Century Link Internet Service
 

I'm considering changing from Comcast to Century Link for my internet service. I have 25Mbps with Comcast and can get 25Mbps with Century Link for considerably less cost.

Anybody have experience with Century Link at the 25Mbps speed?

By the way, I would appreciate it if you could fight the urge to turn this into a Comcast bashing thread. :D I know their customer service is not loved by all, but I've been satisfied with the internet service for a couple years. No major complaints...just looking to save a few bucks. I'll probably even call them and see if they can do something like a price-match for a while. If they could, I'd stay with them.

But right now I'm just looking for opinions on Century Link (25Mbps).

I have CenturyLink via fiber optic to the house. I have faster nominal performance (40 Megabits/sec download and 20 Megabits/sec upload). With fiber, they give you an IP address at the wall as the electronics are in the ONT on the outside of your house. Buy your own router or lease theirs. It is very reliable. Higher speeds are available (100 Megabit/sec and 1000 Megabit/sec) but 40/20 is already overkill - it was part of a deal.

Called Comcast recently and asked them to do a price match because I was thinking of going to Century Link. I quoted the prices from Century Link I found on the website for new subscribers. They took my bill down quite a bit. When you call ask for the retention department. They gave me the new rate for a year and said call back in a year to keep the rate for another year. I am also very happy with Comcast internet.

I've had Century Link since July 2011. We have fiber Optic and no modem, I just plug my computer or router directly into the wall jack. I only have 10 mbps speed and when I test it, it always comes in very close to 10 or higher in speed. The only outage I ever had was about a month ago. I called and tech came that same day. He said lightning had struck near the garage (which it had) and had it had taken out the backup battery in the garage. In case of a hurricane or any kind of outage they installed a backup battery. It apparently continued to work for a couple of days until it finally gave out. He put in a new battery and it was fine. We also have long distance phone with call block and caller ID, the two together (phone & internet) costs us $59.99 a month plus tax, it's the same price since day one.

Same...no issues! I am actually connected right to the wall, bypassing the router.

Typically they run cat5 from the ONT, at least in my house. Coax is not used anywhere.

Strange that I have coax. I have Prism TV which may be the difference, similar to FIOS TV that I have in NY that is also coax from the ONT to the router.

We have CenturyLink and have no problems, I test the speed periodically and its what they say it should be 40 Meg.

That's the same pkg that we have and they are charging us $59.90 for the internet and $11.34 for the phone plus taxes. Guess I have to give them a call.

I pay less than $50/month for 40 megabits/sec download and 20 megabits/sec upload internet only including all taxes, fees, and router rental. I use a VoIP phone for $3.50/month.

I believe those Cisco settop boxes used for Prism TV support both coax and cat5. It may have been easier to use coax than the cat5 in your walls.
