Urban Coyotes

I know that my awareness has been raised. This appears to be a widespread problem. Kitty...what do you think is the answer? |
Shoot em

Why what did they ever do to you?

Being sort of a moderate person and a card carrying carnivore, I don't oppose when wild animals get out of control having to eliminate them, such as the bears in Volusia County. Yes they did live there and now people live there. Very much love domestic pets and feel that our lives are better for them. But I do eat meat and feel my species is programmed to do that. Mark me down as a hunter gatherer. (At Publix and Winn-Dixie) |
I can't wait for the day when there isnt a coyote story.

Assuming a coyote does not get caught by an alligator are they at the top of the 4 legged food chain in The Villages?
Do they have any natural predators where we live? |

If there is a bobcat and/or coyote in a separate neighborhood doing damage to local pets, then if it can be identified as the killer of these pets, I do think it should be killed in as humane way as possible. I would be against just eradicating the coyotes in the Villages. |

She's a Gunther. I'm a Gunther. Wouldn't you want to be a Gunther to? Than we all share a pot of Hungarian Goulash made with imported goulashes. |
What attracts coyotes to your neighborhood?
Coyotes are attracted to neighborhoods due to the availability of garbage, pet food and even pets, which coyotes see as prey. The following list illustrates some of the attractants that draw coyotes close to people. Remove these attractants to discourage coyotes from visiting your property: ■ Outdoor pet food or water ■ Birdseed or food sources that attract small mammals ■Accessible garbage or compost ■ Fallen fruit or berries from trees or shrubs ■ Shrubs, woodpiles, decks or any other structure that can provide cover or be used as a den this was from kitty's link Everything I've read says don't put your trash out the night before. People do that all the time down here yet bags are not being torn up like crazy like the raccoons would do where I lived. So either we don't have a problem now and may never have a problem or we will have a problem soon. What's easier than shredding a plastic bag with a cooked chicken carcass inside that must be very easy to smell for a cunning coyote? I don't get it. |

Attempted suppression...You do not wish this thread were not here? Maybe I misunderstood. Maybe you wish the coyote problem was not real? Please clarify. |
Not that anyone asked, but it makes no difference to me if there is a coyote thread running all the time.
I just wish more people would start threads on different topics or present their interests too. Sure it takes research and effort and maybe some thicker skin but I think it's part of the deal when you join TOTV. Every now and than start a new thread. |
When reading the numerous coyote threads does one look at it as kahy-oht or kahy-oh-tee. I heard it pronounced as kahy-oht in the Midwest, but I say kahy-oh-tee as in Wile E. Coyote.

Some posters just want to drill the coyote issue into our brains. We know they're out there, we know we have to be very cautious with our pets, we know not to leave our cats on the lanai. They are here, as are the alligators, bob cats, etc. We moved here for many reasons, I for one love the wild life. I know to be cautious and aware of my surroundings, especially when walking my dog. But, starting another thread to hash it all over again.....really??

I agree with Tal. Eliminate the ones who are caught causing a problem, and learn to live with the rest. Just like we do with the alligators. After coyotes, there will be something else. East Arlington, Ohio, is a helluva long way away from TV. I just don't see how bringing all these out-of-area incidences does anything but incite. |

That's where I was until this subject got a lot of attention and links. |

There are NOT packs of killer coyotes roaming the streets looking for trouble. As long as people are sensible, I believe they have nothing to fear. Sensible to me means "Keep your cats indoors, never let them outside the house and don't leave them on the lanai overnight". "Dogs should always be on a leash. Don't walk your dog at night near a wildlife preserve or a golf course, especially unleashed." After dark, you may want to carry a noisemaker and/or a stick if you're nervous. Take good care to keep your pets safe, they're depending on you. |

We now live in an age where animals can be hunted to extinction or have a right to life depending on the stories we tell ourselves and the level of our compassion.
We are not very good stewards of the earth. |
I would like more posts about cougars myself. :1rotfl: Much more interesting. :ho:

Normally, we delete threads that start with a "link only" ... we expect the OP to offer some original content, question, or make a point. This thread "got legs" with a number of replies before we got to it, so, we let it run....for now.

We are facing a problem that is changing our "paradise" lifestyle, that turns relaxed retirement into tense alertness, that promises by all other communites that have been this route to bring human vs coyote conflicts. The link posted was news because it highlights another Florida community waking up to smell the coyotes. |

It's not so black and white.
Is my paradise gone? Are we all tense? Are we all alert" Most people that live here are unaware of the coyote situation. Otherwise why would they put their trash out the night before? This is not a global warming wake up call. |
