Farwell to Letterman: Top 10 reasons for liking him
 

1) I actually watched his show a few times many years ago and it wasn't half bad.

2) I saw his picture in the newspaper yesterday and after all these years on TV he still appears to be under 100 and well preserved.

3) He seems to have good teeth and doesn't need a walker yet.

4) Thanks to his show I was cured of my insomnia.

5) He revolutionized the weight loss industry as many Americans, after watching his show, either lost their appetites or couldn't hold any food down.

6) Having a highly infectious laugh, he did more to boost the fortunes of the medical industry than any other single factor.

7) He had stupid pet tricks.

8) When it came to having sleezy guests, no other talk-show host could hold a candle to him.

9) After the stupid pet tricks you could turn him off and go to bed because it didn't get any better than that.

Drum roll please for number 10:

10) There were a few times when he was almost funny and I remember smiling and thinking: Boy, that wasn't too bad!

I read in the paper today that his final show had his biggest ratings in 20+ years.

I like Jimmy Fallon and am looking forward to Stephen Colbert. But I still watch my dvd box set of Johnny Carson.

Farewell to Letterman
 

....but no one, as of yet, could match Johnny Carson. Oddly enough, it was said that he could make or break a career in show business. Nevertheless, I never enjoyed Letterman and liked Leno much better if I DVR'd a late show, but alas, we never came to The Villages to watch television and are dead to the world by 10pm for the most part.

I've always been a night owl and when Letterman was on NBC following Carson I probably watched every night. Jay Leno use to be a frequent guest and he was so funny I would keep a VCR tape on top devoted to Leno's appearance on Letterman. The funniest stuff was right off the cuff, he would pick up a TV Guide and flip through the listings and come up with some brilliant comments.

Later when Leno took over for Carson I couldn't stand his show. The network had totally corrupted him into a corporate type comedian. His unstructured suits were gone and his comedy was almost high school. I stuck with Letterman and I only watched Leno when he did the Monday newspaper headlines. That was really funny, but the rest of the time he is the worse interviewer on any talk show. That's where Letterman would really shine, he would disregard the notes and actually listen to the guest and ask follow-up questions that related to what they were saying. You could watch a celebrity in the morning on say, the Today Show, and watch them later on Letterman and it would be an entirely different take.

I thought the last five or so years of Carson got kind of stale. From around 1985 on I started watching other shows waiting for Letterman to come on at 12:30. I think Johnny knew it was time for him to go, 30 years is long enough. Now that Letterman is gone, I do catch Conan sometimes. He was much better on NBC from New York when following Leno. Now his show in Hollywood is not as good, I don't know why. I also like Jimmy Kimmel, especially his monologue is really funny, he has some great writers. Jimmy Fallon I didn't care for on SNL, he was on when they had some really good people, so it was hard to stand out when they had Will Ferrel and a few others. I guess it has carried over to is talk show, I really don't care for him.

Jay Leno became tiresome, especially later on. I liked him before he was taken off the air the first time.

Never liked letterman or the liberal network he worked for.

I assume you're not going to catch Stephen Colbert's opening show.

If you're going to decide what to watch based on how politically conservative the network is, you're just not going to watch television.

This brings us an interesting question. Sometimes it's difficult for me to separate an entertainer from his or her political views. I might like their talent, but if they are very outspoken about politics, every time I see them that's all I can think about.

Does anyone else have this problem. Do you ever not go to a movie because of that damn liberal or conservative actor is in it?

Not only do I hold their politics against them, I hold previous roles against them. I also hold their morals or lack thereof IMHO against them. I wish I didn't know so much. Guess I am judgmental.

Number 1 reason... HE IS GONE...!

I am not loyal to any party. I've voted for each when I like candidate. Never thought letterman was funny, cared for his political agenda, or his personal morals.

Errr....the drum roll is supposed to be before #1, not #10. Dave might not have been all that, but he knew a countdown from a countup.

What I'm asking is are there any artist that you like but have difficulty enjoying because of their political views. for example, I think that Alec Baldwin is a great actor, but every time I see him all I can think of is his political and personal life.

I'm a huge Beatles fan and have gone to see Paul McCartney live many times. I know that he's very liberal and a big Obama fan but for some reason it doesn't bother me and I don't think about it that much. Maybe it's because he's not as up front about it as some others are.

I know a lot of liberals that can't stand Ted Nugent. I hear them go as far as to say that he's a terrible guitar player.

It's difficult to be neutral with some people and simply enjoy their art.
