McCalls you gotta do better
Our second trip to McCalls in just two weeks resulted in identical issues that are difficult to understand. Last evening our party consisted of six people. The driver dropped five off at the door because it was raining. The restaurant was far from being crowded but the hostess (?) REFUSED TO SEAT US UNTIL THE DRIVER WAS IN THE ROOM WITH THE OTHER FIVE. Isn't this a bit of overkill ??? We clearly explained the driver was parking the car and would be joining us shortly. And as I said, this was the second time in two weeks this has occurred. In addition we were seated at two joined tables, one a normal table for four people and the other a tiny two person table. So there we sat, three people at a regular size table and three people at a miniature table incapable of holding three plates. The staff got a little huffy but did join two full size tables of the same height and size. We were very close to walking out.:loco:

They don't have to do better, you gave them a second chance
I would have said to the hostess, as I walked out-"good attitude, guess you'll be still working for minimum wage @ your next job" |
With the only fried baloney sandwich south of Pittsburgh, PA I guess they can get away with it!

I have begun to eat at home more and more with the very average food and average to poor service we have received lately in surrounding restaurants. Today instead of spending $60 -$70 or more at a restaurant, hubby went to Publix and bought crab legs for us. We will have sweet corn, baked potato, salad and 2 pounds of crab legs and drawn butter to share. Cost about $30.00.
Last week it was 2 filets, sweet corn, baked potato, salad and bread, total cost $20.00 all delicious and made at home. You can find out how to cook anything on Pinterest. We still do go out to socialize with friends but am enjoying the home cooking more and more. |

How do they survive?
Are some of these eating places trying to survive until the winter crowd moves back into the villages? I am continually amazed at the lack of service and the thought that the customer is paying the bill. If this happened as you said I would have a civil conversation with the manager. I would not be smart with anyone. If I felt I was not being listened to in a reasonable manner I would make an effort to write the owner/ceo a letter, not an email. I am a better cook at home than most of what I eat away from home and just like to go out and relax without getting the bloodpressure up.

We experienced the same situation with seating Thursday night. They were not that busy, plenty of tables. We arrived before our three friends and they would not seat us. The food is very mediocre, drinks poured very light and decor and atmosphere difficult to describe. This was our second time at this restaurant and there won't be a third. There are to many other options available.
I don't get why you would not seat part of a party of 5 or more till all are present. |
You have to remember the restaurants in The Villages dont care what you think. They couldnt care less. There is enough of us others will continue to come. We dont go much either just for all the above reason.

I don't believe McCall's is the only restaurant in the villages to not seat a table until all are present. All I know is they have damn good fried yard bird !

When the snow birds are back, no seats at all.

I never judge the quality of a restaurant around here by the crowds during snow bird season. My husband and our friends are venturing out of the bubble more frequently for decent food. I actually cook more here than I did back in NYC.

It's not an uncommon practice in high season when they're really crowded. However Warren said the restaurant was far from being crowded. In which case the policy makes no sense at all. |
I got a table for four at Cane Garden for breakfast this morning around 10:30, and I was the only one present. It was hoppin', too. The other three were five minutes behind me.

We are all different. If the usual group of folks we dine with were told that we couldn't be seated until the driver appeared, we would stand there and chat until he arrived.
I can't imagine getting worked up about it. How long could it take? |
In Spanish Springs most of the restaurants are mediocre, please name a superior restaurant in Spanish Springs & why its superior

We have given McCalls two tries and we won't go back. First time I had beef on weck, which I originally tried in Buffalo, NY ( best sandwich I'd ever had!) so when I heard the McCalls had it I had to try it. Certainly nothing special at McCalls. It came on a greasy roll with no salt on it. As I recall, the seasoning is the best part of the roll. I asked the server if there had been a mistake in the kitchen where they just put the beef on a regular roll and she said no that sometimes in shipping the salt comes off. Well maybe they could put more salt on before serving if they know this is a problem??
So another time we took friends there who had never been and they tried seating us at one of those micro tables. I told them that we would not be able to fit our dinners on the table and could we have a larger table. The server was clearly put out by our request but sat us at one anyhow. Then when ordering our meals, when my husband was ordering his meal the server asked "do you want a roll with that?" She paused and then said "It comes with it". So why ask? If it's part of the meal put it on the plate! Our friends weren't impressed with the food and neither were we. Too many other establishments to visit. Won't go back. |

This policy has been in place for a while now. There is a sign at the hostess station that says parties of 5 or more must have everyone present to be seated. Before that policy people would come in and say they had a party of maybe six or 8 and be seated without everyone present. So lets say that a table for 8 is taken by 4 or 5 and the others don't show up. That ties up a table that a group could have had. Just saying.
p.s. This has happened to us as well and we are long time customers who know the managers and bar tenders. It is what it is. |
McCall's is the best bowling alley restaurant I have ever been to. Blues night is a plus also.

I agree. |

After bowling Thursday afternoon many times we stop at McCalls for an early dinner. This is usually around 3pm. Our party of 4 or 5 usually straggles in and we seat ourselves and nobody seems to mind. They know us there so maybe that's why nothing is said. We enter from the bowling alley. In any case I just wanted to throw out some additional information.

Cane Garden is my favorite Country Club, but why is it in a thread on McCalls?
