Movie Go'ers. "What's In YOUR Purse?"

I heard on the news tonight that at least one movie theater chain has announced they will search movie go'ers bags, and backpacks as a deterrent to those people intending to do harm with fire arms brought into the theater. It's common knowledge that some patrons "smuggle" refreshments in bags and backpacks. This raises the question "what's in YOUR pocketbook"

CFrance 08-19-2015 08:30 PM

They better not confiscate my stash of Werther's Sugar Free Coffee Caramel hard candies!

Boudicca 08-19-2015 08:37 PM

not to mention my "Butterfinger"..............

I haven't seen signs about no weapons allowed on premises at any of the movies I've attended. A shooter wouldn't adhere to that anyway. Many have a legal concealed carry permit. How would that be handled? Heck, if someone carried, I'd like them sitting next to me!
I don't think I'd go to that movie theater if they snooped through my stuff.

Justus 08-20-2015 06:04 AM

Ah, yes...brings back memories of Hurricane Katrina and the Superdome, 2005, when law-abiding citizens were stripped of their legal weapons. Thugs found a way to smuggle them in, as they always do, and brutally victimized the old and defenseless.

If this becomes general policy, many people will simply stop patronizing theaters and find other means of diversion...Netflix and microwave popcorn sound like a viable and more comfortable alternative; a lot less expensive, as well.

My thoughts, exactly.....

skip0358 08-20-2015 06:39 AM

That same Movie Company has also posted a NO CC PERMITTED WEAPONS sign. Was on the 11 o'clock news last night with a picture of the sign. So your correct only the crooks will find a way.

Chellybean 08-20-2015 07:13 AM

they have no legal right to search yourself or belongings, but can refuse to let you in.
More losing your constitutional rights because of criminals.

Yep!

Taltarzac725 08-20-2015 07:15 AM

That's the theater chain that owns the Aurora, CO theater that had the shooting a few years back.

I do not see a solution to this problem except more education about the causes of such violence through links at Sheriff's web-sites as well as those from our public libraries. These would be about mental illness and how to deal with it, survivors/victims rights and services, and homelessness. Get more National Alliance on Mental Illness members to speak at public high schools and colleges.

The retired cop that had a concealed weapon near Tampa who got angry after the theater patron through popcorn at him is an example of the problem of having hotheads who have access to guns.

I would feel very comfortable if I had a very calm and well trained law enforcement officer sitting in a theater with a concealed weapon but how are you going to know if he has just had a very bad fight with his wife or not and came to the theater to cool off?

leftyf 08-20-2015 07:17 AM

Just one more reason to not go to the movies.

Topspinmo 08-20-2015 07:23 AM

You don't and can't stop it. Crazies and terrorists are always going to prey on public places. The only way is to come close is have airport security everywhere. That's not going to happen just like boarder security any time in the next 20 years.

TVMayor 08-20-2015 07:36 AM

Boy Howdy, I remember the underwear bomber on the airplane. Right after that they ban wearing underwear on airplanes.

Without your permission, they have no legal right to do such a search.

I can tell you what's in my pocketbook... $14 less than before I paid for our tickets!!! :(

jnieman 08-20-2015 02:53 PM

I wonder if they are going to hire armed security guards to do such a search. I can't imagine one of the 80 year old men or 19 year old kids who take tickets searching your bag. What if they find a gun in there. Then what will they do?

$14? Last time I went was $9 a piece?
:BigApplause: that's why I don't go:mademyday: they priced themselves out of the market when I can wait 6 months and see it on cable. Except for "FURY" I had to have the full movie effect for that one!

In Florida, I don't think it matters if a business posts a "no firearms" sign. If you have a CCL, you can CC as long as the business doesn't know.

Warren - I think you may be incorrect. If a business posts that your entry to that business gives them permission to search packages, etc, it is my understanding that they may do so without your permission. Your entry results in assumed permission.

This is interesting and may apply here too. I would have to look at the Statutes mentioned for Florida's Parking Lot law for employees carrying guns in their motor vehicles. Statutes & Constitution :View Statutes : Online Sunshine

mixsonci 08-21-2015 01:49 AM

Do you really care if someone sees what's in your bag? Is it that special? Is it a matter of pride? I would rather have my rights violated than my life taken. They can look all they want and everyone else's also so I can watch the movie and not worry about who might go nuts and pull out a gun and start shooting.

Chatbrat 08-21-2015 05:20 AM

What's next, No backpacks in the squares, no guns in the squares--NO GUN ZONE signs, invite trouble- they don't protect anyone

Wow! While we're at it, let's do away with free speech because someone may say something that may incite another to kill someone. You do realize that many have risked/given their life to protect your rights?

I totally agree with Borjo! You should be trained and carry because you just never know when you will be the victim. Everyone thinks that will never happen to me. Guess what it can. We know first hand from our neighbor's experience several year ago. Rural area where everyone had several aceras. Around midnight we here what sounds like gun shots. Looking out the bedroom window we see flames coming from their house. It turned out some crazy person set fire to their house and as they ran out he was standing there shooting them! No one died that night but several sent extensive time in the hospital and recovery. They were defenceless because they did not think they needed a gun. You just never know and now a days things are even worse. :boom:

TVMayor 08-21-2015 07:36 AM

In my lifetime I have never known anyone to carry a gun in a bag. With on exception, when transporting the gun from the store or gun show to home at the time of purchase.

You probably did. You just didn't know they were CCing. Many women you would never suspect CC in their handbag/purse.

The term used was bag not bra.

"The blast two years ago killed three people and injured more than 250 runners and spectators. Yet the field of runners in 2014 was the second largest in the race's history, in part because it included those who had been unable to finish the race in 2012. Many runners entered in memory of the victims of the 2012 Newtown shootings and of the 2001 World Trade Center attack.

This year's field is expected to be 30,000 — larger than the population of New London.

Vigilance is still necessary, of course. Two women have been arrested in Brooklyn, N.Y., on charges of planning a "Boston Marathon-type terror attack." Yet the race goes on — this year's is the 119th Boston Marathon — in spirited defiance of fear and celebration of wide-open communities.

We salute, with gratitude, those in our neighboring state. That's Boston Strong."

Memories of horror, heroism at Boston Marathon are fresh. - Hartford Courant

Isn't the "spirited defiance of fear" going to the movies, amusement parks, airports, national monuments, ballgames and letting security check your purse or your person?

MarkinMd 08-21-2015 11:40 AM

It has been a while since I went to Disney World but I recall the security folks inspecting purses and backpacks. If you did not want them to check it you couldn't bring it in.

I think it is giving in to fear if you submit to unwarranted search in exchange for safety. The terrorists win.

dewilson58 08-21-2015 01:48 PM

I don't carry in a purse or a backpack.

hulahips 08-21-2015 02:01 PM

I would not go to a theater if they snooped. If you live in a state where concealed carry is permitted, they can't do a thing. It's perfectly legal and I too hope I'm sitting next to the cop or sharp shooter with all that is going on today. That being said, your likely to find some walnuts or pumpkin seeds in my snack stash

Bonny 08-21-2015 02:01 PM

The movie theaters won't be any different than the theme parks. They look in everyone's purse. Don't want them to look, no problem, you'll be shown the way back out.

hulahips 08-21-2015 02:14 PM

But what are they looking for?? I imagine if its concealed carry state where men carry on their side and women in purses, I see discrimination lawsuits

Same thing with baseball stadiums now, and at least one football stadium I know of is starting this fall.

I don't care if they look in my purse as long as they don't make as many mistakes as the TSA does.:(

I'm okay too unless they take away my candy bar I was going to eat in the movie theater. LOL :D

You don't know. Just like you don't know if the pilot on an airplane is going to deliberately crash the plane or not or if the Air Marshal on a plane is going to go bonkers or not or if that person next to you in the movie wants to up what was done in Aurora, CO. When it's your time, it's your time.
