Should Hween Behavior be PC?

Going to a more or less private party. Talk abt graciousness vs staying in character. Is it ok to say and do stuff that you otherwise would not, because you are dressed as someone whose ethics you loathe?

No, was that a guess?

Villager Joyce 10-29-2015 08:14 PM

I wouldn't go as that person.

tomwed 10-29-2015 08:33 PM

Are you going as Bill Cosby? I wouldn't bring any Jello Shots.

kittygilchrist 10-29-2015 08:42 PM

You guys are making me happy.

Someday, I could go as an angel, maybe.

Mayyybe we can get some more opinions about my possible behavior...?

redwitch 10-29-2015 09:52 PM

If you loathe the character, why would you want to behave as that character? Maybe dress as the character and say you are showing the silly side of that person. That way, you can look loathesome but still be goofy.

fred53 10-30-2015 04:41 AM

As long as you enjoy the costume you are wearing and it isn't blatantly racist, or a known serial killer of recent times go as whoever you please as you can't please everyone and those who are, or might be offended, will find something offensive about everything.

rubicon 10-30-2015 05:28 AM

One should not be rude nor act in bad taste however, political correctness on its face is both rude and in bad taste and a scourge on good communication.

Villager Joyce 10-30-2015 07:05 AM

My rule of thumb is if you need to say "I mean no disrespect" or "I probably shouldn't say this" then don't---in costume or not.

Good advice. My folks said if you have to think about it more than once, don't do it.

It all depends on your company, and the atmosphere if something is funny or not. We all have all seen costumes of the pregnant nun and laughed and never ever thought twice about it.

Just go as a Princess. You can never go wrong.

Thank you!

Right or wrong is the best medicine and recall that it's interpretation will vary from person to person.

Just don't do anything you would not anybody else to do....but have have doing it.

Depends on what characters are there. You probably should stay in character if you are going as Wily Coyote and there is a roadrunner there. Meep... meep. Or a Trump and a Hillary. Beep...beep.

Patty55 10-30-2015 09:38 AM

Just go for it, PC is highly overrated.

Bonny 10-30-2015 09:52 AM

It depends on just how awful this character is. Since we don't know, we can't really give a true opinion.
It also depends on if all the guests are close friends that know you. Then you could do some of the behavior in a laughing / light hearted way.
If there will be people that you don't know, maybe you could still do some of the character, but I would tread lightly.

What if we imagine I am Josh Earnest...ok, ok, wearing pants on fire..
You see how tricky that is?

Josh is just an example..
I am not suiting up as Josh Earnest, whose very name makes me rof and...consider his naming as having been well done.

White House Press Secretary. Hard to pick a name other than his one for that job. Joseph Fibbs?

Personally, I would not dress up as a political figure unless it was someone I admired. You will only upset those of the political persuasion that you are mocking. Politics and religion are the two subjects that are best kept at home. On the other hand, if you don't really like these people at the party, then GO FOR IT!

Excellent advice.

Jima64 10-31-2015 08:21 AM

What is the reason for offending some other group. Just be yourself, isn't that enough.

kittygilchrist 10-31-2015 09:40 AM

OK.
The question I asked was addressed by rubicon.

Thank you, tom..that is one character on my short list of what would offend me.
I must have thick skin, otherwise some comments above would make me feel like...pack up and move.

What if your real self is offensive to the PC crowd?

YOU would think of that!

If it is not correct to be an angel(religious) but is ok to be a devil or witch...then being offensive works for me.

And amen to that!

graciegirl 10-31-2015 12:52 PM

I loved dressing up in costumes all through school and when I was younger and in my prime. I liked to wear costumes that dazzled and turned heads. I liked to go to Halloween parties and eat nice snacks and have nice cold drinks. I never, ever thought to wear anything that would aggravate anyone.

I don't think it adds to the festivities.

Now I don't much like to dress up. Costumes are uncomfortable and I like my Villages costume; shorts and a golf shirt. It is so nice to have done it and enjoyed it and now just enjoy the candy, food, drinks and conversation.

kittygilchrist 10-31-2015 01:24 PM

Political costumes are in the top ten sales for 2015.....national retail federation.

I don't mind at all if you disagree with me, you always do it so gently and politely and leave my ego intact.

We don't always have to agree. That is the joy of being a grown up.

xoxox.

Kitty? Will you catch that rat?

quirky3 10-31-2015 03:16 PM

If the party is being given in a private home, you might consult with the host as a courtesy.
