Hope we don't get stopped before then...

Two things I have heard is people on here take a simple question and act like a smarty pants and prices are too high on items for sale. Thanks Gracie, for always making things " light".

Awwwwwwww! So cute. And a lot more convenient size!

I did not realize that a dog had to be licensed in each place if you're a snowbird. Our three-year MI license will expire next year, but of course now that we're permanent, our dog is double-licensed. He rarely wears that or the rabies tag due to the fact that they become detatched. But I carry them with me to the dog park.

I used the ring from a key ring (the kind which is actually 3 circles flattened. Don't lose tags unless I screw up and clip leash onto the keyring instead of the solid metal ring.
