Security Cameras

Does anyone have any advice for us regarding security cameras? We are going to install them on the front and back of our house outside and would appreciate any input about what brand/type and who installed them for you.
Feel free to post your response here or PM me. Thanks.

Are you going to have an alarm/siren that will scare off intruders so they don't enter your home and personal space?

villagetinker 02-03-2016 09:15 AM

If you are looking for DIY, Sams Club has a nice Samsung (I think) system, 4 cameras, large hard drive, and the capability to monitor remotely, cables etc included.
Be aware of anything from Harbor Freight (do a goggle search), there are a large number of units (Swan, for example) that look alike but are based on the same internal electronics, and have a very bad reputation online.
If you are looking for turn key, be ready to spend anywhere from $1500 to over $3500. I know of only 2 installers, Galaxy, and the Security company on 441 just south of 466 (the castle like building).
Hope this helps.

I have the SimpliSafe Security system. They have been advertising through email that they are going to have a security camera soon. I have been waiting for months for it but I am getting ready to get one from another vendor so I am interested in this also.

I recently became aware of the Netgear Arlo system. Maybe have a look at that.

Galaxy

Take a look at AT&T Digital Life. The packages can be as basic or advanced as you like. Besides security cameras you can have water main auto shut-off in the event a leak is detected. Lighting can be automated and thermostat too. All can be monitored and controlled via smart phone or tablet. Worth a look.

I did a corner to corner electric wiring of my lot under the doctrine of Stand Your Ground. boy its kool to hear those bugs get zapped

I do like the idea of that wireless system they advertise on TV

villagetinker 02-03-2016 01:59 PM

Anybody going with wireless systems, please make sure they are password (strong password) protected, otherwise you just gave the bad guys a view INSIDE your property. Recently (last several months) there was an article about a Russian website that had thousands of household unprotected web cameras, there IP address, etc. All a bad guy (or your nosey neighbor) had to do was type in the IP address, and bingo, they were watching you.
My point, TOO MANY people buy these systems, connect to the internet, and never think about the security of the video feed.
Hope this helps.

rubicon 02-03-2016 02:51 PM

I'll bet those Russians never hack my security pass word "Stalin 123" what American patriot wold use Stalin

Check out the Ring doorbell, it may find it a good solution. It is at ring dot com

Pibb26 02-04-2016 07:28 AM

The Ring Doorbell is a great inexpensive start to having cameras. They also have add on cameras now. Can be set off by motion or the ring of the door bell. I like knowing who is at the door before I answer and if anybody is in my yard. Has a pretty good wide angle lens on it as well as two way speak/listen.
All the video goes to be saved in the cloud for about $30/year.

Hal :-) 02-04-2016 10:24 AM

I have a Ring Doorbell. It was a little disappointing. Motion can be slow to activate. For example, if someone quickly drops off a package or throws a phonebook you may not even see it. The motion is detected, camera turns on, and it takes a sec to focus. You may get a 30 sec video that doesn't show anything. The second disappointment is that you can't access the camera directly, all you have is the short clips that are uploaded.

I also have Dropcams, which is now Nest. They work very well, simple to install. You can access the camera directly anytime, but with the subscription you have 24/7 recording online. I forgot exact cost, maybe $100/yr, you get a discount on multiples. I have 7-10 days available online, motion or sound occurrences are clearly marked on a timeline and you can replay or make clips to retain before it falls off.

I don't understand why it's taken so long. Doesn't seem to be such a technical hurtle.

Xfinity Home and ADT have outdoor camera options, but you need to subscribe for their monitoring services. We have a Piper for indoor camera/security which works really well.

Chatbrat 05-17-2016 03:40 PM

Security cameras, IMHO, are a facade, they don't stop anyone, all they do is help apprehend the culprit after the fact--a good audible alarm is a good deterrent and

the knowledge and the ability to defend yourself before he police arrive to take notes &ask questions is very important.

Remember law enforcement , usually arrives after crime is commited

Do you want to have a monthly service fee or just the one time installation cost?

You can set up your own wifi system. Major problem will be access to electrical outlets.

You will want night vision cameras.

Do you want motion and or sound detection cameras that will send snap sots of what they see to your email account when sound or motion is detected?

Do you want to record video 24 hours a day?

Do you want to store the video at your home or offsite.

The above are some things for you to consider.

Packer Fan 05-17-2016 04:40 PM

I can't tell you what to use, but I can tell you what NOT to - stay away from FOSCAM completely- hard to set up, stop working for no reason, and no technical support at all - well there is but they take forever to get ahold of and then don't know anything. STAY AWAY.

GuardMe 08-25-2016 04:00 PM

There are many options when it comes to home security cameras. First you need to ask yourself a few questions...
1. What is the goal of the cameras? {Outdoor Coverage? Watch Pets, Deliveries ETC}
2. What level of quality is acceptable to you? {Cameras are available from $20 - $5,000 and as expected there is a huge difference between them}
3. Do you want to watch live video and/or recorded video/audio?
4. Buy the recorder equipment or pay a monthly fee?

At GuardMe we are here to be used as a resource to The Villages community to answer any security questions you may have.

Remember, being armed at home only works when you ARE AT home ... And when the intruder gets INTO the home.

A good monitored system such as ADT will keep the intruder OUT even when you are not at home. The 165 db alarm both inside and outside the house will scare off an intruder and your home is safe. No burglar will stick around to ransack with the alarm horn blaring inside and outside and knowing the police have been notified.

Ihave Simply Safe also and it is a great security sys but gave uo on their camera promise.

Hete are tw suggestion:
Arlo by Netgear. Totally wireless and eazy to set u.

oCO powered by. IVideon. Much less expensive than Arlo and superb quality. EZ set up. Cams are only $79 each. No fee for basic service. View cams on your smartphone or iPad or computer.
I own an Arlo sys but replacing batteries will get expensive. Just installed two of the iVideon cams. I think you can even get them at Home Depot.

gturay 08-25-2016 08:57 PM

I have two foscam cameras, one inside and one out. I also paid $79.00 for up to four camera cloud recording. Motion sets recording after 5 seconds and the inside unit also has audio. I will have a picture and voice record of the burglar. No alarm, but I do have signs on doors telling all that they are on camera. But you also need to have internet on all the time, and wired power, even thought the signal is wireless to the modem and Internet..

The idea is to keep intruders OUT of the house. That is the thought behind installing a monitored alarm system. It can be armed when you are at home or when you are away.

Bay Kid 08-27-2016 06:38 AM

Y-Cam. Very good.

graciegirl 08-27-2016 08:05 AM

We have a lot of cameras in our neighborhood. From many different sources.

When it comes to security, it is wise to keep your methods to yourself.
