Cassie,

The show was "Joan of Arcadia." It was wonderful. It could serve as a terrific discussion opener with young people, about many things, including how we treat each other while we are here. It is out there on DVD. I have given it as a gift.

Oh YES!! Thanks Boomer!! I did love that show!!!!

Boomer 10-21-2008 06:53 PM

Northern Exposure was mentioned here and I remembered how much I liked that one. I started to watch the recent Men in Trees which had some similarities to NE. I don't know if it is still on. When shows change their nights all the time, they often lose me.

I really liked Coach, Taxi, and an old one that I don't think ever became very well-known, Perfect Strangers I think was the name of it. Balke was the cousin from some strange country and the humor could get pretty slapstick which I like. And, of course, I Love Lucy, although I guess that one was not exactly canceled. Old sitcoms are my favorite TV shows still.

The Great Fumar 10-21-2008 09:00 PM

Martin Sheen was terrific although very short ,,,,They would have done better starring him as an ashtrey..............

Boomer 10-21-2008 09:08 PM

HOWDY DOODY!!!!

How could I have forgotten Howdy Doody?

And now the song just got stuck in my head.

I was one of those skinny, picky eater kids. (got over it) My mother would not let me watch Howdy Doody until I ate everything on my plate.

One time I told her, "Howdy Doody will wait." Well, of course, he did not. But in 1980 I think it was, I saved up to buy a Betamax so that they all would "wait." I guess I was just ahead of my time back in the 50's.

Howdy Doody seems to have had a lot of influence on my life.

Winky Dink and You was on Channel 2 (CBS) in NY but I don't know if it was a nationally syndicated show. The gimmick, if you call it that, was parents could purchase for their children a "kit" that contained a thin piece of plastic which stuck to the tv screen and the children could draw images that was on the program. The box came with the plastic sheet and the crayons and instructions.

The reason I remember that show from the early 50's is that ... "oh, no you little brat!" were the words I heard when I drew the figures but didn't have the plastic sheet. I guess I wasn't supposed to draw directly on the tv screen but neither Mom nor Dad had purchased the kit.

Oh, boy! these memories are gonna cause me to go back for additional therapy sessions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winky_Dink_and_You
