I have not seen any info on this subject. What about people like us, who when we come down, like to work in TV. Part Time or Full time. Does anyone out there have any experience with coming down and looking for employment? Either as a snowbird or as a full time resident. I know for me, i could not bear to just do activities totally without some type of meaninful employment. I am interested in hearing about your experiences involving employment....in particular in a porfessional management capacity.

Hello, while I am new to TOTV, I have been reading posts for over a year. My husband and I have been back and forth for over two years in deciding to buy in The Villages. We wintered last year in an RV park outside The Villages. I am a RN, Case Manager buy trade so I decided to work at The Villages Hospital to really get a feel for the place. It was a good experience, I not only learned about the Hospital/Area but also learned from the patients who were Village residents. The staff at the hospital welcomed me with open arms and I still miss them. So, as soon as we make up our minds to buy, I know that working in The Villages will not be a problem.

There is a website... http://www.careersinthevillages.com/searchJobs.asp although now they refer you to the local newspaper for most of the opportunities but it may be of some help. The HR department in TV also, at least it used to, has binders full of job openings in TV. I still work full time as well as my wife but not in TV. We intended to work a few years after we came down and although we work outside TV, neither if us really had much of a problem finding jobs.

This brings up a question I've had. Is everyone there a rich or well off retiree or am I the only one who will have to find employment for a few years even if only part time? I cant seem to be able to find the sugar moms club. If anyone is interested in adopting me let me know, I do dishes. Benj

That's not enough any more. You'd also have to remove any snakes (and politicians) on the property! (Nope, I'm not a sugar mom.) :)

Just by reading TOTV, I've noticed there are a fair number of people in TV who still work.
I think most seem to indicate they are working part-time.

I'm with you Ben - I'll be working full-time in TV but as a nurse I expect it to be only 3 shifts or maybe even just 2 weekend days. The other 4 or 5 I'll be enjoying everything that TV offers.

I worked full-time for the first 3-1/2 years we were here. One thing to know so you won't be surprised is that Florida does not pay squat! I took a more than 50% cut in pay to do the exact same professional job I did for 23 years in Texas. But it was the highest paying job in my field that I could find without having to go to Orlando. And even in Orlando it would have been at least a 40% cut in pay. So with that said, there are jobs here. I am not working now for health reasons. My husband ( a retired police officer) has been working for the past two years PT for TV at one of the rec centers. He loves it even though the pay is only $7.25 an hour. I hope this helped.

My wife and I moved here from Orlando about 16 months ago. My area of expertise is in the medical field (radiology to be exact). I have been in this field over 38 years.
Prior to moving to this area, we spent a ton of money on stamps, mailings etc sending employment applications to every medical facility in the area. Believe it or not, I got not one response. My thought was, with all the senior citizens in this area, there must be a zillion doctors to care for them. And with doctors come ancillary services: lab, radiology, prosthetics, pulmonary groups.
But then I got hit with a dose of Villages reality. These doctors spend about a nickel a week on their office costs. None of them have ANY equipment for doing the simplest of exams. Everything gets sent out to a lab or radiology facility, etc. There are about 3 stand alone radiology facilities in the area (each fully staffed); lab, etc I don't know. I have looked in the paper, online, kept sending out applications (even with the price of stamps) and finally after 15 months I got a job. But only because an office in Ocala was expanding into the Villages and the group of physicians actually bought equipment for this expansion and needed someone who knew what they were doing to run it.
So lotsa luck on finding a job around here and then a decent salary. (I only make good money because of my experience with this equipment).

My hubby is a veterinarian, so upon moving here, he signed up as a relief vet. He does not want to work full time, just when he chooses. He's always bombarded with offers and takes the ones he wants. I work also, but it is my own business that I can run from home.

Just stating this to let you know that lots and lots of people work here.

Hi - I chose to continue to work. I love what I do I'm a travel agent. I do not see myself at this moment not working.

SABR: Thanks for sharing your experience. Currently, we are grappling with who to do about jobs. I can't see myself doing nothing, aside from golf and recreation in TV, I have to do something besides that or it will drive me crazy :)

Is Ocala a better place to look? I don't mind driving outside TV.

TT - Are you talking about doing something because you need the pay or just feeling fulfilled? The reason that I ask is that there are many jobs within TV that pay a small amount but can be fun. For example I talked to two golf starters at the Havana course and they love what they are doing. They have been a starter at various TV courses for the past few years. They don't make much money (something like $7 an hour) but they also get half price priority golf memberships and they only NEED to work 3 days a week at 4 hours a clip. They love golf obviously so they love what they do.

I've been a legal secretary for over 30 years and truly was at the top of my field. I looked for a job here. First, in my field, then in other fields as either a secretary or administrative assistant. The best (??!!!) salary I was offered was $12.50/hour with no benefits and no overtime (this was for an Ocala law firm that I know was charging $750/hour for appellate work -- my speciality). I literally started laughing and said I would rather be homeless. So, I started my own business. It is growing slowly and steadily. In January, I had 1 client (DickY). February gave me another one. By April, I had 7. Now, I have over 20 and getting about 5 more a month. I'm not doing this to earn a little extra money, I'm doing it to earn a living since I'm too young for Social Security or retirement.

There are many things you can do here. If you just need a little bit of pocket change, work for The Villages in the rec centers or as a gatekeeper or the like. If you just want to do something to make you feel useful, volunteer -- there are many places that need help. The stores around here are nearly always looking for help of some kind, usually part-time. If you're in the medical field, do check out the hospital. Substitute teaching is a viable choice as well. As was said, be prepared to take a hefty cut in pay -- $10/hr is truly considered a good wage.

The point is there are things you can do. Sometimes it will take time to find your niche but if you work hard enough, are willing to do your best, be reliable, honest and ethical, you will succeed. (If someone would have told me that I'd be doing things like watching and cleaning houses, weeding, watching pets, etc. for a living in my 50s I would have died laughing.)

It's good to work for yourself! You can set your own hours, etc. As Red and I know, you need to be aware that to have your own business in Florida, you must have a license. Getting one requires filling out lots of forms and writing checks to various state entities. Heaven help you if you don't get one and get caught doing business in Florida.
Using licensed contractors can help you if you ever have liability or other issues. It is also against the law to use unlicensed contractors.

Those of us that work for the golf course management company that operates the golf courses, here in TV, still have to pay full price for our priority memberships. We receive 50% off our daily green fees. We are also entitled to a 30% discount off all the merchandise sold in the course pro shops. There is also a 10% discount on all equipment except Ping and Cobra. These are some pretty good perks, but the pay is only $7.25 per hour.

Inda50, after all those postings it must be clear that when you retire, it should be RETIRED. NO MORE WORK. If you need to keep busy do some volunteer work. I stop working in Jan 2008 and have not done a thing, except waiting for the house to sell to pack my stuff and go to TV, after 45 hard working years I have enough.

Oh - I think the 50% off of greens fees works out better. I knew the pay was low but the two starters I talked to really like their jobs and thought the 50% made it palatable.

Where are the jobs at the rec centers and golf courses listed, or do you have to apply at each one individually?

A little part time job for me would be ideal. Just got to find the right fit.

For travel agents you need to meet all the requirements of Florida before you can get a Florida travel agent number.

Like so many other licensing agencies, they just increased the requirements.

I agree with what Sam wrote. It is not worth the penalties to do business with out the necessary licenses.

You can not compare the salaries in Ca., and Fl., or N.Y., and Pa...I worked as an EMT many years ago in N.Y., made the same salary I am making now as a Medic! Go figure..

The company I work for is big in Florida, I'm thinking of transferring in a couple of years when this contract is complete. The pay for us is alittle better in Florida, because the way the contracts are configured, and NO STATE INCOME TAXES!

With that said how cool would it be to be a starter. I can't wait I'm getting tired of building roads, Asphalt is hot.

My wife drives a School Bus, I don't know how she puts up with the kids, she says she canwants to drive the little trolley when we get there. See you soon

Donna, totally agree that comparisons between these states would be a joke, but I did expect a living wage -- sorry, but $12.50/hour is not a living wage, especially when I factor in commute costs to Ocala, clothing and lunches. I knew that I would take a large pay cut moving here -- I expected 50%. I did not expect 90% with no benefits.

One thing I have heard from several local employers is they have no reason to pay more -- they can hire retirees at low wages who just want something to do and don't want to lower their Social Security. So, you have a state with depressed wages to begin with and then add in people willing to take low wages because they're bored. I do wonder how young families manage to survive in surrounding neighborhoods.

IMHO I applaud the retirees that want to continue to work. It's keeping them going and active. And 9 out of 10 of those jobs are jobs that some younger people might consider "beneath" them. So, for all you retirees who still want to work and are working, whether out of boredom or not, I applaud you. :clap2:

Every human being, not matter what age, has something good they can offer their community. I, for one, would go nuts if I didn't do some kind of work. But, believe me, I leave lots of time for pleasure. ;D

Chels, I agree that people should be able to work if they want to but not at the expense of the local economy. By being willing to accept a job at a much lower wage, they hurt those around them.

I don't know about Chicago, but I know that in California the grocery "bagboys" were the youngsters. Home Depot and Lowe's rarely had employees over 35. Hostesses in restaurants were young because that is how you got your foot in the door to be a server. Jess worked for Linen & Things in California. The oldest employee was the assistant manager -- she was 32. I don't think that the retirees are taking the jobs that young people don't want to do, I think the employers are hiring retirees so that they don't have to pay benefits or decent wages. If the retirees would say, "Yes, I want to work for you but not at minimum wage," I think it would have a huge impact on the workforce here.

As I said, if you want to work for pocket change or to have something to do, work for The Villages -- there are a lot of jobs that are perfect for retirees there. To alleviate boredom, volunteer. There are many things people can do without accepting a job that a local could do if employers would pay a decent wage and offer benefits.

When a skilled position pays $10-12.50 an hour with no benefits and that's called a "good" wage, the local economy suffers. Here, if you're not in the medical field, it is hard to make a living wage and even those wages are seriously depressed compared to even Southern Florida or Orlando.

Red, it is possible that many work because they must. They work for any wage they can get because they need benefits or to keep a roof over their heads. They may say it's for fun because they are to proud to admit that they struggle. I may be dead wrong but I suspect many rely upon that extra income.

Sam, I'm sure that many work because they have to. I know my neighbor does. She runs trolley tours. The point is if retirees wouldn't accept the low wages or at least just work in areas where only Villagers would be hired, I think the salaries here would at least be equitable to the rest of the State. And I do believe that the problem isn't those who have to work -- they would happily work for higher wages -- but rather it is those who work for "fun" and don't want the higher salary because it would hurt their retirement income and/or taxes.

I will have to locate Crispers and meet everyone. As to your current message I would like to work part time so your reply was good - I work a few hours at a local golf course and deliver FLOWERS a couple hours for a lady friend who has a florish shop here. Crispers is pretty easy to find. It is the last shop/restaurant in the shopping center where Publix is on 466.
