Bird Cages and Property Lines
We just got back from TV and we bought a home in Hemingway (just dirt now). It is on a small lot and doesn't have much space in the back yard. How close to the property line can we build a bird cage?

I believe you are limited to 10 feet from the property line for any building structures. |

You should check with the Architectural Review board. I believe (could be remembering wrong) that you have to keep it within the setback lines (which are different than the property lines). We have a designer on a small lot and our setback line is only 5 feet from the house, so we obviously have limitations. Our neighbor had wanted to put a birdcage on, but decided it wasn't worth it, because they have the 5' setback line as well. Good luck!

Lil Dancer, which village are you in? I have also been wondering about putting in plants on the side of the house and do not know the limitations.

This is the link to the Architectural review board. There is a telephone number you can call to ask questions, or you can also download a form to submit for archtectural review.l Hyacynth, we're in mallory. We had to submit a plan showing our proposed landscaping. It was pretty easy to do. I believe they meet once a week, so if you get your plan in, you get it approved in a week or so. Good luck. |

Spoke to one landscaper who we have hired to do pruning, weeding and other things while we are gone. Weren't planning on hiring anyone just yet but her fees were so low, no contract needed to be signed, month by month deal, and she came highly recommended. I have to get our site plan in order to present our proposal. Thanks for the info. What are you planning to do? HB |

Believe it is 5 ft. from the sides and 10 ft. from the back property line. This is your set back. Hope this helps. :)

Hi Chuckster I did not know that. Our next door neighbors have there landscaping ending on their property line. I wonder if landscaping follows the same rules as bird cages do. Do you know?

Yes, I believe the landscaping can go to the property line, but permanent structures must be within the setback lines. We planted our trees a few feet in from the property line, so they would not overhang the property line when they mature.

This October I would like to plant two more citrus trees and perhaps a peach tree. If you do not have a citrus tree I would recommend planting one, when the tree blooms the fragrance is wonderful. Once again appreciate your help. HB |

How do they attach the bird cages to the house? I still haven't totally given up on my 5' bird cage. Does anyone have, or know of, a 5' x (approximate) 15' bird cage?

In Marion County, bird cages and pool enclosures, driveways, etc. are permitted to go over the set back lines. Only the main structure cannot. Also keep in mind, there is a difference between setback lines and easements such as utility easements. Nothing can encroach on easements. Typically, setbacks are defined by the county but developments can also adjust these numbers that may satisfy their needs better.

The answer to the question on how are they (Bird Cages) attached to the house.... "DUCT TAPE", I,m almost positive! I know a guy, who knows a guy, who knows a guy and that guys says the developer owns the duct tape operation in Florida or the developer gets 7 cents kick back on each bird cage. Something like that. |

:2cool: Duct tape! Should have known! I use it for everything. I fixed a hole in a fiberglass bathtub with it and it lasted for several years until we had to sell the place and then we had to fix it right.
No, we haven't contacted Sumter yet. It will be a while before we move there and get around to doing something, but sounds like a good idea. Thanks. Now that I know how to attach it, we can go to Home Depot and buy screen and poles and do this ourselves. ;D |

Set backs and easements vary lot to lot. Call the Architechural Board and be prepared with your Village and lot number. They can answer the question over the phone. Our set back is 7 1/2. Good luck

I'd guess submit it to the Architectural Review Board.
The sales rep told us 10 feet setback, even on birdcages, thus on a villa a side birdcage would be basically impossible. Please keep us informed on how you do on this topic. |
