BE VERY AWARE OF Village Pet Spa
I've gone to Village Pet Spa for grooming and boarding for 2 years. I love Julia who groomed my 2 dogs. I boarded for a week with them, but the last time I boarded with them for 2 weeks. I picked them up after 2 weeks and they were INFESTED with TICKS. So bad that I took them to the Vet, because they were suffering so badly.
The dogs are always on flea and tick meds. and I get my courtyard villa sprayed. So before you start telling me it couldn't have been caused by them, I do want to share with you that the ticks have been conquered after 2 long weeks and there has not been a recurrence since....needless to say I'm never going back.... |

But in fairness, you have had a 2 year relationship with this establishment, and I assume no problems. I very much doubt the Pet Spa owners made a trip to "Ticks-R-Us" and bought a bushel full to infest the dogs in their care. Most likely they hitchhiked in on some other dog, maybe one that did not have an owner as caring as you. Could this have been spotted? Maybe, who knows. It does sound like an isolated incident on the face of it. I might also check with your Vet and ask why your dogs tick meds were ineffective in protecting them from this infestation. Hope it never happens again and Merry Christmas! |

Too bad the damage has already been done with the post on here and the Internet forever. |
Ticks or fleas ?

Something else to consider .... when I first moved to The Villages 4 1/2 years ago, my vet told me to keep my dogs away from the pine straw, as it is a prime location for them to pick up ticks. We never saw pine straw as bedding before, not even in Tampa where we lived for 7 years prior. So, if the OP had any fresh pine straw recently layed or if Village Pet Spa had put down pine straw possibly around where the dogs go out, that could be the cause.
So happy your two are doing fine. As I am sure you are aware, keep an eye out for any unusual health issues or blotchy skin rash, as ticks spread lyme disease. Check yourself also. |
Never hurts to be aware, but please don't panic over the prospect of you or your dogs getting lyme disease. Borellia burgdorferi (bacteria causing lyme) is spread by Ixodes scapularis (black legged deer tick) in the eastern US, specifically the northeast and upper Midwest. The chances of acquiring it in Florida are extremely low. Human incidence in FL is 0.4/100,000, and most cases were acquired by travel elsewhere. By contrast the incidence in Maine is 87.9, even Alaska was 0.7, so no need to panic. If you do watch for a rash, erythema chronicum migrans (ECM), it looks like a bulls eye target at least 3 inches across. (sorry Luvr, not blotchy) I've seen hundreds of them and they are pretty distinctive. Unfortunately, Southern tick associated rash illness (STARI) has a similar rash, is transmitted by the lone star tick, and is more prevalent in the south. It does not have the same consequences as lyme.

Available at your vet for tick prevention... Nexguard and Bravecto.
Better place for boarding...Bedtime Tails |
That happened to our dogs in July. They were there for 11 days. Also had them groomed there. When they can home we found ticks on them. The owner gave me a song and a dance. To bad, the groomer did a great job, but no wont go back. Sorry folks that place had a bad reputations years ago but I thought with new owners it was better but I guess not.

Village Pet Spa - Home
Here's a link to the Villages Pet Spa. I hope someone from there will give an explanation on TOTV. |
My friend just took her two dogs to Villages Pet Spa this morning.
She said it was extremely busy with lots of people taking their dogs in for boarding over Christmas. |
We boarded our dog at Villages Pet Spa in October of this year. We selected Villages Pet Spa after visiting other kennels in the area. We found Villages Pet Spa to be very clean compared to the others. I am at a loss how a dog could get ticks at this kennel. I would hope the OP has contacted the management for their comments.
I do not like to see people post complaints about a business, be it a restaurant or boarding kennel, without having talked to the management to resolve the issue. I would not hesitate to board my dog here again. |
don't blame the kennel for your failure to protect your dog with revolution which will prevent any ticks or fleas.
|
When you dont have a tick problem till you take a pet somewhere as pet boarding where do you think a problem is.
|
I love Village Pet Spa and so do my dogs. Please think about the permanent harm that is done to local businesses by airing complaints on a public forum.

Your baby may have picked them up in the exercise pen area out front - very wooded all around, many overhanging trees and ticks have legs and can crawl.... Just saying.
On the other hand, someone should have had hands on the dog and noticed/remedied the problem. Yes, their management needs to respond to this thread to clarify. |
Our dogs Ben and Jerry like it here and their haircuts they get here.
Maybe the OPs dogs came with ticks. Remember Frontline or whatever has to be applied every month. It doesn't kill ticks on contact but before it can harm the pet. |

Exactly. They should have noticed the ticks, they are responsible for the safety and well being of these animals and as such should be doing as if they were the owners. I'd be angry if it were my dog. |

Who knows what flea & tick prevention OP's dogs are on? Could be Revolution, but they didn't say. We used some awful, greasy topical flea & tick in Michigan because it was supposedly the best, and we lived in dune grass. I can't remember the name. But it worked.
I would let the owners know about the problem so they can check their facilities and make remedies if needed. |

Try giving raw garlic mixed in with the dog food. Ticks hate the garlic! I have a Golden Retriever "0llie" who just loves to roll in leaves and run thru the woods.. Ticks are common in MA. This really does help! Check with your vet for dosage if using the pill form of garlic.

I visited the Village Pet Spa yesterday to pick up a friend's two dogs. They were boarded at the Spa for a week.
No fleas, no ticks, no problems. My friend always leaves her dogs at the Spa, she loves the place and her dogs love it also. She has moved to Fort Pierce but still brings her dogs to The Village Pet Spa for boarding because she thinks they do a great job. It appeared to me to be a very clean, well-run boarding facility. The dogs even came home with a report card with comments about their time at the Spa. |
I have taken our dog there for day care and a bath and found the place to be very clean and well-run. He came home clean as a whistle. I was shown all parts of the facility, including touring the outside yard. I came away with no ticks, and I'm not on tick meds!

What's wrong with people?? You've been going there for 2 years and now you have 1 problem and your never going back? That's the same as eating at a restaurant for 2 years and get one bad meal and the world is coming to an end. Most likely it was one of the other customers that brought the problem to Village Pet Spa. If you could also clear up whether it was fleas (which usually infest a dog) or ticks (which attach themselves and suck blood), because a dog usually will get ticks when they go hunting or are in a wooded area.
|
My dog stayed for 5 days over Christmas. Great place. No ticks. Would take him back there again...
|
We always used Pet Spa for our elderly boxer, Bailey, and she received TLC and we felt the staff really cared about each and every dog. Used them for two years. I would recommend them for any dog.

I've noticed there are more positive reviews about Village Pet Spa than negative ones. It's very easy to trash a business by posting a thread with a negative title. Unfortunately that information then becomes part of internet history. |
since there are perhaps a dozen knowledgeable posters on this forum that can be taken serious there probably isn't too much damage done.
