Mine is Touch of Evil http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Touch_of_Evil which I also think I saw at the University of Nevada, Reno as one of the movies in Howard Rosenberg's film criticism classes. Thanks Tal, Although his death wasn't unexpected, its sad to hear of another of our movie legends passing. I'll always remember him for his larger than life image.

As a young girl, I worshiped these actors who had a presence about them of being so protective, with deep resonating voices, and being professional not only on the screen but in their personal lives as well. Of course, his movies are the all time greats, like Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, El Cid, The Agony and the Ecstasy were all so memorable but I think my personal favorite, believe it or not, was The Greatest Show on Earth. Probably because of my fantasy of always wanting to join a circus and be a trapeze artist (ME?), I think I saw that movie about a dozen times and still watch it when its on TV.

His biography, however, brought to mind another wonderful, young girl memory, that I have not thought about for years. The early '50's TV show, Studio One. To those not old enough to remember it, many legends first made appearances on this wonderful dramatic show, including my cousin, Anne Bancroft, along with Jack Palance and many others, and the dramas were so well written and acted, that it was a show we waited for all week to see. Gosh, those days are gone, now we have American Idol?

He seemed to be one of the first extremely politically active celebrities who also had a very extensive and very successful acting career. There are many of these now like Tom Cruise, George Clooney, Jane Fonda, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Danny Glover, etc.

He kind of made the mold for the activist celebrity even if I did not agree with many of his positions.

Charlton Heston is not someone you met KathieI when you were out and about with your cousin Anne Bancroft and her husband Mel Brooks???

Interesting question, Tal. I was trying to think about it. There were so many stars we met at restaurants, etc. when I was with them, but he wasn't one that we "hung out" with, so if I did, it was just a casual passing in a restaurant or theater.

Good point about his political activities, but I am enormously impressed with his long time marriage and the lack of smut activities as the younger generation is prone to. I guess I'm just so old fashioned.

I was definitely on the opposite side of his politics. However, I admired his talent. I remember when I heard he was in the beginning stages of Alzheimers and his courage in coming forward that he had it. I'd never written a fan letter in my entire life, but I did send him one thanking him for his courage in telling people he had it. Surprisingly, I got a very nice note from him.

He was a star in the true sense of stars.

I'm with Kathie, The Greatest Show on Earth was an awesome movie. Another favorite movie of mine was Soylent Green.

So, hail to a grand actor and a true star. May his talent always be there for all to see.

Audrey Hepburn is another celebrity like Charlton Heston who really used her fame and fortune for humanitarian work. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audrey_Hepburn

Not sure I would call the NRA humanitarian in any sense of the word, but.... Do see a 2nd Amendment right to bear arms but arms within reason of home self-defense, hunting, and target practice. Many of the weapons championed by some of the NRA gun nuts seem illogical for ordinary people to have.

Heston did make some movies that should be remembered 100 and more years from now.

Without a doubt, my favorite movie of his is The Ten Commandments. I watch it every year. :#1: A great actor.

Kathie, I have always thought that Studio One was the finest thing that television ever offered, then or now. And to think that it was live!! Every show was like seeing a Broadway play The only dramatic thing done live now is, I think, soap opera, and those are fast disappearing. I was just a little girl but I so looked forward to Studio One. Great memories.

One of my favorite Charleton Heston quotes was, "In the beginning an actor impresses us with his looks, later his voice enchants us. Over the years, his performances enthrall us. But in the end, it is simply what he is." IMO his best movie was The Ten Commandments

The two times people normally say nice things about someone is when they retire and then when they die. Charleton Heston in my view while not a great actor did some very nice work and memorable movies. God Bless is soul

I heard him speak, and met him at Radio City Music Hall in 1995. He narrated a portion of a meeting/show we had in conjunction with New York Life's 150th anniversary. He definitely had a great voice and a "presence". RIP

I didn't agree with his views but he made a several good/great movies.
