Cut your own hair or cut your own lawn?

I was thinking the other day that some men probably spend about the same every year on haircuts as they do lawn cuts

30 x 8 months=240 lawn
hair cut with tip $18 240/18= 13 haircuts a year

I think if I had to choose one or the other, to cut costs, cutting my own hair might make more sense. A well recommended hair clipper set is $90. That's a bit less than lawn equipment.

If you botch up your haircut----whatever you had before will return. That's not always true with a lawn.

How long would it take to cut your own hair? It has to be less than cutting the grass. It's certainly cooler.

Or is this another one of my hair-brained ideas?

Hubby hasn't paid for a haircut since we moved here. He has a set. Of course he doesn't have any hair on top and uses the 3 blade on the sides. I do recommend that you let someone else cut it for you as it is hard to get all of it straight when doing it by yourself. He used to let me cut it but once I got his ear and now he cuts it himself. lol

Men's haircuts are $ 7 (w/o tip) at Big Al's in Bellview on 441 - ask for Kris, she's # 1

:icon_wink: I would guess that is how most Villagers would do it...(w/o tip)

I heard a story once about a Villager going to Big Al's with six - $1.00 off coupons and he wanted the $6.00 haircut at no cost. :ohdear:

Ooper 05-20-2015 03:59 PM

Use Big Al's all the time. No waiting. With tip probably spend less than $100 annually.

Villages PL 05-20-2015 04:34 PM

At big Al's they always ask you where your from. So you say, "I'm from
The Villages." Aha, they think, "we got your number buddy. Now you have no excuse for not leaving a big tip."

One day a woman from The Villages complained about the high price for a woman's hair cut. They had just raised the price and she didn't know it, so she complained.

I was in one of the chairs getting a haircut and I heard what they said about her after she left. Holy cow!! They said she was cheap like all the other people who come from The Villages. Guess they forgot I was from the Villages too. They said Villagers are the worst tippers. Let me tell you, I really got an earful that day.

This was about 5 or 6 years ago and I never went back.

bluedog103 05-20-2015 04:45 PM

I've been going to Big Al's for over 4 years. $7 haircut. $1 coupon in the Daily Sun. I always give a $5 tip. No complaints so far from the barber or from me. I've never had a bad haircut there.

Hair cutting equipment takes up a lot less space than lawn cutting equipment. If you need to skimp on expenses; I would rather have the room in the garage (and also not have the smell).

John_W 05-20-2015 05:31 PM

I've cut my own yard my whole life, although now with a CYV we only have a small patch in the back for which I use a push mower. I've cut my own hair since 1988, it's not that hard if you keep it trimmed. I use a small rechargeable beard trimmer with an adjustable guard that controls the length.

If you only pay for having your lawn cut 8 months out of the year, what do you do the other 4 months?

Dr Winston O Boogie jr 05-20-2015 07:06 PM

Cutting your lawn doesn't require any of the skill or training that giving a proper haircut does.

In addition, I only get my hair cut about 6-8 times a year.

DonH57 05-20-2015 07:26 PM

I cut our lawn till the warmer months and I hire someone. If I try to cut my own hair it will look like I took a weed wacker to it so I get it cut or grow dread locks.

Thanks for info. The girl on 301 by Oxford driving range that I went to moved last month and I need to find somewhere to go. Of course my style is what we in paper industry called selective cutting.

I shave my head.I naturally have a full head of hair but I find it more convenient not having any. This way I'm able to shower at night and not worry about how my hair looks.JMHO

kcrazorbackfan 05-20-2015 07:57 PM

I do both; shave my head as slick as a billiard ball and HAD the best looking lawn in our neighborhood in north KC; this yard in TV, however, is gonna take some work.

I don't cut it in the winter. A friend said he didn't and this year I didn't and it looked ok, zoshia.

I also have a full head of hair. I just haven't gotten up the nerve or bought the clippers to buzz it all over. All summer long I have hat head or helmet head.

Maybe I should get Big Al to buzz me and than decide.

My wife and I visited the Ok. City bombing Memorial 15 yrs. ago (she was there working for 9 mos. after the bombing) and it was HOT. After a couple of days, she asked if I would like to shave the head? It was starting to get pretty thin on top so I did it; I wore a cap all the time (prior to the shaving and still do) and the head was as white as the cabinets in our home. :22yikes: The head has been sans hair ever since. Try it, you'll like it.

Thanks for the clarification.

I am surprised that the lawn care company allows you to stop for 4 months and then resume when the grass needs weekly cutting. A thread a long time ago suggested that the monthly fee was based on averaging out the cost of the summer months when the lawns are mowed weekly and the winter months when they are mowed once every two weeks. It's none of my business what you do, I am just surprised that the lawn care service allows you to.

I just tell them not to cut it in the winter. I still pay in case I decide to have it cut.If I didn't pay I don't think my monthly payments would be as low. Besides why cut dormant grass?

patfla06 05-21-2015 08:20 AM

Notice NO women said they would cut their own hair! :a040:

rockaway 05-21-2015 08:21 AM

We have lived in our CYV for 9yrs and I have always mowed our small back yard.

My wife cuts my hair and her own hair. Mine is just a buzz cut, she cuts hers with a
Can mow and edge in 15min with my electric battery powered mower.
pair of scissors and 2 mirrors (I would go nuts trying to do that). Women stop her all the time and ask her where she got it cut.

Over the years we must have saved thousands

leftyf 05-21-2015 08:38 AM

I have used a Flowbee ever since they came out about 20-25 years ago. Works great and only takes about 10 minutes. Impossible to screw anything up. I just got tired of waiting to get my hair cut.

tomwed 05-21-2015 09:16 AM

Cutting my own hair makes quite a bit of sense. With the syles today---almost anything goes. My older son in college used to cut his friends hair and vica versa. Now that I'm older I wish the entire family would have hired someone to train us all in the art of hair cutting.

Let's face it, it's just hair. We're not learning how to be a sculpture or dentist.
