Windows 10 Upgrade - be aware
This happened to me - after many wasted hours on tech support, I was finally able to go back to Windows 7. Be aware and back up all your files before upgrading.
Windows 10 Upgrade Problems: Black Screen After Updating (New) Some users taking advantage of the Windows 10 Upgrade are finding that after the upgrade has finished their device just gives them a black screen and won’t start. Microsoft is still working on a fix for this, but there isn’t a way to avoid it right now. Worse, it seems that the issue is happening on multiple PC configurations. For now, we can only suggest using the back up utilities that came with your device and creating some external media back up before you start the upgrade in case this happens. If this happens and you live near a Microsoft Store, make an appointment with them to have your device looked at if you run into the issue. Some, reports, (like those from our comments) indicate that deactivating virus programs before performing the upgrade prevents this issue. |
I have been using Carbonite for back up for a couple years. What a great service. Upgraded to 10 and (knock on wood) no issues except for some driver updates that needed to be installed.

I had a black-screen issue upgrading a laptop to Windows 10. This particular laptop had a discrete NVIDIA graphics chipset built in. I finally discovered that uninstalling the display adapter from the Windows device manager prior to initiating the upgrade (and checking the "delete the drivers for this device" checkbox that popped up during the uninstall) solved the problem. This causes Windows to use a generic set of video drivers for your screen that behave better during the upgrade process. Once Windows 10 is safely installed you can re-install the drivers for your specific chipset (although i n my case I did not have to do that as Windows 10 figured it out on its own and did the right thing).

My update to W10 from W7 on my laptop went smooth so not all will go bad. I do like w10. Sorry for your issues.

Our laptop became very slow following the installation of Windows 10 vs the Windows 8 that was originally installed. Have not figured out why or what to do as yet.

BTW: My last update was installed a 8:29 PM last night. If I had not told W10 to let me do the reboot, my understanding is that the PC would have rebooted on it own when the PC was idle (whatever that means). What You Need to Know About Windows Update on Windows 10 Z |
We went back to 7, didn't like win 10 at all.

If your computer slows down you could look at task manager and see what's running and I think downloading. Running windows can be a part time job. That's why I push chromebooks on people that just want the damn thing to work. How to Use the New Task Manager in Windows 8 or 10 |
I really liked Windows 10 on my laptop but it slowed me down noticeably. I kept trying other things to speed it up and nothing worked. I finally gave up and went back to Windows 7 and the speed returned. I may try it again some time in the future, but for now 7 will be just fine.

I continue to get a p/u for "Microsoft 11" Is it safe to install?
|
My laptop is ancient dell with max of 4 megs ram. Runs slow even before 10 was installed. Used very little and just may go to a chromebook. I like the 17 inch screen I have and that is what is holding me back at the moment.

Seconded. If everything you do with a computer can be done in a web browser, then a ChromeBook is a great choice. -- bc |

11 is the latest version of their browser [IE11]. 10 is the latest version of their operating system [Windows 10]. I use the Chrome browser made by Google so I don't know if IE11 is buggy. I would guess not. |
restored back to windows 8 after 30 days.
Today I was into my laptop with windows 10 on it and found out that you cannot turn off auto download for updates. Went to the Microsoft site and read the same thing. I decided to take 10 off even though I was well past 30 days. I went and hit the restore feature and it put my laptop back into windows 8 with no problems. Only thing I had to do was put my wifi password in to connect again to the internet. I believe I was at week 6 or 7.

If you have 7 and haven't upgraded to 10 yet, here's a compatibility tool from MS to check your hardware and software b4 upgrading.

I've upgraded 3 laptops as soon as I was notified. No problems then or now. |
The only reason that Microsoft has offered free upgrades from Windows 7/8 to 10 (for a limited time only) is so that they have a lot of people finding the errors and glitches for them.
It's a shame that their much-touted "easy to revert to your old version" isn't always quite so easy, once any damage has been done. |
Can I suggest if you have to call Microsoft and you get a tech that you like (and can understand), that you make friends with them and ask if you can contact them should you have more issues. One thing I hate is when you have major issues and have to call in 10 times and you get 10 different reps. You have to tell your story from the beginning and alot of them will want you to do the same steps you have already tried 9 times before. If you stick with the same guy or girl, they will have an idea what they have already tried. I did this and have a great friend in India now.

Thought maybe I should update my laptop since it hadn't been turned on since August. There were a bunch of updates and took close to 2 hours to download and install. No issues with win 10 and everything went well. I guess I should do it more often :)

In India they speak english they just don't understand it. If its not on the flip chart they don't have an answer. IMO.

:blahblahblah:After upgrading to Win10, I was not happy with it so I uninstalled Win10 back to Win7. Since that time ALL my office file were marked "read only" which I did set up a work around so they are usable. Also my laptop operates so slowly it is like back in the early 70s type computers.
I am seriously think about switching to a MacBook pro so as not having to deal with Microsoft ever again.:ohdear: |

Why do most people experience no issues with Win 10 and others don't? Hardware issues, capacity issues, operator issues, compatibility issues or something else?
|
Why do people have to have the latest windows OS? Are you not happy with Win7? Quit chasing the latest OS unless there is some new capability that you just have to have.

There are some things about W10 I do not like but I am hoping that with all of the Feedback, MS will make some changes to fix these things or a third party vendor will come out with some free code to make it work better. Z |

Although MS claims that 10 does not have any increased hardware requirements versus previous versions (i.e. that it takes less disk space, runs in less memory, doesn't use the CPU significantly more and, with DirectX 12, can run games and other 3D graphical software significantly faster as long as its been updated to support the new release). By and large I have found those claims to be reasonably accurate, at least for the 3 desktops and 2 laptops I have upgraded (all of which were admittedly quite capable machines in terms of memory, CPU and disk space, so that may not be indicative of the results you'd get with not-so-well-endowed machines). -- bc |
