WVLG 640am What do you think of it now
I feel after years of listening that the station music is not as good as it was and there are some bad sounding djs on the station recently
what do you think? I know a bunch of people who no longer listen |
I think what we are seeing with the shift toward a little bit newer music reflects the expanding population of The Villages. Obviously when the station first started, the "oldies" to the folks retiring then were much older. As the years go by, "oldies" get newer and newer as new generations of retired folks move here
They have to appeal to a much larger audience. So I'm not surprised by the broader mix of music these days. As far as the DJs go, I don't mind them. Miss hearing Rob Newton, but that's OK. |
Kathleen Kane has a smooth radio personality and Carol Wiltman always waves when we go past the station. In general I think "circletrack" has nailed it.
|
I stopped listening because most of the time is spent promoting The Villages and local businesses. Daytime has too much advertising and too little music to be worth my time. I listen to my favorite Columbus station on I Heart Radio or Sirius stations.
|
If you miss that kind of music try 99.7 FM out of Ocala. They have commercials but mainly just good music 24/7
|
I really like a hometown AM station. It reminds me of growing up in the country with our local stations. One of the many great things about TVs! I wouldn't change a thing they do.

I like it...but I wish there was FM sound quality; the same station, but better fidelity.
|
The music played has definitely changed. Hardly hear Bill Haley and the Comets anymore. I wish that it were also streamed . You could then tune it in anywhere ( I use Tunein Radio).

AM sucks especially in a golf cart. Don |
I find the station extremely boring. Nothing but bland computer generated music and endless commercials for houses in the Villages. For good local radio with a huge variety of oldies, try 790 AM out of Leesburg. They take listener requests and will play literally anything you can think of. They also have some unusual programming in the daytime. Only thing lacking is sound quality, but you can stream it. You can even find Rob Newton there.
|
I love the newer music and I miss Rob Newton. I love Rick Mitchell and his background knowledge of the musicians and songs that he plays. I am not enjoying the female DJ that follows him and find that her voice is a downer with no inflection, monotone.

Stream Pandora through your computer or TV.
|
I dislike the evolution of their playlist for that reason I now limit when i listen.
|
I think WVLG is good for those who prefer that format. In the golf cart I listen to Sirius radio and my i-pod at the neighborhood pool.

It's part of the total immersion village experience for would be buyers. I remember staying near Lake Sumter, riding the cart, the happy hour at the Squares, free movie pass, 2 free Champ course passes and staring at an unfolded map half the size of a picnic table and being rescued.
It's brilliant advertising and yet it's exactly what it's like to live here. I only listen when it's publicly broadcasted. |
I wish WVLG would add a FM translator. This would greatly increase the fidelity like other FM stations and probably appeal to younger residents who seldom listen to the AM band. It may increase their coverage area at night.
|
Turning back a dozen years ago when we first heard WVLG, the play list has continued to evolve with the demographics of TV. In the early 2000's I noticed a lot of Big Band type music then 50's & 60's Oldies followed by 70's and even some 80's. I still remember I was working on my computer and what did I hear but The Electric Prunes! Cool.... they had gone into the Psychedelic 60's :-) We can only hope they don't get to Rap or Hip Hop.
|
I would like an FM alternative, as the radios I typically use you set to the AM or FM band and then select the channel, you cannot mix AM and FM on the same bank of channels. It is a paint to change between AM and FM bands. I would probably listen more with the FM option.

This morning I threw on the headphones to listen to some tunes while on the treadmill. After about a half hour of inane chit-chat and commercials they finally got to a song.
I know they used to be better. No matter... I'm digging out the Ipod and loading it up. |

I hear a lot of songs I am not familiar with and then I turn off and that one poster is right its more for visitor and renters with all those house ads than it is for residents
|
