Will next week be cooler?

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love living in The Villages except for one thing. This summer has made me completely miserable. This is our second summer here and I don't remember it being so hot and humid last summer. I feel like it's been Groundhog Day since mid-June. The highs, lows and humidity haven't varied much for three months. For the first time, I regret selling our home in Ohio. It doesn't bother my husband at all and he still plays pickleball, golf and softball in spite of the heat while I hibernate in the a/c. He's always willing to go to happy hour but I refuse when the temperature is in the mid-90s every day. If it's like this next summer, I plan to "couch surf" with my northern family and friends. Maybe some day I'll be able to eat breakfast on the lanai without being in a steam bath. Am I the only one who feels this way?

No, I don't think you're alone. This is our third summer here and it's definitely worse this year, when I had absolutely NO occasion to call my mom back in NYC and say it was cooler down here than up there. Haven't been in the pool, either, since it feels like bathwater to me. This, too, shall pass, and come January, February and March, this hot summer will all be forgotten.

Why do you think there are so many seasonal people?

Bavarian 09-09-2014 01:00 PM

First Summer here (just moved here last October) and we found the weather great. Spent time in pool when we could between Thunderstorms. I think Summer here is better than in MD, no mosquitos. It is going to be soon too cold for the pool without running heater. Keep putting off Solar Heat.

And I am not one to like the heat, but as long as I can go in the pool, it is great.

Now if we could only sell our house in Southern Maryland, we would be super happy.

sunny46 09-09-2014 01:07 PM

This is my 10 th summer here and it always i s miserable. Don't get me wrong, I am a southern gal, but this heat is so intense. The only problem is, once it gets cooler and you want to go somewhere, there are too many people here!

Been here 8 summers and find this one was most unusual....warm, wet and more humid more days than not. I, too, have been indoors more than outside.
At this point, I 'm longing for a cool breeze... ;)

Fret not, there should be some weather improvement pretty soon. Seems like the nasty, hot, humid weather is around forever, but it's really only 3 to 4 months, and there is lots to do in air conditioning available for us.....though just hanging out at home, getting caught up on things isn't a bad thing either.

Welcome to FL.
As has been said a million times it is what it is and most importantly what one makes of it.
FL beats the alternatives including the summers.
On average the past few years there have been more days over 90 during the summer in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains than in TV.
Over the last 10 ++ years we have acclimated. October to April are the most glorious months to be here.
The rest of the time it is warmer....but one learns to do what needs done outside before noon. And the weather after dinner is just fine for anything one wants to do.

Too many get AC-itis. Get outdoors....get in the shade....have a ceiling (or other types) fan....grab a beer.....and relax.

Been here for 17 plus years since retirement and for 3 back in the late 70's. A few observations. Yes it is hot and humid during the summer and the amount of rain seems cyclical. Some years more than others. There are a few things that are constant in Florida. The days will start getting shorter in September and evenings will be more pleasant. The love bugs will arrive in May and September. The snow birds will start their southern migration soon and head north around Easter. And finally only a few days with frost and no snow shoveling or salt and sand covering the roads. There are even days in fall & winter when you can enjoy the sun and swim. So all things considered, it is great to be here.

Hot but still wonderful

I can agree that this summer has been a scorcher! I haven't tolerated it like I did the past 2 years. But, I have a hobby that I can do indoors and things to catch up on so all is well. I still believe there's nothing like having your coffee out on the lanai and feeling the rich sunshine on your skin. I'll take this over the snow any day.

I think it's been the worse one in the 4 years we've been here and my neighbor says it's her 12th summer here and is by far the worse one she remembers. They hopped onto a cheap cruise for some relief. The heat and humidity is the major topic of conversation in the clubs I belong to.

janmcn 09-09-2014 04:15 PM

No, next week will not be cooler. The first cool front of the season historically arrives in The Villages in mid-October, sometimes a little earlier or a little later. It is as predictable as the love bugs arriving in September and again in May.

pbkmaine 09-09-2014 04:56 PM

We get up at 7am and ride our bikes 3 miles to breakfast. The weather is nice at that hour. Into the pool at the hottest part of the day. Lie in the hammock at sunset and watch the colors of the sky. Love the summer here!

You're right on....People shouldn't expect to move 1000 miles south and think the summers will be just like "back home".
I've heard people say that this is a hot summer. This is my 61st summer in Fla and I've never seen a cool one. Some are a few degrees cooler or hotter but who can tell the difference? I do know though as I get older I can take the heat and cold less than when younger.

it's even better at 3 a.m.

And as predictable as seasonal residents returning to The Villages in flocks. See y'all soon. :MOJE_whot:

We moved here 10 years ago now already opening windows at around 7:00pm.

Happydaz 09-09-2014 06:42 PM

This is our second summer here and I love it! I bike early in the morning, then come back and read the paper. Then I go out and do some gardening until 10:30 AM or so then have lunch and go to the pool for the rest of the day. Then maybe mow the lawn and get ready for dinner out or cook something up. The theme here is that you adjust your schedule to the weather and heat. The other thing I notice is that when I go to the pool everyday I usually see the same twenty people. There are not that many people who use our pool. That's OK with us as we enjoy our "private neighborhood" pool. I think by going outside and enjoying a Florida summer you will find there are many things to do. Sure I will enjoy the cooler weather when it comes, but the pool water starts to get cold in November. Is Florida hotter in the summer than New Hampshire? Yes it is.

DigitalGranny 09-09-2014 07:17 PM

Oh no! I thought the water was kept heated year round in the pools! I'm counting on swimming every day. Really, can you use the pools in January?

mtdjed 09-09-2014 07:31 PM

If you can't take the heat, get out of the fire. Find a nice cool vacation spot for a month to break it up and come back refreshed and happy to be here. That way, people will not talk about how rude and grumpy you are as they do in another thread.

asianthree 09-09-2014 10:52 PM

It has been a weird summer up north too. More rain than ever. But cool nights for great sleeping. Too cool for the pool.

jblum315 09-10-2014 05:48 AM

Florida is sub-tropical. Humans are designed to live comfortably in a moderate climate, not tropical nor arctic. And where would that be? not Florida.

kathy and al 09-10-2014 06:43 AM

My answer to the OP's original question: I've been in Central/South Florida for 43 years and for that many years I can tell you that the 2nd week in October is always the "transition" time when the humidity goes away and cooler days and nights prevail. Let's see if I can make it 44????

The average historical temps from weather.com seem to be pretty comparable to this year.

Last year a couple people mentioned to me that 2013 was the hottest summer they'd ever seen. I just nodded vacantly, since I'm good at that.

I'm not trying to minimize or discount anyone's experiences, just that I'm with the group who haven't noticed any big differences. My A/C bill is averaging the same as it always has.

But cooler is coming! We've also been opening our windows a little earlier in the evenings now.

coffeebean 09-15-2014 03:22 PM

We are seasonal and own a home in TV. This past mid August, Hubby and I went on a cruise then spent 8 days in TV. One reason was to see what it was like in the middle of the summer and another reason was to get a few things done in the house. We were pleasantly surprised at how tolerable the heat and humidity was at this time of year. We did not do anything outside in the middle of the day but that is how we surviced for 24 years living in South Florida. Actually, central Florida seemed a bit better to us, weather wise. We loved it in TV in the mornings and evenings. Nothing wrong with spending the hottest part of the day indoors in the A/C.

The pools are heated to 83 degrees in the winter. If it is really cold outside, you can see the "steam" coming off the water. I love to swim in the winter when the water feels so soothing and warm. It isn't fun getting out of the water though!

nitehawk 09-15-2014 07:57 PM

I just love TV in the summer -- no crowds -it just takes a little getting used to - have to drink more kool-aid
