Tapas in Brownwood
Went to Tapas tonight for dinner, 1st time ! Was not very busy, service was great and server explained the menu and how to order. So far impressed, we ordered 4 tapas for two people. Cost was $46.00 for the four tapas. Portion size was very small and really needed to order about 2 more. Tapas has a good start, but need to adjust portion size or lower price..We'll give them another try..in a few months. Hope they don't fail.

Tapas is a dining experience about quality and presentation not quantity 4 Tapas only $46 is a bargain
|
I agree

Tapas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia When I heard they were going to open a tapas place in the Villages - the first thing I said was " Small portions and sharing" that should go over well! |
We loved it. Portion size could be just a little bigger.
|
Never go for tapas when you are hungry. It really is about flavor and presentation. I wonder how it will fare in TV?

Went there last week. Some portions were small and a few were larger than expected. They were all good. But the small portions were too obvious.
|
I think it's a great place ! I have tried many items on the menu. Everything I had has been good. It's perfect for me because I'm not a big meal eater. They have a great staff. Everyone is so friendly ! The building is beautiful inside. It's a great place to get together with friends ! I hope they do well.

i agree with baileysdad that the food was good but the portion size is only appetizer and will probably not go over with hearty eaters...it was a pleasant experience but i don't think i would go there regularly on my budget :)
|
We agree. Pleasant place to go on our way to the movies or bring guests by for a drink to see Brownwood, but due to the pricing we would not go that often.
The food was good but one of our selections, the mussels w/snails, contained 6 mussels & one was not open. I forget how much it was exactly, about $10? Next time I'd stick with the chicken appetizer we had which was excellent, and cost a few dollars less. |
We went there a few days ago, as vegans it's always a question if there's something we want to eat.
Asked the waitress, she had Antonio the chef come out ask us what we wanted and how we like it prepared, WOW!! it was great. $15 for two the other couple with us also liked they had. |
OK. Let me expand that. Never go to dinner when you are voraciously hungry. Eat a snack first. Also good advice when ordering sushi--I can't afford it when I'm starving.

I just thought of my daughter for a moment and the advice I used to give her (actually quite bad advice, I know). I would tell her to eat before a first date so her date wouldn't think he couldn't afford to date her. She has a habit of ordering large, very expensive meals. Tapas would be perfect for a first date. Dainty eaters unite.

We like to split a order did not work out here. Menu is hard to read but the bartender told us two for one drinks all day.

2 4 1 but not a low price like City Fire

Good Explanation of Tapas
|
since i lived in madrid for four years, i was really looking forward to the tortilla espanola. in spain it is a large sort of potato, eggs and onion pie which is sliced for individual tapas...served cold with bread usually...but the authentic spanish chef at our restaurant, probably for reasons of freshness, served a small round hot egg cake which falls apart at the fork, very unlike the hearty thick spanish ones i have enjoyed...it was a bit disappointing. the empanadas, however, were fabulous!! (meat ones)
my usual habit is to get a nice meal for about $12 and take half of it home....this is not that kind of place :) |
in spain, one selects small pieces of food, one per saucer, and pays by the number of plates on the table. portions are very small. it's usually self serve, and very inexpensive.
$10 per tapas ain't gonna sell in this town. |
When the rent is $35 a sq ft, I guess they have to charge that.
A flat bread in city fire is like $9, same at World of Beer. I was told that the chef there Antonio was working in the white house around the Regan era. The man can cook as I already stated IMO |
Villagers want Tapas Quality food and only pay Buffet prices
|
What struck me first entering Las Tapas was that it did not look like a typical Spanish restaurant. The decor was very nice and the color scheme was correct, but I was a little apprehensive. That disappeared quickly as the food and service overcame any concern. The fun thing about tapas is the flow of the dining experience and it was spot on. One of the selections was a bit small but very authentic and good. The other four selections were actually generous. And a nice bottle of a Rioja region wine added to the enjoyment of the evening. Definitely a plus to The Villages restaurant scene.

We went for dinner last night and had a wonderful experience except.....seated behind us were two of the nastiest old birds I've been around. They berated the server and manager about portion sizes and service times. It was a simply sad. On the good note, cold beer and good food.
|
We were there with friends last night too. The place was packed. Fortunately everyone around us seemed to be enjoying their meal as did we.

And people wonder why restaurants are reluctant to locate here. Its rather surprising that employers can find any waitstaff willing to take this abuse. |

I am not aware of restaurants being "reluctant" to locate here. If you refer to comments on here about specific chains or restaurants that folks would like to see, that is pretty normal. In every city I have lived in, I have heard such comments. There are, just within the three town squares, about or close to 40 eating establishments and who knows how many just outside the gates. Most of the closings here are a result of corporations or mismanagement, and there will always be closings for some reason or another. Always somebody waiting in the wings. These places help a lot of folks earn a living in the area, and actually travel here from Ocala and beyond. I think if you talk to servers, there are bad attitude customers everywhere. No, I must disagree 100% but I suppose it is up to perception. This is a vibrant community with lots of willing consumers, and any restaurant who can afford it, or has expansion plans would love to be here. Actually, I think it has been quite impressive the retail growth here while many other communities suffered. |

We went Sunday night and the food was excellent but the service a little shaky. We sat there for 10 minutes and finally had to ask for someone to come take our drink order. After we finally got a waiter it went smooth. We would certainly go again.
|
Tapas are supposed to be small! the price seems about right $6 to $12 each. did the $46 you paid include tax?

Glad you enjoyed the outcome, though. |

Actually the biggest meal in Spain, la comida, is eaten midday. And a siesta follows. Businesses are closed for at least two hours for those two events. |
what did you order?

I really liked Las Tapas - been there a few times. Service was a bit slow but what I did like is that when the waiter recommended a dish (I was torn between 2 different ones), he told me that if I didn't like it that he would gladly take it back in exchange for something else. I also really enjoyed the entertainment - My friend Lisa Beck (who's been playing all around the Villages) and Jim Locke are playing now as "Rock Solid" and we had a blast dancing to their music after we ate. They are playing again on 9/19 - com check out the food at Las Tapas and their music.
|
What time does the music start?
|
At 7:30 but last time they played, they were asked to start at 7 because the place was busy. They play until 10:30 so there is plenty of time to hear the music, and we really had a great time.

By the posts it seems it will be hard for residents to get their heads around the concept of Tapas. I suspect it was a risk for them to open in TV because of that....and am concerned for their future. My wife and I will do our part to help them succeed as Tapas is one of our favorite places when we travel to cities that embrace the concept.

Maybe they were just buried under kids and day to day survival. Now they are spreading their wings! However, the availability of Bing and Google should make their new adventure less tenuous. There is virtually no form of knowledge that is untappable on the internet. Many come with videos. Truly eye-opening. |
We went for our second visit last Saturday and enjoyed it just as much as the first time. We will be back!!
|
We were there tonight. Had an awesome time. Met some people and we had so much fun ! It was great. The inside was packed. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. Lots of people out on the patio talking about how much they enjoyed everything. So nice to see them doing so good. I love it because it's something different and the food is very good !!!
