When did you realize you were affluent?
 

In 1976 my wife and I bought a brand new Toyota Corolla with our wedding money. It came with a radio and a heater.

In 1969 I had a two bedroom apt. and paid $90.00 per month . Utilities averaged $30 per month. My salary was $650. per month. I was affluent.

The first time we could afford to buy a roll of 100 postage stamps like my husband's parents always had on hand, I felt we had become affluent.

After graduating from college....married with 3 kids.....getting an offer from GE to join their prestigious Manufacturing Training Program....salary $7200 PER YEAR......$600 per month!

Three kids and going to college. What drive and determination you had [have?].

I remember standing on line with my 3 kids and wife waiting on line in Disney world to see The Little Mermaid knowing that when the school year started I was the new media specialist in charge of all things non-print. I was daydreaming about all the new ideas I would introduce to the high school inspired by Disney. I even carried a notepad. That was the best moment of my life. I think about it from time to time.

When I went to the grocery and felt I didn't have to use a list. That was years after earning $33 a week on my first job. Before Taxes.

When I found I could pay to send my children to high quality private schools and colleges.

Probably anytime after I left my first job that paid $1.25/hour

Like some I married worked days and went to college nights. My first job paid $100 per week with a net of $80. Those beginning days were the best days of our lives all because of the promise of a wonderful future.

As to being affluent it was our belief that it wasn't only in how much you earned but more importantly how you managed it...utility for the dollar is critical.

When I graduated college and was hired by IBM making I think $6500 a year with good benefits. I thought I had made it and set a goal that if I could reach 10K a year I would be affluent. It took me less then 3 years.

I always had good jobs making good money before that as I got my master electrician license right out of high school and even had my own business during college. The difference was I now had a career and knew I could go places once I was working for a large company.

When my parents bought me a pair of jeans that I didn't have to roll the pants legs up. I knew we were blessed from then on.

I know what you mean. All me and my sybs labels said IRREG. We thought it was a brand.

And was there a first floor to a department store? We were always shopping in the basement when I was growing up.

When I bought my first pinstriped suit and wing tip shoes. Then two weeks later my first paycheck from IBM.

As I sit in my office at Sumter Landing, and watch all the little people buying homes I am building and selling.

No, it was Kaufmann's, Gimbel's, or Horne's in downtown Pittsburgh. And we took the bus to get there. Or else we drove to East Hills Shopping Center, long ago closed and taken over by gangs.

When it didn't matter if something was on sale.

I just thought of it---it was the day I realized that my credit limit on cards and lines at the bank was more than my net worth:1rotfl:

I know this is going to sound corny BUT I was the poorest and richest when I married the "ole boy".....A good good guy!

I got a $5700.00 tax free re-enlistment bonus in Vietnam in 1968 and have pretty much lived in high cotton ever since.

When I realized that if I lied on my tax return I would get a refund.

The first time when we got an indoor toilet ;). The second time was when we got a big window fan to draw air through the house :laugh::laugh:. And the final time was when we got a window unit air conditioner. :a040: Everything since then has been icing on the cake. :pepper2:

When I was 21 I bought a new 1971 Plymonth Duster for $2,100 CASH!

It went down hill from there.
