Barn Hunt

Anybody take their doggies to barn hunts? There is one in Morriston (link below), another in Williston, and a couple others within an hour or so of TV.

G2 Barn Hunt

Just wondering. Considering trying one out just for fun.

No. No. No!! Neither actually. The dogs 'hunt' real, live rats. But the rats are in an enclosure...a tube sort of thingie. The enclosure is then hidden away, possibly under a hay bale or something like that.

The rats are not harmed in any way!!

PB, I didn't think you'd be engaging in hunting live rats with your dog!
I hope they give the rats Valium before the hunt, so they know it's all in fun. Kidding!!
I guess the rats are used to it by now.

Wow. Paintball for dogs.

By the way, I haven't seen a barn hunt yet. Just sounds like it could be fun. If there is any sign of cruelty to the rats (which I doubt from my research so far), I will not be participating. And I'll let you know...although we're far from certain we're even going to try it.

I think I have the wrong kind of dogs for this.

I think the "instinct" class (I think that's what they call it) is basically a beginner (zero experience) class.

CFrance 10-04-2015 02:51 PM

Introductory event is $40, which gives you the rules and your dog the chance to "meet" a rat to see how strong his prey drive is. I think it's a little high for a fun time for your dog. This is a formal sport, and the owner gives training classes and runs meets that are judged.

She also raises the rats. I wonder if there is a particular kind that is not afraid of being routed out by a dog, even if it's enclosed in something.

Polar Bear 10-04-2015 03:11 PM

Agree the price is a bit high. I've considered just going to spectate an event.

Bonny 10-04-2015 07:55 PM

Sounds really weird to me.

Patty55 10-04-2015 08:29 PM

It sounds like horseless fox hunting.

CFrance 10-04-2015 08:36 PM

If you go to the site and click on The Rats and Rattery, it shows the rats. It looks like they are quite well cared for and live in a kind of cat condo-type structure. They are all named. It's very strange to me, but I doubt there's any cruelty to them going on.

I couldn't resist, I just went to the website and viewed the Rattery.
They even have a Rat Condo. Better than living in The Villages for sure!

Yes we are taking our jack Russell for the first time end of October. Sounds interesting if nothing else...
