Information on Water Filtration Systems
 

Hi-we are new to the Villages, just bought a home in Lake Deaton. Can anyone direct us to information on whole house water filtration systems? Thanks!

First, the water in the villages meets all state requirements (irrespective of what the water sales people say). Second you need to determine if you want soft water (the water here is a little on the hard side), and if the additional chorine annoys you (additional chlorine is added due to the lack of a significant cold season). There are much lower cost alternatives than the $3000 to $5000 systems that are being offered. I have a Sears water softener and a Sears whole house filter. Result, the water is so nice that I do not need Jet dry in the dishwasher and the crystal comes out looking like new. Sears has just brought out a hybrid system that has both function in one unit.
My total cost was $800 for the 2 units and $600 for the installation. I was new to TV at the time and did not realize I could do the install myself.

This is just my opinion and I hope it helps. In any case do your research BEFORE you do anything with the water system.

Sure, if you look at the nova filters after year and see what dirt & scum they keep out of your system then tell me if U still think the state standards are what you want to go by.....NOT

Remember most water softeners just soften no clean the water result is U get dirty soft water :shrug:

they aren't needed just get the Nova system for $495, if you want a softener you can add it later, the whole house filter is still needed.

I was not happy with the smell and taste of the water, since we came from a deep well water source. We got the NOVA whole house filter and I am very happy with the results. Now if I could just get COLD water out of the tap......

I come from a town that had very soft water! Had to wash my hair daily! Hated it. Moved here, and my hair never looked or felt better and do not need to wash it every day! Try the water before you invest.

It's not about water softness, it's about what's in the water - chemicals, sediments & contaminant wise.

Those are removed with a Whole House Filter

If it is a whole house filter and your fridge has a water tap you should be able to get cold water.

you will get cold water from the fridge, Rosy was referring to the tap it's temp is determined by the ground temp,

U also don't need to change the filters in the fridge

But if you only get a trickle from the fridge remove the filter. You don't need it with a whole house filter.

We had the Nova filtration system installed a few months ago. I'm not a water drinker so drinking water didn't matter much to me. We installed it so we didn't have to buy bottled water every time we made, coffee, tea or used it for cooking. I just don't think I want the water from the tap in my food. Just what I feel, no scientific info to back it up. The Nova system is compact, and installation was a breeze with Bob. He is very knowlagable and easy to work with. Now I feel comfortable serving my guests and making food with our tap water.

We have two "big blue" filter housings that take 20"x4.5" cartridge filters. The first filter is a cleanable pleated sediment filter and the second filter is a "carbon block" filter to remove chlorine. From there, the filtered water goes to a water softener to remove calcium and magnesium ions (hardness). If you want a water softener, having a chlorine filter is a good idea as it should extend the life of the resin tank (where the calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged). We have soft water that tastes good. PM me if you would like to see the setup.

Nova Filtration all the way!!! No more sediment from the faucets or in the toilet tanks!!! We are not fans of soft water so that is not an option for us.

We had a whole house filter installed by Kiley Plumbing for around $550 so that the water that we drink, cook with and bathe in is chlorine free.

In all fairness you're not comparing apples to apples, I've personally seen and replaced one.

Is Bob still in Nova filtration business?

We don't think a water system is needed in The Villages. We like the way the water tastes that is filtered through the refrigerator.

Gracie - I have little proof for what I'm about to say, but I support the use of filtration systems. It is known that central FL has a higher than average incidence of kidney stones. It is my hypothesis that minerals, including calcium in the ground water, are a significant contributor to this condition.

CALCIUM

Calcium exists in soil and rock such as limestone, dolomite and gypsum. Drinking water contributes only a small amount of the required daily intake. Concentrations as great as 1800 mg/l of calcium in water are reported harmless, although others suggest calcium as a contributor to kidney stones. It can be a nuisance as it contributes to the hardness of the water and build up on pipes or water heaters may inhibit their performance. Low levels can be helpful as it tends to form a coating on pipes which may prevent corrosion.

Recommended Treatment: Cation exchange using a Water Softener

Anyone know of an independent lab that tests water? We had a well in PA and had it independently tested every two years for content, would like to find one around here to understand what's in the water from an independent source.

I am a fan of TV and the developer. Having said that, I'm having a little difficulty understanding why our water quality reports are not filed with the EPA. Does anyone know? Please see below:

Don't agree, in fact studies indicate the opposite is true using a water softener increases the risk.

Myth 1. I got a kidney stone because of my calcium intake.

Despite the fact that calcium is a major component of 75% of stones, excessive calcium intake is very rarely the cause of stone formation. In fact, several studies have shown that restricting calcium intake in most stone formers actually increases the number of stones they develop.

Myth 2. The bad (hard) tap water in my town is causing my stones.

It seems intuitive that drinking “hard” tap water, which contains more dissolved minerals (such as calcium and magnesium), might increase stone risk. However, most studies on the subject show that the type of tap water (hard versus soft) either doesn’t seem to make a difference or that soft water, and not hard water, is actually associated with increased stone risk (Schwartz et al, Urology, 2002).

Based on available research, the quality and source of your tap water likely makes little or no impact on stone risk. Putting in a water softener system may actually increase your risk!

Nova Filters can install a softener, but to date after over 200 whole house filters installed at TV, no one thought they needed one after they realized the difference in their water quality after installing the Nova triple cartridge whole house system. :shrug:

If you are happy with the Village water out of the tap why would you get a filter or softener system! On the other hand we really like our Nova filter system and it makes a big difference!!!

And I like my GE system.
