D.U.I. In the Villages

Dui's in the village. Are there more because of the vacation/fun aspect of living in the Villages? Seems that the ones caught and listed in that other News thing are almost always multiple dui violators. I really feel sorry for these people when I see an older person, retired with so much to live for doing this. The dangers to others and themselves. Is there a bigger alcohol problem than we actually see? What do you think?

MikeV 09-17-2015 10:24 AM

What makes you think there are more DUI's in TV than any other town of the same size?

Are they saying all of these are Villagers or they were caught in the Villages?

I didn't mean to say more I am asking if you thought there was and how do you feel about it. They usually do mention the village the person lives in. I realize as we age a lot of people continue with the same problems.

dewilson58 09-17-2015 11:15 AM

I remember my first Life Style visit (+10 years ago). I have to confess, it was a vacation / fun atmosphere for us and we probably drove the golf cart when we shouldn't have done so. I think it's easy for first-timers and newbies to forget safety. This place is just too much fun!!! Older and wiser now.

tomwed 09-17-2015 12:13 PM

I don't think there is.

I think villagers are more likely to problem drink at their old home, where they came from. Unless they came from a place with so much to do, so many friends your own age and so many nice days to go outside.

It's funny. Down here once in a blue moon I see a cooler with beer on the golf course. Back home it was quite common.

outlaw 09-17-2015 12:22 PM

I think there is definitely alcohol abuse among older people. I know so many older people that drink way too much. I'm not saying they are drinking and driving, but they are drinking everyday three and four drinks per day. Some much more than that. I think a lot of it is loneliness for a widow or widower. Much of it is a gradual build up of tolerance, and addiction.

redwitch 09-17-2015 01:18 PM

Considering the amount of AA meetings in TV, I'd be surprised if things were any different. Some won't drink at all, some will drink moderately, some will drink responsibly, some will drink too much and some are alcoholics but won't admit it. Let's face it, a lot of activities revolve around a cocktail or two. Plus, I think the LEOs here are well aware of the ones who imbibe too much on a regular basis and are on the lookout for them. So, that will lead to more repeat offenders.

I think Tom is right. "Back home", I think drinking probably was more solitary, and done at home.
In TV, there are Happy Hours and two-for-one drinks in most of the Country Clubs, restaurants and at the Town Squares.
It's a very social atmosphere. Maybe not more drinking than "back home", but more obvious.

rubicon 09-17-2015 02:12 PM

Its the village seniors who get arrested for drug use that caught me off guard. Never used any kind of illegal drugs, never drank much in fact right ow i feel a bit of guilt taking an aspirin...that last part was a joke

Blue Moon happens to be one of my favorite beers!

I had a chance to see Connie Smith in person. She had a great voice. I also met George Jones a couple of times when I lived in TN not far from where he lived. He was a great talent who fell prey to alcohol.

Like Golfing Eagle's wife, I go in a crate. Fireboy and the dogs sit in front.
At night when we stop at LaQuinta, he lets me out of the crate. Then I get walked and fed.

You are absolutely the bestest spouse ever!!! :jester:

By the way, when will you be making the crossing into the fountain of youth land?

Our 182 days as illegal aliens start Nov 1 and end next April 28, 2016.
I'm still trying to get over the ticket price of travel insurance for six months.
The older we get, the more expensive it is. And we're both healthy!

I don't usually go to Crispers monthly TOTV get-together, but I'll go in Nov if you do!

P.S. I'm so sorry, I just realized this thread is now wildly off track.
Let's get back to the serious business of drinking. :beer3:

jpvillager 09-18-2015 08:54 AM

Have been wondering if it appears like a bigger problem because it gets more attention in the press? Maybe crime also?

When is the Nov. Chrispers event?

In keeping with the intent of this Thread, it has been suggested from time to time that we hold the Crispers event somewhere licensed so people can order a drink. At 3 PM? Well, it's always 5 o'clock somewhere.
All TOTV get-togethers are held the third Friday of the month at 3 PM at Crispers in Southern Trace Plaza. I think there is one today. So that would make it November 20. See you there?

By the way, I mispoke, the US Government refers to Canadians as aliens, but NOT illegal aliens. My bad.

Chellybean 09-18-2015 11:11 AM

someone from Law enforcement told me that there is 33 % of the public that is drunk before 11:00 am.
I said yikes is that really true!
There is over a 100,000 people living in the villages, that would be 33,000 people.
He then said ok would it make you feel better if i said 15%, 15,000 people YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I missed meeting this nice fellow the last time he went to Crispers. I will be there too to welcome home Bare. I will practice my hugging.

he obviously was drunk at the time and making a poor attempt to justify his drinking! the actual published guesstimate is 0.7% or 700 out of 100,000 and that number is averaged for any time of day so tell your 'law enforcement' friend to sober up!

So let me propose a new business model: The country clubs should change their happy hour from 11AM-7PM to 4AM-11AM

I have a very hard time believing that.

Bonny 09-18-2015 11:54 AM

Years ago I couldn't believe there were actually cars at some of our bars 8:00 am near where I lived.
Then I started working the midnight shift getting out of work at 7:00 am. Sometimes a group of us would go out to the bar after work. I was now one of those cars in the bar parking lot at 8:00 am. :icon_wink:

I thought your face looked familiar. I use to hang out in a bar in Troy, Hazel Park, Harbor Beach, Grand Rapids, Michigan at 8 am.
