where to buy FL oranges and grapefruit
Publix does not carry local oranges or grapefruit. Any idea where to buy them? Or pick them?

Jennings fruit market corner of 466 and 301. Near Walmart

Unfortunately the Florida Citrus crop has had a few bad years. Greening fungus has killed many trees and several freezers over the past 10-15 yrs has taken it's toll.
We prefer Florida citrus to Ca. citrus , but it is hard to find. Thus you see the abandoned stands around the villages. We haven't been to the Farmer's Market this fall/winter, but last year there was a stand offering a great selection and fair prices. You could sample the fruit too. That's where I would look first. |
I can help you on this: If you like to U-Pic..go to 13380 S.E. Sunset Harbor Rd, Weirsdale
Tel. 352-821-2986...Grapefruit and Oranges. Also from there continue to go straight to CR25a take left go about 2miles on the right..terrific Grapefruit. U-Pic or not your choice. U-Pic Peaches Late May in Lady Lake , Tel. 352-217-8853 Wow !! |
I think there is a Florida Citrus Stand just this side of the entrance to I75 on Rt 44.

If you want to get FL Oranges of many types, Grapefruit, and Orange Juice Concentrate by the case along with nuts and frozen vegitalbes, you need to join the Sumter County Farm Bureau. Fourty years ago when I was working in MD, some Scientists were married to farmers and some farmers worked there to support the farm, needless to say the rest of us could order thru them. Costs $45/yr. As one working there who had been working in FL before said, "They export all the good ones"

The oranges and Grapefruits were in 4/5th bushel baskets, great if you can share as was hard to keep up in MD in cold garage.

Jennings
I also buy my citrus at Jennings at 301 and 466. Theirs usually comes from Indian River area, their prices are very reasonable, and they are customer-friendly. Last time I was in, I mentioned that I'd had a bad orange in a previous bag and he went and grabbed a loose orange to replace it, n/c. Sometimes the fruit doesn't look all beautiful like the dressed up California oranges in the store, but it still tastes great.

Where to buy Oranges/Grapefuits
I have bought & have had visiting relatives buy from The Orange Barn (301 US-441, Lady Lake, FL 32159). They carry only the FL oranges & grapefruits which are in season at any particular time of year. So you know you are getting FL fruit. They also have OJ in gallons & lots of other food items to buy. Really enjoy their shop.

Where to Buy local citrus - Gregory's Groves
I sent fruit to all of my relatives in NC at Christmas, and they were thrilled with the quality of the oranges they received from Gregory's Groves in nearby Weirsdale. I know the owner personally and know that they take great care to provide only the best. Honeybells are now in, and there are some great deal both online, or you can call 800-466-3923.

Take HWY 42 east to Umatilla. There is a new Citrus Country Store. Fresh Oranges and Juice. 25 minutes from Villages, nice drive!
|
I ordered Florida Honeybell Oranges when they were the TSV on QVC last week! Unfortunately, I missed the first shipment and won't get mine for at least another week.
Ok, so I'm in snowy Michigan and can't go to any of the local vendors. But. I'm going to subscribe to this thread for future reference! |
You can order Honeybells from Jennings here: Honeybells

If you want a huge selection and the experience of picking your own visit Showcase of Citrus, 5010 US Hwy 27, Clermont. They offer acres and acres of every citrus variety you can imagine. If you don't want to pick your own they also have plenty sold by the pound or by the bag. It's a fun adventure in pretty weather!

I buy mine from a gentleman on Sun Harbor Road, on the right where you turn to go to Elton Beach. Very good oranges and prices.

I'm curious what would one tray of oranges cost if I were able to buy them near The Villages? |
I know this thread is an old one, but I thought it would be a good place to add this info.......
On Friday I bought wonderful, big, sweet Ruby Red grapefruit at Jennings on the corner of 466 and 301. They were 75 cents each. I bought some really good oranges there, too. I chose everything from those bins outside. |

You can eat grapefruit? So many people have mentioned that they can't because of some common medication seniors take. I can't think what it is. |

Grapefruit juice and statins - Harvard Health |

Yes. I do. I had forgotten about the point you just made. Here is all I know about that............ I know there are medical articles about grapefruit and statins so people who take statins and like grapefruit should ask their docs. I think the grapefruit effect may vary by amount and also may vary by the specific statin within that class of drugs. Certainly statin-users should check on the science with their doctors. Thanks. |
reeds at the farmers market has locally grown citrus....they also ahve a stand on 25 a quarter of a mile south of 42
