The Villages, FL

I'm curious if anyone is making any mental or actual preparations for some rough weather that could potentially affect us early next week. I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet.

Anyone who was living in TV in 2004 that can tell us what that storm season was like? I believe The Villages got slightly beat up by one of the 2004 storms, but don't know if it was Charley, Jeanne or who. Any memories to share?

I've heard that The Villages , Florida has historically not been affected to much by
hurricanes. I got that from some local residents...not my sales agent from The Villages, Florida.

The Villages, Florida Fay may or may not impact our area. I have been here 29 years and have seen the wind and rain. You need to be prepared, water, batteries etc. If the storm comes up the west coast we will be on the Bad side of the storm and the area where tornadoes are formed. Yes it can happen here, so like good Boy Scouts, Be Prepared.

I'm watching it. Have moved lightweight stuff into house and garage for me and my clients. If they think the winds will be 60 mph or higher here, I'm moving as much as possible into garages for my snowbirds. Let's hope it the winds aren't too strong.

We are watching with interest from New Hampshire. I am glad we removed the lanai furniture before we left.

I'm really interested in the posts coming about hurricanes.
I have friends in Punta Gorda, for years they said to me " don't worry we haven't had a hurricane here for over forty years". The next summer hurricane Charlie's eye came over their house.
It's not enough to stop me from coming down But I'm paying attention.

I actually bought my lot a couple/three days after Frances came through in early September 2004. There wasn't much damage around. A few old trees fell (one severely damaged a house, if I recall corrcetly), many newly-planted ones were uprooted, but TV came through and put most of them back up, right away.

There were at least a half-dozen of the majestic live oaks damaged or destroyed in the grove of them at Stillwater Trail and Buena Vista Blvd (just southwest of Market Square). The area looked as though there'd been a small tornado there.

Eleven or so miles east of us, where my brother lives, there were many houses with a handful of shingles gone, and, it being an aviation complex, several windsocks were also blown away. They were without power for almost ten days, but it's a rural part of Marion County and not high on the priority for repair. So far as I know, only very small parts of TV lost any power, and that maybe for less than a day!

Subsequent storms were less noticeably severe. Our inland position should help us weather anything except the most ginormous of storms!

IMHO you just can't predict the weather based on past incidents of storms. I moved to Miami-Dade County in 1966 and hadn't experienced any hurricanes until August 23, 1992......... when Andrew came to visit. I survived and my 1926-built-historic home survived. But, I will never forget the aftermath and its impact on the area.

It doesn't hurt to BE PREPARED for the storm and BE PREPARED for the aftermath! Just in Case :agree:

CIB, I moved to South Florida in 1969 (Broward County), Andrew was South of us. My first and I hope last hurricane was Wilma in 2005, and that was just a Cat 1....hate to be in a big one if that was just a Cat 1.

Helene....... as I recall, the National Hurricane Center was located in my city (Coral Gables) and when Hurricane Andrew reached a Catagory 5.... the wind blew the radar thingie off the roof and it was reported afterwards, they thought the hurricane actually reached a Cat-6. Anyway, the worst of the storm was in Homestead, about 50 miles south of me.

My husband and I moved into our home in Springdale the day after Hurricane Charley. We'd owned the house for 18 months, but were just getting down for good. Anyway, the first month we were here there were 4 hurricanes. Jeanne was the worst only because it lasted 48 hours. Nothing being stuck in the house for 48 hours with a cranky old man. (Just kidding dear!) Other than that, the storms were not too bad. I've been through worse in Houston. Did make we wonder why we ever left Texas, though. Any damage that was done was cleared by TV within a day. We did hear about one house on the Sumter County side with a sinkhole after one of the storms. Of course we had to go look (being the ghouls that we are.) The whole driveway collapsed and the hole was about 5 feet deep. I guess it's because these houses are all built on sand. I would say that Fay is coming so get prepared, and good luck to everyone.

I was here during the 2004 season and all I remember is watching the news 24/7 for 2 or 3 days before during and after the each storm. While we suffered no damage other than a few tree limbs the rainfall totals were substantial. If I remember correctly we got 4 to 9 inches of rain on each storm. You will definitely find the low spots in your lawns.

Have the folks on the "historic side" in the manufactured homes ever needed to vacate and seek shelter elsewhere during any of the storms/hurricanes?

So the answer is YES ......... but is it 'cuz the homes aren't as strong as a CBS built home or up to the standard of today's built homes?.

We are leaving the coast in Southern Florida and going to TV. The forecast shows Fay coming right over us, so it is a good excuse to visit TV, and look at a few homes while there.

In the past, we have gone to Orlando and ended up being in some very strong rain storms, but no flooding.

A positive way to look at hurricanes and TV is....TV has been at it for 40 years beginning with the "Historic" area.....somehow they made it all these years and all those prior years hurricanes.

While today we are much more informed and as a result become better prepared.

On the negative side we are too much informed by the media as they venture beyond informing and move into brain washing-like repetitive reporting of every drop of rain and grain of sand blown. I guess it is how they sustain viewership, but it can and does frighten the uninitiated.

not where I live but in down town Wildwood there was a mandatory evacuation in 2004 for several mobile home parks. Most of the people did leave and go to shelters for as much as 4-5 days. This does not appear to be a strong storm but the problem is that we will be on the east side which is where tornadoes are formed. I worry more about tornadoes than the storm. Check with folks around Mallory Hills about tornadoes.

I live in Mallory and was here during the tornado Feb. 2, 2007 - Missed me by 8 houses.
A sight and experience I will never forget. I was truly blessed - only torn screens and debris.
I am sure there are some Mallory Square residents here on TOTV who are the true survivors of that storm.

The one and only good thing to say about hurricanes is you do have advanced warnings.

We own a property in Mallory and the damage there (in Mallory) was horrible. Our property escaped with some ripped screens, dented downspout, and flying shingle marks on the stucco. A power wash, new paint and a few odd jobs were all we had to do. Others were not so fortunate. We were in our other home here at the time. A neighbor called us at 7AM saying "Just want you to know that your house is OK" I blinked and answered carefully "Okaaaaay......is there a reason you are telling me this?" As the crow flies I am probably only a mile away from the Mallory house. In the case of this tornado, what a difference a block meant.

To those people living in the area where the tornado struck....... was there any difference in damage between the CBS homes and the frame/vinyl homes ?
