A Plea to Smokers

As a former smoker, I have no quarrel with those who are still addicted to the little boogers.

However, throwing butts on the ground in this beautiful place is just wrong.

Throwing butts into the pine needles in front of Walgreen's is wrong and stupid, and will start a fire.

Yes, this really happened. It took my bottle of water and an employee running out with another bottle to tamp it down. Thank goodness it didn't get any bigger before someone saw it.

redwitch 02-20-2015 08:44 PM

Sadly, you really can't fix stupid. Glad y'all caught it in time.

kcrazorbackfan 02-20-2015 08:44 PM

I never have smoked; lost my Dad 25 years ago this month due to his smoking. It is one of those incredibly nasty habits I can't stand to be around and cigarette butts are really a pet peeve of mine. You see them along the streets and roads, in parking lots, outside of businesses, I have found them in my yard that people walk by :swear:. A lot of fires are started each year along highways because people toss the cigarettes outside their vehicle and it's only a matter of time before a really good fire gets started in dry pine straw on a windy day in TV.

Allegiance 02-20-2015 08:56 PM

Selfish people, most smokers, in NYC store owners get fined $100's of dollars for not picking up the butts, but never have I seen a smoker fined for littering.

leftyf 02-21-2015 08:46 AM

Personally, I think filtered cigarettes should be outlawed just like plastic shopping bags. Unfiltered cigarette butts dissolve in just days.

Bay Kid 02-21-2015 08:50 AM

Cig butts are litter. I see them around greens/tee boxes and they will still be there next year EXCEPT someone has pickup others trash. Sad but most smokers don't consider their butt litter???

sueandskip 02-21-2015 09:14 AM

LOL.....He said BUTT LITTER !

dirtbanker 02-21-2015 09:36 AM

The world is the smokers ashtray!
A truly disgusting habit that smells terrible and makes people ugly.

The good news is teen smoking is continually going down, Florida just reported its lowest teen smoking rate ever (7.5%). truth - Home

Easy to pick out the smokers on the road, they are driving 10 mph under the speed limit with the window down. No hurry to get where they are going, because they cant smoke when they get there...

TheVillageChicken 02-21-2015 09:59 AM

I smoke on occasion, but I never throw my roaches away.

Barefoot 02-21-2015 10:02 AM

It's great news that teenage smoking rates are rapidly declining.
I feel so sorry for anyone who has spent a lifetime smoking - it's a powerful addiction.
But there is no excuse for discarding cigarette butts in public areas. It's a fire hazard.
I often see butts on golf courses :yuck:

Let me get this straight. Many posters favor increase pressure and penalties for smokers support the government's rules in forbidding smoking in public places but support legalization of recreational marijuana which holds more cancer bearing agents than cigarettes and now we have a campaign against e-cigarettes. Hmmmmmmm

I don't understand it either, but maybe they eat it in Brownies?

2BNTV 02-21-2015 10:45 AM

I lost too many family members due to smoking to ever support this habit. I realize it's an addiction, but I think it's still worth, kicking the habit.

I personally can't be around anyone that smokes as it makes me ill, but that's me. Beside who likes kissing, an ashtray. :yuck:

justjim 02-21-2015 12:08 PM

Several very serious fires have been caused by people who are careless and think the whole world is their ashtray. Lives have been lost. I see the need for medical marijuana but I'm not convinced regarding recreational marijuana as I can see its use getting out of hand.

I think he has a valid observation, check it out the next time you see slow driving car with the windows down, the occupant(s) likely will be smoking. I really thought there would be more pushback from the smokers; it may be that don't want to out themselves as the people whom are littering with leftovers from that nasty, life-threatening habit. It really is a shame to see the beauty of TV marred by people who don't think twice about littering - cigarette butts, candy wrappers, plastic bags, plastic water bottles, fast food trash, etc., etc. :boom:

Uberschaf 02-21-2015 12:21 PM

Now that hurt. Because I'm a smoker now I'm a ugly selfish person with a cig butt in my pocket because I don't litter.

Uberschaf: I quit smoking in 1973 for several reasons and had only one reason not to....I loved it.

however, in many respects economically and socially I had been taken aback at the nasty manner in which the government and some people have acted toward smokers.

Thank you for being considerate of others and not littering.

Personal Best Regards

I am sure there are a lot of considerate smokers; I know I tried to be one. I always stuck the cigarette butt back in my pack if I couldn't find a trash can. Thank you for, Upberschaf!

"Although cannabis has been smoked widely in Western countries for more than four decades, there have been no reported cases of lung cancer or emphysema attributed to marijuana."

I think that would be wonderful; but sadly I also think if they don't have enough sense not to throw a lit cigarette into dry pine needles they won't have enough sense to field strip their butts.

I'd like to tan their butts.

Economically I say keep smokin fools, somebody has to pay those taxes and I don't want it to be me.

Smokers have been ostracized and yet they huddle in the bitter cold right outside the front door of a bar or restaurant to smoke and then throw the butts in the bushes.

Go enjoy it in your car with the windows up!

Bonny 02-21-2015 06:45 PM

Why do smoking threads always end up with everyone getting nasty ? :ohdear:

It's a window into their character and what they truly are.

Because smoking itself is nasty. Smokers don't mind bringing their stinky, nasty smelling clothes into a restaurant, church; any establishment where nonsmokers are also; this is a way for the nonsmokers to be nasty back. :yuck:

I had a "no smoking" sign affixed to the dash of my patrol car on the passenger side - my domain, my rules.

And it is a CLEAR window into our character since our lungs aren't blackened by smoke and what we truly are, are people that a large percentage of us won't have a myriad of health issues due to smoking.

I'm happy for you. But my response was to the question whythe nasty comments? Now regarding my comment about the nasty posters, I would like to add intolerant, obsessive and irrational.

Me thinks you must be a smoker. My daughter and many others with asthma are highly allergic to cigarette smoke. It makes those people really ill. The smell on your breath, in the air, on your clothes, on your furniture and in your car can make some people really ill. It is pollution of the worst sort! Sorry if you are offended but cigarettes are highly offensive to most people therefore the nasty posts. A nasty habit gets nasty comments.

Kannon451 02-21-2015 07:58 PM

I have a house in TV. Was there last week. In NY now working on getting this house sold.
