Fiber Optic Cable
 

Do any of the new village developments have fiber optic cable installed? We understand that Verizon Fios can only offer services where fiber optic cables are available. We live in California and want to transfer our cable service when we move to TV if possible. Thanks for any replies.

Doubt if that technology is here on the compound.

If I'm not mistaken our house was pre-wired with fiber optic cable. We had PRISM TV with Centurylink and transferred it up here. Centurylink was here the other day and said he was hung up (time wise) in the northern section running the fiber optic cables for them and confirmed all the houses down here were pre-wired, in what he called our "smart boxes". Is that the same thing you are inquiring about??

Could you please explain where "up here" and "down here" are?

I'm hoping it means north vs south, as opposed to up and down, if you know what I mean.

Yes, most homes have fiber to the premise but that won't help you with Verizon. There FIOS service is not available here.

I thought the fiber was strictly Brighthouse, but I could be mistaken.

Brighthouse uses coax for the last mile. Century Link is the only fiber optic player in The Villages

I have Century Link Fiber to the house (I only use their internet service). I believe they offer it to all houses south of 466A and perhaps other areas also??

It works fine. They offer a variety of internet speeds. Rumor has it 1 gigabit/sec is available. Century Link also has an IPTV offering. I don't have it so I can't comment.

There fiber optic coverage is much bigger than that. They are dropping fiber in homes way North of 466.

Hahaha....sorry, I get so confused as to where we are now.:loco: We lived in SW Florida for 23 years, from Philly originally. "Up here" is up from SWFL, where we moved from...and "down here" I meant in south Villages, below 466A.

Is it really faster than Comcast, VillagesAV? Our comcast speed is pathetic. I would gladly pay more for better speed. My relative up north has fiber optic and lightning speed. What speed would you ask for if given a choice?

Theoretically it could be faster but the fastest Internet I've measured in The Villages is always Xfinity /Comcast. There cheapest $19 plan measures 30 Mbps download.

CFrance, you need to locate the problem with your service. Go to Http://Speedtest.net and run a test. Try it wireless and try it with an ethernet cable plugged directly into the router. 9 out of 10 times when a customer complains about slowness it's old hardware, a software problem or poor wifi performance. Super fast Internet will never make a 4 year old computer or 2nd generation iPad fast.

I did. It's 40 ping, 30.05 download, 6.12 upload. Had to do it twice, because the first time the test hung up and timed out. I rebooted the laptop; second try worked.

You're good! 30 Mbps is fast enough to stream 4 high definition Netflix streams and have a dozen PC browsing the Internet simultaneously. Unless you're moving huge files, its more than adequate.

I live about a well hit driver & a strong 7 iron south of SR 42 and have CL fiber.

But... compared to JoMar's speed in post #17, mine seems like a crawl. I frequently have trouble opening certain windows or navigating within TOTV.

I GUARANTEE you would never notice a difference between 30 Mbps and a Million Mbps when browsing the internet opening Web pages. You wouldn't notice it streaming 4 or 5 simultaneous HD Netflix or Vudu streams either. The only time you would ever notice a difference is if you were downloading huge gigabit files.

100+ Mbps download speeds are for bragging rights more than anything else today...

I bet your problem is your computer or tablet, how old is it?

I've had Century Link internet since 2011 north of 466A south of 466. Whenever I've called in the past they call my service 'to the curb'. I have no modem, plug the router or computer into the wall jack directly. They said it was fiber optic. I only have 10mpbs service, but have never had an outage in four years and have no problem watching movies on Netflix. Speed tests generally show 9 or better. However, the upload speed is not good. When downloading video to Youtube it does takes longer than I expected. I pay $59 a month plus tax for internet and home phone with unlimited long distance, caller ID and call block.

I recently called to get 40mpbs so I could get better upload speed, it would of increased my bill about $15 a month, so I passed on that for now. I have TV with Directv since 2008 so I can't comment on Prism TV.

We continually have dropped service for 5 minutes at a time. After many unsuccessful repair trips here, it still happens. Today our DVR went out and when they tried via phone to reboot it, we lost all our recorded shows. Is there anything better than this??

Hardware issues are tough, they're unavoidable. I've been very happy with the Comcast / Xfinity X1 platform, it's the latest and greatest but even they can fail. 100% reliability doesn't exist in set-top boxes.

It's a four-year-old solid-state Toshiba Portege Z935-P300. I've wondered if it's becoming loaded or is about to wear out. My husband gets the same speeds on his Toshiba and has similar hanging-up problems but not as much as mine.

Also, my laptop has stopped working out on the lanai. Cannot browse.

Sorry to go off topic. I was starting with Comcast and maybe need to start at the other end.
