EWWWWWWWWWWWWW They're back!!!

Did y'all know I truly hate/loathe/despise lovebugs? They're just icky! A royal pain in a convertible. Can't smoke outside without kiling a slew of 'em. Well, I had my first sighting of a few yesterday in Tall Trees. A couple more today in Calumet Grove.

They're backkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!!!!!!!!!!!

Yet another great reason to stop smoking. Some people consider them very inspirational. ;D

I've still never seen a Love Bug, the name is so cute! Looks like I left just in time to avoid them. Do they come back in the Fall?

Why aren't they called Hate Bugs? Or Icky Bugs?

Because they fly united.
They'll be back in late Sept. or early Oct. :edit:

Yuck...better start washing the car every time you take it out if you want to keep your finish.

Re: EWWWWWWWWWWWWW They're back!!!

I asked our sales rep why people make such a big deal about "Bird Cages" when to my understanding mosquitos were not that much of an issue and she said, "LOVE BUGS"!!!!! "Luv bugs?!?!" said I, how bad can a "'Love Bug" be?!?
"OMG", gasped she, "They swarm, they get intimate and their body fluids stain everything!!!"
EWWWWWW is right!

I really cant figure this lovebug thing out! :dontknow: I have not seen one lovebug as of yet. or should I say two seeing as they fly United. (that was very good Eddie).
Im feeling like Im on another planet with all the talk of these unwanted creatures.

I guess I should consider myself lucky as they seem to be very unpopular.

Anyway we will be taking a ride over to Duval tonite, mabe someone can point out these dispicable creatures so I will know what everyones talking about.

Re: EWWWWWWWWWWWWW They're back!!!

Our first and so far, only introduction to love bugs was several years ago when my wife and I were driving back to Orlando Airport. We had dropped our son off at college (ERAU in Daytona) and were driving to the airport at night. About halfway down there it started to rain which I thought was strange since the sky, even though dark, seemed clear. After awhile it really started hitting the windshield (rented car by the way) and I put the wipers on. All I got was a huge smear across the windshield so I pushed the washer button. Hmmm....didn't do much good. After a mile or two we came out of it and there was no rain after that. It was only when we returned the car that we saw the entire front end was plastered with dead bugs. YIKES! That wasn't rain...it was BUGS! The guy who took the car back seemed unfazed. We just shrugged our shoulders and boarded the airport shuttle. What do we know...we're from Long Island. We still want to move to TV but the bugs still have us...well...a little bugged.

Re: EWWWWWWWWWWWWW They're back!!!

I've seen light colored cars that had a completely black front from the plastered love bugs. They're a bear to clean off. Washing them off with Coke Classic seems to help.

Thanks Tal, finally a picture so I can see what they're like. Ewwwww. Do houses have to be pressure washed or is it just cars that get the mess? How long is Love Bug season?

At least Love Bugs don't bite. Don't get me started on Canadian black flies!

Re: EWWWWWWWWWWWWW They're back!!!

Thanks Tal. I just saw one or two and said "what's the big deal". The ones I can't stand are the Palmetto Bugs, I think. :dontknow: Those huge things. But when I saw the picture of that car, that really creeped me out. Mostly on highways? Or do they get that bad right here in TV? ???

jjdees 04-28-2008 02:24 AM

Re: EWWWWWWWWWWWWW They're back!!!

Keep your eyes open on I75 during the season and you'll see cars that passed thru swarms of the critters and they're plastered so thick on the front of the cars, it changes the color to black. Unbelievably gross!

They do not seem to create that much of a mess on the houses. They do make a mess on the driveway and others places on the concrete when they die because there are often so many of them to clean up.

Not sure that 35 mph is fast enough to get many love bugs splattered all over your car or truck but 50 mph and over seems to do it.

Re: EWWWWWWWWWWWWW They're back!!!

they also say not to wear white clothing because they are attracted to light colors. Also put a dryer sheet in your pocket to keep them away, or is that for musqutios? Anyway try it. The year before was a mild season for them. Last year was a moderate, so guess what season we will probably get this year. Yuckkkkkkk

redwitch 04-28-2008 02:59 PM

Re: EWWWWWWWWWWWWW They're back!!!

Last year was MODERATE???? OMG!!!!! If September was moderate, I'm never leaving the house next month.

GREAT!!

We're coming down in Love Bug Season?

Talk about poor plannig. And here I was looking forward to driving around TV in my convertable with the top down. Guess thats not gonna' happen.

redwitch 04-28-2008 09:52 PM

Re: EWWWWWWWWWWWWW They're back!!!

You won't have any problem riding with top down in the evening and the weather is perfect for it! I drove with the top down in September and it was tolerable. I'm one of those who always has a window open anyway, even with the air going (well, I was one pre-rising gas prices), so the top off and lovebugs wasn't that much of an issue -- they'd splat the windshield but I didn't hit any swarms (stayed off the interstates) and that would make a huge difference. They were a problem when I stopped the car and got out. Then it was yucky but it would have been yucky with or without the top on.

So does anyone put those bra's on their cars? Would they help? (not my question - hubby's. He says that's really something to put on a car......)(so I told him I have a few I could give him..)

I have seen these are cars around Palm Harbor, Florida especially during the love bug seasons. Have not noticed them all that much here in TV.

I am back in Canada now and the lovebugs are the only reason I can think of to be glad I am not in TV right now.

Have they left yet?????

Re: EWWWWWWWWWWWWW They're back!!!

It's downright scary -- they've been pretty mild so far. Let's hope they continue this way. I can tolerate this level (seeing about 12 a day). ;D

samhass 05-12-2008 03:25 AM

Re: EWWWWWWWWWWWWW They're back!!!

That is mild. I wonder if they are fading out of existence? That would be nice.

I still have smushed love bugs on my windshield and Im hesitating to get my car washed because they are a constant reminder of my being in TV. I dont want my visit to become a faded memory! I know, thats pretty gross!!!! ::)

Nonie --- wash 'em off! They stain badly. I made a mistake a couple years ago of not washing the car for the whole lovebug season. Now there's a couple prominent stains on the front end. Not too bad, since my car is fairly light, but if it were dark, :barf:

Re: EWWWWWWWWWWWWW They're back!!!

It seems like this lovebug season is very mild. Haven't seen that many! Last year the pool area was infested, yesterday there weren't many at all.

Frangyomory 05-12-2008 11:19 PM

Re: EWWWWWWWWWWWWW They're back!!!

do you think since they came early they might also leave early...or do we have the month of June as well to contend with the little :edit: :edit: :edit: :edit:

redwitch 05-12-2008 11:45 PM

Re: EWWWWWWWWWWWWW They're back!!!

Fran, bite your tongue! Lovebug season is the month of May. They came in May, they'll leave in May. If they don't, I may sit down and cry even if it is just 6 pairs a day!
