Restaurant monopolys
The Village expansion is growing rapidly. There is a growing need for a greater variety of restaurants; however, all we have is the same tired run-of-the-mill country clubs. We have a single owner that now controls four country clubs plus Scooples. I suggest this policy needs reviewed by The Village Corporation.
This single owner monoply also applies to other retail outlets such as barber shops...why only Cals? |

Why NOT? This is not a plan, this is something that happened. If someone wants to run that many restaurants or Barber shops, why stop them? There is nothing stopping anyone from opening a restaurant here. Or another barber shop. I don't think our country clubs are bad or tired and the prices are sure right. How would you remedy the problem? What if you were the one renting out the buildings? What exactly would you do??? The Villages can't force Chipotle that I like to come here. They can offer and if Chipotle were smart they would come, but not even restaurants know how BIG we are. Demographers are hopelessly behind the times on this place and demographers are who restaurants and businesses consult when they are looking for a place to open. TooJays knows how good the business is and we must all like it enough to support two places going on three. . |

Well, I sure am glad Lopez is running Havana now. There was a time when I would not go to Havana because it was so poorly run. Nobody could get it right. But since Lopez took over Havana, we have had some wonderful dinners there.
And I am happy to see Orange Blossom up and running. Nice casual atmosphere. Good service. Really like the fish and chips. Orange Blossom had struggled for a while. Some thought once it closed, it might never re-open. But then along came somebody who likes to run TV restaurants and Orange Blossom now returns us to "those thrilling days of yesteryear" -- where it all started. And I am glad it was rescued by an investor who has lots of restaurant experience and wants to stay in the business. So I'm OK with people who know what they are doing and have buying power with suppliers and pay their bills so they they don't run out of Goose. Redundant? Yeah. Somewhat. -- But a monopoly? No. |

I agree that having one person owning so many venues may pose a long term problem. I also find that we have the same people commenting on everything and after awhile many of us tend to ignore their posts.

As long as Cal's provides the excellent care it currently provides, I will be a customer even if another shop opens closer to my home. I frequent Evans and Belle Glade because I like the food, entertainment and prices. I was disappointed they changed the rules on the LoyalTee cards, but have gotten my monies worth just on martinis.

The number one rule when you have a question about things here is :FOLLOW THE MONEY!

This is posted by one of those people. What would you do if you owned the properties to be rented? Leave them empty until the fine restaurants with high prices frequented by less people come? Or would you think for three or four weeks about renting them to someone who is already running a successful business, knows the area and the residents and can pay their bills?????? This is plain old economics. This is common sense. This is how the world works. This is free enterprise. This is the American Way. The follow the money remark can only be pointing to The Morses, who are the owners of the property. I WISH they would still run the restaurants because they did it so well, but it appears that their business plan is to establish a business and then sell to someone who would continue running it. This is not wish in one hand and............................ Good Morning. Gracie, who you may have on ignore. |

The ones you mentioned, owned by the same person, are some of my favorites. I'm sure the Villages will welcome anyone who wants to start a new restaurant.

I would like to see cheap yet healthy such as a Wahoo's. Wahoo's Fish Taco | Drop In. Have Fun. Eat Well.
and a good burger joint like an In-N-Out. In-N-Out Burger |
And I want a Boston Market and a Cafe Sport and a Palm Restaurant. And I'm sure people in hell really want some ice water. Personally, im content with what we have. Food is good in most places, staff is more than competent, prices are reasonable.
As to Cal's, you won't find another barbershop in TV itself -- they are at least partially owned by the Morses. Ditto the beauty school. |
Actually, there is a Hair Cuttery in Pinellas Plaza and also in the new shopping plaza by Brownwood.

Hmmm... I detect some jealousy on the part of the OP toward a hard working spirit that is willing to take on multiple endeavors. What next? Someone to rail on golfers for carrying 14 clubs? Or have trash pickup once a week instead of twice? Or go to a alphabetical rotation to go to the entertainment at the squares? Jeez, what next?

I thought what to post after reading this thread, but there is everything I could think of within golf cart distance that I like to eat and at very high quality. I am sorry, but I have nothing to complain about when it comes to food.

If you are dissatisfied, please feel free to open your own eating establishment. Start-up costs for a modest venture probably run, minimally, in the high six figures. Perhaps your friend who chimed in on your behalf can lend you the money... |
I love it ! I think Fred has done an awesome job. His Country Clubs have a nice variety of different things, the staff is great and the prices are good !!
Can't wait til Mike & Gina at City Fire open Honest John's next month ! They also do an awesome job, the staff is great and there is a nice variety of food at good prices. Carry on Fred, Mike & Gina !! :crap2: |

I appreciate and agree with your concerns. Its going to be like dealing with the cable However, in my view the village government is limited in what they can and can't do and/or disinterested in certain areas. Your better hope is that the market settles this problem. If you are new here in TV and on TOTV be aware there are a number of posters that will feel a need to defend anyone and anything they feel is in the slightest manner a critic of The Villages. Others like me believe it is what it is |
all these I WANTS! dont you think if there was a buck to be made,, these folks would open here,,, there is a reason the devloper got out the food business,,, NO MONEY IN IT!,, the last huge pink elephant is Katie Bells,, what a dump!,, no we do not need the old days,,the old days are for the old people,, the person that buys here today is a huge difference from the person who purchased a trailer on the north side! Once a week trash pick up is on they way BTW, just look at the deterioration of the entertainment!,,, you think old Harold would have stood still for a $125 ticket to see a singer? The times they are a changing! Follow the MONEY!

For the most part I like Katie Belles and Cattle Baron as well. However, I am not happy that Cattle Baron eliminated the soup, salad, and bread bar to just a salad bar. Soup is now an appitizer and they only serve hard rolls. The next thing is not the food, but their policy on their gift carts. After you first use the card, there is a $2.50 per month service fee. These two things kind of took some of the pedals off this bloom... |
