Moving Back to Ohio, need advice.

We will be relocating from The Villages to Cleveland Ohio this spring,
we want to purchase a home there. The dilemma is that all our equity is in our home in the villages, so we need to sell this home then find a place in the Cleveland area.
I think our only option is to have our furniture moved and stored in the Cleveland area until we find a home. Rent a short term furnished home or apartment, and then find a home.

I don’t have the money to buy a home in Cleveland before we sell here. I can pay cash after this home sells.

Are there options that I am not aware of?

Thank you in advance.

You might've able to get a bridge loan from a bank if you have good credit.

Villageswimmer 09-07-2015 09:08 AM

From your signature line, it looks like you are military or retired military. Have you contacted VA and explained your situation? I think VA extends loans without a down payment.

We got a bridge loan from Third Federal in Lakewood, Ohio when we bought the house here before we sold in Cleveland. I think we figured that the bridge loan cost us $70. Third Federal's rates were the best at the time. Don't know about now.

KathieI 09-07-2015 09:29 AM

I agree, I would look for a bridge loan. Good luck.

Oh, and another piece of advice, do not list your village home with Villages Sales, it will take forever (my personal recent experience.) After a year, I listed with MLS Realty Execs and sold it in a month.

graciegirl 09-07-2015 10:40 AM

If your home is clean and well presented, and priced competitively, you should have no problem selling it yourself.

If I were you I would find a temporary rental in Cleveland/store your furniture and then look for a home.

Good luck.

NotGolfer 09-07-2015 11:37 AM

thought I "JUST" read a thread where you were questioning about affordability in moving from T.V. down near Siesta Key. Am I wrong or was I just thinking that???

toma6000 09-07-2015 11:45 AM

I have a 3 bedroom 2 bath home in Middleburg Hts. Ohio. I will be putting it on the market next spring. Send me a private message with a phone number so we can talk. Maybe we can both save the commission expense.

If you use a POD they store your POD until you are ready. They stored ours for several weeks. They don't empty it they just put the POD in a warehouse until you are ready for it. You can also put a contract on a new home that is a contingency on yours closing. Do a pre-approval ahead of time also. You can get a pre-approval letter from Quicken Loans and apply over the phone documents can be uploaded on line and the pre-approval letter is good for several months.

Can you share with us, why you are moving after one year? Thank you anyway if you do not and I hope everything works out for you.

I think a furnished house sells faster so it may be prudent not to rush shipping furniture north quickly especially if it is just going into storage. Stage the home leaving it looking spacious and uncluttered and out extras that won't be damaged in the garage or attic. Experienced realtors may help you better with this and give ideas.

Chagrin Falls a sub of Cleveland. Very nice area. Stay at Chagrin Inn while searching for a home.

In a nutshell.
We looked at many ares outside of TV. My wife misses the layout of the home we had in Ohio. The homes here in Florida have an open concept and it doesn't feel as homey as the the homes up North. We also miss the seasons and familiarity.
The homes near the beaches are not laid out to our liking and the insurance is expensive, then there are the hurricanes.
We have to drive very far to do the things we like, shopping, Trader Joe's, etc.
So we have decided to move back to the area we have been familiar with for our entire lives, plus we don't golf.

TV is beautiful and is great for 98% of people, but we are in the 2%.
I will miss the friendly people and the beautiful weather in the wintertime.

I would like to give you the names of some folks that would be happier up north. If you have room, maybe they could hitch a ride with you. They might be willing to share the cost of a moving van. Win Win Win

Good morning and best wishes on your decision.

When I saw your post, I just had to stop in here and share a little something with you that I think you might like.

You could be too young to remember Doris Day. She was from Ohio, too. My place. Cincinnati.

As soon as I saw what you were saying, one of Doris Day's songs popped into my head. -- I have a bit of a quirk. I think in song lyrics sometimes. Most of the time the songs are really old. Songs I must have heard from my playpen. I don't know why I do this, but it is a quirk I long ago figured I might as well embrace. If only, if only "Name That Tune" were still on television. Oh well, I digress, another quirk........ so anyway........

Here is a link for you to Doris Day singing Why Oh Why Oh Why Oh Did I Ever Leave Ohio? -- I can pretty much guarantee that if you listen to this a couple of times, it will play sweetly in your head all day and you might even take a little twirl around the lanai with your wife as you think about your new plan.

In the title of your thread you said "need advise". I live in Ohio and my advise to you is don't move back. Especially Cleveland….insert any Cleveland joke you like here. On a serious note you really should consider the weather. The winters can be pretty terrible up there. The lake effect makes it just that much worse.

tcxr750 09-08-2015 12:10 PM

If you look at the westerly suburbs including North Ridgeville, Avon and Avon Lake you will find lots of new affordable construction. Pioneer Ridge by Del Webb is in N. Ridgeville. It's a seniors only community. The western suburbs have lots of new construction off of I90.
Downtown Cleveland is in a renaissance in preparation for the RNC. Many younger people are living downtown. Culturally Cleveland has numerous highly rated nationally recognized hospitals. The Art Museum and Symphony is world class.
I can also speak of eastern suburbs if you have an interest. Easterly Cleveland is also in the snow belt.

virgind 09-09-2015 06:28 PM

I see you are from Amherst Ohio.I am from Amherst Ohio why do you want to move back to Amherst if in fact that is where you are planning to move to.

virgind 09-09-2015 06:31 PM

Ah Cleveland . The mistake on the lake.

Ah come on CFrance. It is a long running Ohio joke. And a rivalry between the three C's.

CFrance 09-09-2015 08:38 PM

I think it's rude and mean-spirited. Not to mention trite. And anyone who's been to Cleveland in the last fifteen years knows it's not even true.

Why blast someone else's hometown? You don't like it when people blast TV...

BS Beef 09-09-2015 09:44 PM

Oh I beg to differ with you on Graciegirl taking offense to people teasing about TV. As I recall she got a hoot out of someone posting this video.

I have lived in five states, some of them at each end of the state, and many cities and I feel qualified to say that the suburbs in Cleveland are the nicest of any place I, we, have ever lived. We lived 34 years on the west side......the side that doesn't get as much snow. 27 of those years were spent in Bay Village and 6 of those years in Avon. When we moved to Cleveland I wondered why people joked about it being "the mistake on the lake" or has "a lake that's Erie" or a "river that burns". The river did burn but the other 2 were just a way to get laughs. We loved it and are not sorry that we lived there. There is nothing like a long warm fall on the shores of Lake Erie with flowers all the way to Thanksgiving. I know when someone calls it "the mistake on the lake" that they either have never been there or have only been there a day. I would go back if I could come here in January, Feb, March.

CFrance 09-10-2015 07:09 AM

My friend lives in Cleveland, just across the river in a city neighborhood. They have so many parks, cafes, markets, etc., within walking distance, and lovely old trees and city sidewalks. It's lovely.

But you do understand, even with all that, that most people who live in Cleveland are savin' up so they can move to Cincinnati? ;)

That's funny, I've never heard the term mistake on the lake. I lived in Dayton, Ohio for over 20 years. I also never knew there was a rivalry between Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland. I do know there is or used to be a club you can join here called the Three C's so those people must have buried the hatchet.

It is a FRIENDLY rivalry because of course they are all from Ohio who rival Minnesota people for being NICE.

People from Cleveland are from the MOTHERLAND too.

And the Cleveland Clinic. I know 3 people who have gone there for 3 different reasons and all 3 are glad they did.

......A coincidence......Just now, as I began typing this post, CBS This Morning...... which I always have on because I have a thing for Charlie Rose -- on vacation I guess this week (sigh).....So anyway, they just had a short segment about Cedar Point's new roller coaster, the Valravn. -- Of course, I had to look up that name. Found out it is the name of a supernatural raven from Danish folklore. -- This looks like one scary roller coaster.

Cedar Point is in Sandusky, about an hour from Cleveland. There are people who make pilgrimages to Cedar Point to ride the roller coasters there. And now, Cedar Point will have a new record-breaker. Speed and Flips and Drops. Oh my! -- I will not be riding it because for me the roller coaster would be named "Circles of Hell." But I thought maybe brave people out there might like to know about the Valravn so here is the link.

Cedar Point announces record-breaking new coaster, Valravn

The other side of the story:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOABueEaiaA

graciegirl 09-10-2015 10:59 AM

The Cleveland Clinic is the number one heart hospital in the United States and has been for years. Helene was diagnosed there but had to wait until she was 16 for surgery because that was the dawn of congenital heart surgeries. That was only fifty years ago. There were more than 12 diagnosing doctors and each was warm and kind and VERY competent.

Some things you are glad to look back ON.

Thirty four years in the Cleveland area and I have never heard of a rivalry between Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland. They are all so different and each with its own weather.

How about this; "a cheerful banter."

OpusX1 09-10-2015 12:10 PM

Heck, everyone from Ohio knows Cincinnati isn't in Ohio it's really a part of Kentucky. Even the airport is in Kentucky.

The important thing to remember is this.

Friends don't let friends cheer for Michigan.

CFrance 09-10-2015 07:19 PM

Going back to "the mistake on the lake" comment... I believe a friendly rivalry is conducted by pointing up how one's own city is good; not by tearing someone else's down.

As we once advised a security company poster who was bashing every other security company... tell us why yours is good, not why theirs is bad.
