What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?

My dad was the big gourmet chef in our family, and we hated it when he cooked because he used every pan in the house and we had to clean up afterward. (we loved all his dishes though!) I loved my dad's sauerbraten and spaetzels. It was awesome! Mom did cook occasionally too. I did love my mom's homemade macaroni and cheese!!! They never turn out quite the same when I make them, something is always missing....

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?

On my mothers shopping day we always had hot dogs and corn on the cob. They were so easy for her to fix after grocery shopping and it was the best meal. mmmmm Such a warm and fuzzy memory. Dad was in the Air Force so Mom did her main shopping I think once a month. Later pay checks came 2 times a month so guess she changed to twice a month then.

My mom made the best "westerns" (like an omelet), believe it or not, using ground up SPAM and onions. I made them like that not too long ago and oh, what memories it brought back. I used the old crank meat grinder that attaches to the counter to grind up the SPAM just like she did. It was great!

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?

My fav as a youngster and adult is a boiled dinner with ham shoulder rather than corned beef. Love the one-pot cooking and the leftovers were as yummy as the first meal and is called "bubble & squeak" in England because you fry the leftovers in butter until crispy brown (similar to has browns). The final meal was kale soup made from the broth of the boiled dinner. Just had it the other day and never get sick of the succulent dishes from the meal.

bon apetit ......barb (drooling)

I saw the "favourite meal" heading and immediately thought about boiled dinner. Haven't had it in 100 years. It was my favourite meal as a kid growing up in Nova Scotia. My mother made it in a pressure cooker, I was always afraid it would explode.

Barb, a crock pot sounds much more civilized. I'd appreciate if you could PM me a recipe.

I didnt eat as a kid. All food was disgusting to me. :barf: used to sit at the table with everything stuffed in my cheeks like a chipmunk for hours. I really wish I had that problem now. LOL

My dad was Irish, but my mom was Bohemian and the best cook and baker in the world, so, my favorite dinner was pork, sauerkraut and dumplings.

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?

It's too hard to choose just one! My mom grew up on a farm in Kansas and even after she married and moved to the city, she continued to cook as if she still lived on the farm. We always had enough food to feed unexpected guests and had leftovers to boot.

My very favorite meal was chicken and dumplings (made in the pressure cooker) with homemade, hand rolled noodles. Talk about fattening, but as a child I didn't care...I just ate it all up!

I had two favorite desserts...mom's lemon pudding pie baked in custard cups AND her carrot cookies with confectioner sugar icing.

After I married I continued, and still do to this day, to make the same recipes as very special treats for my grown children and grandchildren...but not often!

One of these days I'll tell you about her homemade stew, fried chicken, and meatloaf...oh so good, too.

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?

This isn't really my favorite meal.....but great comfort food. Anytime I was in bed with a fever, flu, etc. my Mom would make me 'Milk Toast'. This was nothing more than a piece of toast, with butter on it and sprinkled with sugar and hot milk poured over it. Boy or Boy did that make me feel good. Even now, I am smiling with the great memories. I've tried to 'pass' this on to my girls, years ago.....No way will they eat it and can't imagine why I think it is so great.

Barb:
You took me back to my childhood. Boiled dinner with a smoked shoulder was my favorite ,with potatoes and carrots, always cabbage. I can taste it now. Mom made hers in a heavy cast iron skillet , she called a dutch oven. I can smell it now simmering on the stove. Yum!!!!! Topped off with her extra chocolate brownies made from scratch. I was allowed to melt the squares of Bakers chocolate in the double boiler while she prepared the other ingredients. Still make the brownies occasionally but haven't had the boiled dinner in probably 25 years.

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?

Yes, always cabbage with boiled dinner! I wonder why that inexpensive meal lingers in our minds after all these years? Must be a mom/comfort thing.

mfp509 06-14-2008 02:16 AM

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?

I have to comment on the boiled dinner - we also had it with a smoked shoulder usually for Sunday dinner. Then the leftovers during the week were cut up in chunks and sort of fried in a big skillet and it was called "mush". In my home, every Sunday we had a real nice dinner at noon. Sunday night we were on our own - my mom didn't cook. Every night during the week, my mom came home from work and cooked a whole meal. Sometimes there were leftovers but she always put a nice meal on the table.

Creamed Tuna and peas on toast.

Haven't had pea since I was a teenager and my wife of 30 yrs will not allow tuna in the house (sorry Charlie)

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?

Winter was Mom's beef stew. It's still high on my list but I've added a few herbs and spices to it. Summer was fried chicken and her potato salad. yummmmmmm

A favorite treat was bread -- white, French or sourdough with butter and sugar; rye with cream cheese and jam. Either was heaven to me. I never did introduce Jess to white bread with butter and sugar but she has gotten to know and love the rye.

chuck

Your post reminded me of tuna noodle casserole topped with crushed potato chips. I could eat it hot from the oven or cold from the refrigerator the next day.

Never had creamed tuna over toast but did have creamed chipped beef. We called it sh*t on a shingle. That was so so good!

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?

JohnnyM (All’aglio e Olio) I didn't think anyone would know that. But, as for me, Sunday dinner after church. Coming home and smelling the meatballs frying. Trying to get one with out getting hit on the back of your hand with Mom's wooden spoon. If you were fast and got one she would hit you on a dead run in to the parlor on back of your head with her shoe. And she never missed. She was deadly. 1:00PM, Sunday,
At the table, passta Do I miss that!!!!!!

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?

Sundays, pasta with meatballs, sweet italian sausage, pork and steak that had simmered no less than 6 hours in "gravy" not sauce! The italian gravy was a staple used throughout the week! Home made Gnocchi and cavatelli! Creamed chipped beef on toast(s**t on a shingle, yup!), pea soup, beef stew, and pasta, pasta, pasta. I still need my pasta fix every week! Lasagna anyone?? Lets have a pot luck party, I will make the lasagna! 9:30 AM and I'm getting very hungry!!! mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?

Pasta on Sundays with all the meat....Meatballs, sausage, pork, bracolia and sometimes pepperoni.* I still on occasion made it (when I'm not on a diet). It was always called sauce in upstate New York.....Gravy is brown.

My Dad loves All'aglio e Olio, I used to make it for him all the time, but I can't eat too much garlic. Can you imagine an Italian who can't eat garlic, sounds like a sin...

In the Bronx, a very, very Italian neighborhood, we would leave church and smell all the cooking of "gravy" (Ronda) all the way home and by the time we got home, we were into the pot for meatballs or bracolia. Sometimes, if we were really hungry (you couldn't eat before receiving communion in those days), we'd cross the street to grandma's and eat all her bracolia from her pot before going home. She never complained, she was so happy to have her grandkids to feed.

Great memories, I'm getting hungry!

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?

My Grandma's day old biscuits with honey, she had a wood burning stove/oven, a pump in the kitchen for water, but she unways had cold biscuits w/ honey or molasses for us. I'm sure that at some time the biscuits were hot but I only remember them cold. My Dad finally put electric to them but she wouldn't use her new electric stove, she liked her wood burning stove. You know what they say "Almost Heaven W.Va."

Have you tried Cane Garden's meatloaf? I'm sure you have if you are a meatloaf lover like me. I think it is very, very good.

When the wife and I were first married, I remarked once that my mother made great meat loaf. My wife made some and asked for a comparison - - - no comment.

A year of so later my mother came for a visit and made meat loaf - you needed an ax to cut it! Haven't had meat loaf in ages

Mom was a vegetarian. Her spaghetti "gravy" was made with lots of different vegetables with lots of spices. It was always served over angel hair pasta. Ah, the memories...

Gracigirl,

I didnt know anyone else ate salmon patties! LOL We ate those alot when growing up but had them smothered in Mayo, I still like them today with lots of mayo!

renielarson 06-15-2008 02:14 PM

Re: What was your favorite meal when you were a kid?

I'm with you Nonie. I use mayo on my salmon patties, too.

Guess I shouldn't have said anything about using ketchup since I love it and use a lot of it...just not on salmon patties. I dip grilled cheese sandwiches in ketchup and use it on my scrambled eggs...both of which many find odd.

To each our own...

Homemade vegatable soup

My Nana made the best. My mother learned to make it just like Nana.

They left out the lama beans because they knew I didn't like them.

Still love veggie soup in the dead of winter--with no lama beans!!!

I love meatloaf too, but not when it is served as a meal. It needs to be cold, sliced and as a sandwich with ketchup.
