Re: Any ideas of how to get rid of Migraines

My Dr. wrote me a Rx for Imitrex and it works well for me. I don't get them often, but when I did, I had to lay down in the cold, dark with an ice bag and try to sleep it away.

Good luck. No OTC med worked as well as the Imitrex. The one OTC that even helped a little was Tylenol Severe Sinus.

Agreeing with blueeagle. However, I'd like to suggest you identify the triggers of your migraines..... what activity, event, food, or mood initiates the headache ? Once you know what these are.............. you have a better chance of prevention.

In my case, it was stress, going without eating, consuming food with msg, flashing lights, time of the month, ETC. Perhaps avoiding these elements might help thwart the onset of the headache.

Please seek medical attention. I tried everything for years and then found out I had a clotting disorder that caused the migraines. We can never be too careful.

I agree with CIB. MSG was one of my triggers and I inquire at every Asian restaurant if they use it or not. Another of mine is certain aromas - some colognes or perfumes can put me under as well as some household cleaning products. Good luck!

I could not take prescription medication for my migraines and still work as an air traffic controller, so my neurologist had me try two extra strength Excedrin and two motrin as soon as I felt a migraine coming on. It works great for me.

Good Luck.

If you haven't tried topamax, ask your doc about it.

My husband suffered for many years with migraines, and tried everything he could to get rid of them. Someone suggested he try a chiropractor, and he was willing to try anything at that point. (He was getting two or three headaches a day) After his first visit he was able to stop all the medications that the doctors had prescribed, and within a month he was headache free.

I suffered from occular migraines for several years. My dr. prescribed beta blockers (before Imitrex) and it worked wonders. Hope this helps.

Re: Any ideas of how to get rid of Migraines

I would lose almost four days a month because of Migraine before menopause. It was hormonally triggered. Imitrix IS the most wonderful drug. It stops the swelling of the blood vessels in the brain and doesn't just cover the pain. Anyone who has had a migraine knows how foggy you are in the midst of a migraine. It acts within one half hour and the migraine and the fogginess is gone. Imitrix completely changed my life. It is the single best improvement in medicine (to me) in the past twenty years.

I am entirely a traditional medicine advocate and not into homepathic at all.

Here in Cincinnati just recently, a man who owned a company that manufactured so called "healthy additives" was sent to jail along with several people who worked for him and family members too. He was the one that had the advertisement on television about "Why is Smiling Bob Smiling?"

In my opinion many (not all) of these homopathic remedies are dangerous and border on "quackery".

I'm a traditional medication advocate. If your male try Viagara, if your female give some to your husband. lol :joke:

Re: Any ideas of how to get rid of Migraines

I suffered from severe migraines for about 10 years.
Also hormonally triggered. Fumes was my next worse trigger.
Mine would occasionally go into seizures.
The only thing that worked for me was a big shot of Demerol.
None of the typical migraine drugs worked. Tried em all.
My neurologist put me on an aspirin a day therapy to thin the blood in my brain and allow it to circulate better. It did help.

Rarely have them now, but when I do feel one coming on,
Excedrin Migraine works.

migraines

My daughter has tried everything. The only med that works for her is a med called Maxalt or Magsalt. I dont know the spelling.

The triggers need to be avoided.

I still get a "pale" version of a migraine when I eat yogurt. Like an idiot I still try it every once in awhile. I noticed that Schuler said that her husband would get several migraines a day. Migraines last for more than 12 hours usually. For years I thought they were sinus headaches because of the swelling inside one nostril that would accompany them.

Migraine

I was getting migraines 3 or 4 times a month for the last 15 years. I had seen neurologist after neurologist. I came to the Villages and seen Dr. Cruz he prescribed Amatriptyline one a day to prevent migraines and I can say they have lessened by 75%. I was using Relpax for the migraines when I got them and now I can use the Walgreen Brand for migraine and it works great. I really think the daily pill of Amatriptyline does the job.:a040:

It has been a very long time since I have had a migraine. And when I had them, it was only a few times. But there was a pattern to them. I had always just been through some kind of stressful situation that had lasted awhile. I had always functioned well through the situation and managed to deal with it. But after the situation, whatever it was, had passed, I would get a migraine. It was weird. And somewhat predictable. And a shot of Demerol was always what it took. It was so long ago that those newer drugs may not have been on the market yet. But Demerol sure did it. But then I had to sleep the shot off. But after just a few times, the headaches just stopped happening. But I don't know why.

I am interested in what was said here about a chiropractor. I have wondered if migraines somehow originate in the neck. I once had this discussion with a physical therapist. They do neck stuff, too. I have always suspected the neck could be the culprit sometimes with migraines.

A migraine is hellish, indeed.

I too suffer from migrain headaches very badly. I take Imitrix but was just told to try Vitamin B2. I just started taking it so I can't say just yet if it works but I am willing to try anything.

shighsmi 10-05-2008 02:16 AM

Imitrex

Imitrex has been the only thing that has helped me. I can take exedrin for migraine if I catch it in time. shighsmi. They don't seem to be as bad now that I'm older. They were much worse as a younger man. shighsmi

My daughter would have those kinds of "release of stress" migraines. They are just as painful but different somehow from the traditional type of migraine. For one thing, they are far less frequent than the traditional type. I have learned that migraines are caused by swelling of the blood vessels in the brain, have complex triggers involving our endocrine system, have a genetic link, and are not at all related to skeletal or muscular structure. I don't think a chiropractor could help on a true migraine, but could probably help a lot on a stress related headaches.

Just my very humble, untrained, but very interested opinion.

Boomer 10-05-2008 08:42 AM

Those after-stress headaches were always just on one side. Is that typical of a migraine? They were awful. And I could not function. As I recall the doctor would give the shot of Demerol and then maybe some kind of sleeping pill. Probably that treatment has been replaced by now. This was in the early 80's. It worked. I sure hope the pattern never returns. I don't even have headaches much anymore, but I sure do remember those things.

I know someone who has auras that indicate a migraine is on the way. Sometimes if meds are taken at that point, the migraine can be prevented or may not be as bad. She sometimes takes the meds with a hit of caffeine, usually a Coke. I have heard that caffeine can be a headache trigger, but for her it makes the meds work faster or something.

I know someone else who has the aura only but not the headache.

Migraines remain such a mystery for so many.

I too suffer with Migraines..I take Butalbitol, no relief..I also think stress plays a big part in their onset..The Chiropractor helps a little, but I still am not able to get rid of it completely..:cus:

I went for a massage a week ago, and have not had a headache since..That is very unusual for me, since I get them frequently..

Some days I take eight pills, all differnt kinds, just to get some relief. By the end of the day, I am so tired, they knock me out..I find that pressure applied to both temples helps a lot..

There is also something similar to BenGay I use, it's called Tiger Balm..Very strong Chinese Balm..Rub it into the temples GENTLY!! You can buy it in any drug store..:(

graciegirl 10-05-2008 09:47 AM

Boom. Migraines are almost an obsession of mine because they truly impacted my life for many, many, years.

Many believe they have a sinus headache because the swelling also involves a nasal passage as well as only one side of the brain. Some people have a visual aura, flashing lights, tunnel vision etc. and some have a taste aura, and some have a smell aura. My daughter would have tunnel vision before these very infrequent "after stress" headaches. I remember driving like a maniac down I75 to Childrens Hospital one time after she had returned from a week at Girl Scout Camp. (stressful for her) because she was having tunnel vision. I thought she was having some brain related thing, a burst aneurism or a stroke.

Donna 10-05-2008 09:51 AM

Gracie..I went for a CT Scan, because I thought i was having a stroke, or had a brain tumor..
