Thanks for the heads up, Dianne!!

Have waited much too long for season five. Tonight seems like forever!

Chi-Town 01-04-2015 11:07 AM

Thanks! Didn't know this.

Can't wait for the show tonight. We visited DuPont's Winterthur Museum in Wilmington, Delaware to see the Downtown Abbey exhibit. It renewed my love for the show. The costumes were amazing to see. Especially loved the kitchen costumes worn by Daisy and Mrs. Patmore. Carson's tuxedo was there too. It was great. Enjoy the evening!

raynan 01-04-2015 01:34 PM

Really looking forward to it. On the cover of todays TV section in the DailySun, who is the guy in the tux standing next to Mary?

Boudicca 01-04-2015 02:45 PM

Can't wait, but WILL, because we record the program, then invite friends over for a Ladies' Evening when we watch each episode and enjoy "high tea" type nibbles. whooeee, simple pleasures

chachacha 01-05-2015 10:44 PM

sorry i don't get the paper, but the one hour special following the premier, Manners of Downton Abbey, was very interesting...the show's historian gave a lot of information about the customs of the day, the fashions, etc....made me want to stand up straighter :)

I have been a fanatic fan of both "Upstairs Downstairs" and now Downton Abbey from the very beginning, but this episode (#1 of season 5) left me under-whelmed and I really have no idea why. It was filled with interesting vignettes which will probably lead to more exciting subject matter in the episodes to come, but it just did not have me on the edge of my seat.

However, having said that, I will still be glued to the TV screen for the rest of the season. It's a really interesting time frame they are going into, basically the fall of the gentry and the rise of the common man ..............

And sit up straight at dinner. Ouch, your back could not touch the chair back. Had to be uncomfortable.

Maybe after three deaths and burdensome plots about a bi-racial love story and a sexual assaut it was time to take a short break.

That was Tom Branson, Lady Mary's brother-in-law.

I just read somewhere that the main focus this season will be on Anna and Bates. Poor Mr. Bates, I hope he didn't off the predator valet, or if he did, he gets off somehow. Like Anna, I couldn't bear to see him put back in prison or worse.

Oh My!

An assignation. . .

and I guess a lady's maid just never knows what could be in her job description. :o

Schaumburger 03-07-2015 01:53 PM

I thought Season 5 was very good. Are Tom and Sybbie really leaving the show? I hope not. I guess that will be answered in Season 6 starting January, 2016.

One minor observation -- when Lady Mary sang "Silent Night" in the season finale, she sang verses I had never heard before. I asked the choir director at my church, and she had never heard those verses either, and she is experienced with English church music.

I have tried to find the answer to what that was with the "Silent Night" lyrics, but so far nothing. Maybe someone here will know.

And here we are. Sunday. But no Downton Abbey tonight. (Sigh)

I must go look up when "Mr. Selfridge" will start the new season. I know it's not the same, but "Mr. Selfridge" helps me through the withdrawal time.

jblum315 03-08-2015 02:22 PM

Someone told me the "Silent Night" lyrics sung on Downton Abbey was the translation of the original German lyrics

I would recommend looking into the background of the real Mr. Selfridge, it is more than interesting. I found a huge bio on the internet with a lot of information on his wife and he, himself.

Laurie2 03-29-2015 04:17 PM

Tonight on PBS, Season 3 of Mr. Selfridge begins. And I think it will be a two-hour episode for the opener.

This might help some of you who, like me, still are feeling some withdrawal symptoms from Downton Abbey.

Lady Laurie. :)

You are so right, Madelaine Amee. He was fascinating. Genius. Creative. Ambitious. Risk-Taker. Student of Human Nature. Passionate. Impulsive. So many, many interesting things about him. -- Come to think of it, I guess he was the first of the Mad Men. -- It is also fun to look at the website for the department store that still bears his name.

I was sorry to hear that season six will be the last of this series. I guess they want to leave when at the top of their game. The season five finale was heartwarming and hopefully all will find happiness by the end of the series next year.

I'm sorry to see it end. But at least we won't have to watch Downton Abbey, the Depression years. Let it end in the Roaring 20's for an exciting last season.

And the best era ever for fashion and jewelry design.
