Where do you store potatoes in a Florida climate?
I read a brown paper bag and not the frig in a cool dark place. I can't think of a cool dark space in my house. I buy 3- 5 lbs and leave them in the bag they came in.
I wonder if it's best to put them in the frig but the next time I go in the frig for milk or whatever, take them out. And do this throughout the day. I usually end up making potato soup so they don't go to waste. |
I believe the last spot for them is the frige. The coolness will turn the starch to sugars. I believe, if wrong someone correct me. I only buy what I need that week and put them in a wire basket for air circulation in the pantry.

I store my potatoes and onions in a terracotta pot in a dark closet. The pot absorbs any moisture and keeps the potatoes and onions fresher for weeks. I have done this for years and seldom have them go bad.

We store ours in a basket in our laundry room. We don't have any issues (except to use them up quickly enough) with this way of storage.

I have more problems with the onions than the potatoes. Publix onions seem to rot from the inside so they look OK until you cut them.

I have a wire basket I line with a cotton dish towel. I put my potatoes, onions and garlic in it and it lives in my pantry. Works great!

Mom and I store our potatoes, onions and garlic in a small, thicker packing box that we keep in a cooler, dry, dark area. They last for a long long time.
On a funny note-- My cousin's grandkids came to visit while she was digging up potatoes in her garden. The teenagers refused to eat the potatoes because they came out of the ground! What can I say, the teenagers lived in Detroit and didn't have a clue where the potatoes came from! |
I used to leave mine out but now I refrigerate them, yes, for weeks also. Absolutely no problem. Potatoes are fresher, no eyes growing and onions stay good also.

Is there anything better tasting that a potato fried, mashed or baked |
Potatoes and onions should never be stored together, nor should they be refrigerated.

The potatoes start growing eyes so I made 2 batches of scalloped potatoes and froze one. I'm going to try a couple of your ideas with the next bag and see what happens.
What kind of potatoes do you buy? and why? I buy what's on sale unless the recipe calls for something special. |

Store potatoes separate from onions and fruits. These give off ethylene gas that can cause potatoes to sprout prematurely. Exposure to light will buildup Solanine, causing potatoes to turn green. Never eat green part of potato, will cause illness. 50 degree is best for spuds. |

In the 60's while living in S. Florida we brought groceries home and just inside the door the bag broke. Several potatoes rolled under the sofa. We finished putting the groceries away and was ready to get the potatoes when the doorbell rang. It was the daughter of the neighbor across the street and asked if we had a potato they could borrow. Without hesitation my wife said "sure" and reached under the sofa and gave her a potato. She went home and told her mother the neighbors across the street keep their potatoes under the sofa.

I keep mine in the refrigerator and have for years. Onions too.
I will put them both in the same ref. drawer, and put fruit and other veggies in the other drawer. We have noticed no problems whatsoever. |
