Pictures of Brooklyn
Below are a few pictures I took this past weekend when we visited NY. They were taken in Brooklyn Heights and Carroll Gardens (my childhood neighborhood).
How many of you recall running through a sprinkler on a hot day in the city? Great memories. Enjoy. http://lh5.ggpht.com/dtstiles/SIX-IY...8/IMG_0973.jpg http://lh4.ggpht.com/dtstiles/SIX-Jp...8/IMG_0984.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/dtstiles/SIX-MQ...8/IMG_1012.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/dtstiles/SIYJNB...8/IMG_0985.jpg http://lh6.ggpht.com/dtstiles/SIYJNr...8/IMG_0990.jpg http://lh3.ggpht.com/dtstiles/SIYJN9...8/IMG_1003.jpg http://lh3.ggpht.com/dtstiles/SIX-KA...8/IMG_0993.jpg http://lh4.ggpht.com/dtstiles/SIX-LN...8/IMG_1005.jpg http://lh4.ggpht.com/dtstiles/SIX-Ms...8/IMG_1017.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/dtstiles/SIX-Nc...8/IMG_1023.jpg |

Travel,
These pics put a smile on my face! Court Street Pastry, Union Street, Nino's Restaurant...So many Sunday's were spent sitting on the stoop..We never wanted to go in at night.. Seeing the Piers also brings back fond memories, I have two Uncles that worked there all their lives.. Thanks so much for the walk down memory lane! |
Re: Pictures of Brooklyn

Re: Pictures of Brooklyn
You're making me homesick :'( :'( I have this fantasy of relocating back to Brooklyn in a Brownstone with a stoop, in a neat neighborhood near Prospect Park :'(
Yeah, it's only a fantasy cuz I couldn't take the harsh winters anymore ::) THANKS FOR SHARING THE PICS ! |
Re: Pictures of Brooklyn
Coney, I know exactly what your feeling. I always wanted to go back to my victorian brownstone in Chicago, so many wonderful childhood memories but I know I couldnt even afford to live in that neighborhood now and you know what they say, "You cant go home again" ! For many years tho I wanted to try!

Re: Pictures of Brooklyn
We tend to step back in time, to when this world was so different..I would love to go back to my childhood home in Brooklyn, but to find who???
All my friends are gone, and the neighbors have all moved..It would never be the same..I am kinda glad we can keep these memories, just the way they were! |
Re: Pictures of Brooklyn
Nonie & Donna....... y'all are so right...... we just can't go back home CUZ it's not the same anymore :'( I was born in Coney Island and have so many memories of the way it was and I would probably cry for real if I ever went back to see it now :'(
But, it's great to have those FUN memories ;D MORE BROOKLYN PHOTOS....................... PLEASE ............ |
Re: Pictures of Brooklyn
Coney.
I was there last year. Coney Island has it's own minor league baseball stadium and it is very nice. We have one here in Staten Island too. Of course, there is a rivalry. I'll send you some links I was very impressed with Coney, the boadwalk was very nice. It looked so much better than it did in the 70's and 80's. Shirleevee |
Re: Pictures of Brooklyn
Shirleevee........ THANKS for telling me that. Gosh, it's almost worth a visit to NYC to go see Coney Island again. When I was 14 years old, living in The Projects, my girlfriend and I used to skip school, take the subway and go to Coney Island...... spend all our money..... and have to walk home.
I had heard it deteriorated badly and was rundown. I'm so glad to know CI is nice again! Can't wait to visit 8) |
Re: Pictures of Brooklyn
Here are a few more. Many are shots of the architecture, as we were visiting my daughter who is majoring in historic preservation and loves the brownstowns.
I like the reflection of the older buildings in the glass in picture 7. Picture 4 is one of the new 'water sculptures' around Manhattan - notice the Statue of Liberty in the background. And I couldn't resist a picture of my old apartment building on the corner of 4th Pl and Court Street (last photo). Hanley's (the oldest bar in Brooklyn - 1874) is still on the street level, with it's mahogany, brass and marble bar and original tin ceilings. The outdoor patio area with tables was our front yard, or what we referred to as the "aerie way." Regarding Coney Island, my first roller coaster ride was on the Cyclone at age 5, a family tradition. We also rode the Steeplechase horses and the famous Parachute jump. I took Mr. Travel there for the 1st time two years ago to see a Cyclones game, eat at the original Nathan's and ride the Cyclone, but I believe that 2008 is it's last season before it is dismantled, so you may wish to plan a trip there soon! Thank you so much for sharing these photos. Since I was a child, I have been visiting NYC for weekends, as a getaway and on business - in various stages of my life ....and I absolutely love it. I didn't realize what I had missed by not going to Brooklyn. How beautiful..................Would love to hear and see more. |

CIB: We did the same in Chicago, skipped school and went to Riverview Park for 2 cent days, admission and all the rides were 2 cents each (in the mid 50's) http://history.amusement-parks.com/riverviewmain.htm |
Re: Pictures of Brooklyn
CIB,
I sent pictures to your email......... Oh, the Cyclone cost is $8.00 for a shortened ride. Shirleevee |
Re: Pictures of Brooklyn
Shirleevee....... I didn't get the pics ???
And,,,,,, if you're even suggesting that I'd ride on the Cyclone nowadays ? 1rnfl 1rnfl 1rnfl 1rnfl ! Perhaps the Carousel would be more my speed now ;D P.S. Is the Parachute ride still there? That was one of my favorites ;D |
Re: Pictures of Brooklyn
The parachute frame was still standing when we were in Coney Island two years ago, but they have not operated it as a ride for a very, very long time (at least 20 years).
Did you ever ride the Steeplechase horses? That ride was terrific, but would definitely be ruled 'unsafe' these days. The horses sped around the steeplechase track on top of a building while rocking backward and forward, and I remember riding it when I was really young - maybe 5? We purchased a round card ticket on a string that you wore like a necklace around your neck, and the ride attendant would punch a hole in it for each ride you went on. Because my grandfather worked at Coney Island, we seldom got the tickets punched and rode all day. Also, can you imagine anyone in this day and age getting away with running a "Freak Show" like the ones at old Coney Island? Believe it or not, they still have a booth near the Cyclone where you can pay to "Shoot the Freak." Coney Island history: http://www.westland.net/coneyisland/ |
Re: Pictures of Brooklyn
travel........ THANKS for that update; of course I rode on the Steeplechase Horses, many times.
Like I said, two silly 14-year-old girls we were....... and Coney Island was our playground. I learned to float in the FREEZING ocean water on the beach and if I remember correctly........ Tuesdays were fireworks night, all summer long ? And was it the D Train to CI ?? Haven't been there since age 15 :'( and that was a very long time ago ::) |
Re: Pictures of Brooklyn
My fondest thoughts of Coney Island are, Nathan's, the fire works, The Cyclone.....
I can remember getting off The Cyclone, and getting sick in one of the garbage pails..OMG was I embarrassed... |
Re: Pictures of Brooklyn

Re: Pictures of Brooklyn
Add these to your list, Coney -
- Learning to ride a bike, play ball, fish, ice skate and roller skate at Prospect Park - and going to the zoo to feed peanuts to the elephants before riding the carousel - Learning to swim in the salt-water indoor pool at the St. George Hotel in Bklyn Heights - doo-wop singers on the street corners every Friday and Saturday night - we had a great group of guys who sang on the corner of 4th Pl and Court St where we lived - Going to Shore Parkway at Fort Hamilton every weekend to watch the progress on the building of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge -Before the bridge, taking the ferry to "Staten Allen" from 69th and Shore Pkwy - The Hamilton House for really special occasions |
