So what is a Kindle owner to do??

Since Sumter County Library has dropped "Overdrive" I am at a loss as to what to do to check out books for my Kindle. I don't have my old library card from Utah. They had a great system, but I got rid of our cards when we moved.

Any suggestions? I do like current fiction and don't want to sign up for a service that has a limited selection or just older releases.

Does anyone have a service that they like? Can we get library cards from Ocala? Do they have a decent program for Kindles?

Help!!

There are many online websites that offer free or very inexpensive books for your Kindle. Try googling " Free Amazon Books for Kindle" for a start. Bookbub.com, pixelofink.com and ereadernewstoday.com are just a few others.

try the library in Philadelphia

Try Kindle Buffet. I like this one because the app lets me read the book on both devices and my phone. While I don't care to read a book on a phone, I got stuck in a car for 3 hours and was thankful that I had it. Free books are great!

Amazon Prime

The problem with these sites is that they do not have the latest books for FREE. That is why I liked using the Sumter library with my Kindle. I stopped by the Belvedere branch the other day to pick up some hardback books and the guy behind the counter had no sympathy for me and my Kindle problem.

With Sumter Library no longer working with OverDrive & having received a new iPad for Christmas - I downloaded the Library2Go! app as well as the Axis 360 which work well as replacements.

I belong to a membership deal with Amazon for about $9.00 a month. I get tons of free books through there. I am never without something to read. You check out books and return them then you can get more.
Many of the books I get would normally cost $4-$5 each if you purchased them in the kindle store and I get unlimited with this.

We got library cards at the Lady Lake Library. Cost is $40 per year per household. The Overdrive works the same, online, as the Sumter Co Library did. Worth the $40 and supports another local business.

Are you referring to Amazon Prime?

If not what other "membership deal" are you using?

Consider purchase of a small Android tablet with Google Play so you could add the Axis360 app needed for the Sumter Library. Since your purpose is reading books, skip the more expensive tablets with 18 cameras, a processor that would sent a rocket to Mars, etc. Just look for a comfortable-to-hold size, access to Google Play, decent battery life, and an acceptable screen for eye comfort.

For any tablet you're considering, check the reviews to see what other users think. Skip the "greatest tablets for 2016" because they'll likely be the latest, greatest and most expensive.

You can find a tablet that will do the job for less, even much less, than $100. To get started, you could check Walmart's site and the reviews on inexpensive tablets there.

This site provides a link to a document which describes how to get non kindle approved apps onto your Kindle. Once the kindle allows it use the Silk web Browser to find and download the library2go app

I was excited to check out the link but it states that it only works on Kindle fire and some of the other tablet internet Kindles with browsing capability. So I think I am still screwed.

I'm gonna try to see if any of the other Kindle websites provide access to new releases. I don't want to pay per book or a monthly fee. The Overdrive app was so good. It is too bad they stopped using it.

I would suggest you try the Kindle Boards forum (www dot kboards dot com).
Very knowledgeable and helpful folks.
I wasn't aware of any Kindle without wifi browsing capability.

The library in Gainsville use Overdrive. A library card is free to any resident in Florida but must be applied for in person. I picked up mine after the switch to axis360 by Sumter Library (axis 360 absolute garbage, full of glitches) I went to Micanopy, just North of Ocala of I75, quaint town, had lunch, browsed the antique stores, then the library. Very helpful and aware of Sumter’s switch to axis360, I do not think I was the first from Sumter County too visit because of axis360.

dp000 01-22-2016 09:16 AM

The Lady Lake library has overdrive, but since Sumter County library does not have a agreement with Lake County, the library card will cost you $40 per year. Well worth it. The problem is that Sumter County Library doesn't care what we want or think. I feel sorry for the employees with all the grief they are getting.

oatmealgirls 01-22-2016 06:14 PM

Overdrive available

Durham is correct. Alachua County District Library Cards are free to FL residents. You must go in person. The link below will give you all the information, and it has a link to all the locations.

I have a Kindle Fire and so far the Axis 360 is working OK. Initially I couldn't find the book I had downloaded on my Kindle because I was clicking on books and didn't realize you have to click on the Axis 360 app. I don't like it as well as Overdrive and wish it were simpler.

Brencpa 01-22-2016 11:46 PM

I have a Nook and it does not work with it. I also have a cheap RCA e-reader from Walmart that is Android and does not work either. Not sure what features it needs to be compatible with Axis 360 as both e-readers worked with Over Drive. Very disappointed.

Buy the books! The authors need the money.

Or borrow thru Amazon Prime But buy some and help the authors.

Will not work for Paperwhite.

Google Free Library of Philadelphia. It is free for senior citizens and uses Overdrive.

If you have a relative somewhere else and their library uses overdrive ask them to get a library card if they don’t already have one and then you can log on with that number and get books for your kindle.
