Lowe's "Veterans Discount" is misleading
Lowe's advertises that it gives veterans a 10% discount. This is a false statement.
They will not accept a DD-214 as proof of service. They say that they only accept a Department of Veterans Affairs health ID card. If you are a veteran, you cannot get a VA ID card if you don't have some service related disability or if you have too much income. This discriminates against veterans who managed to do well enough with their lives after serving our country to have some financial security. Any of us who served should not be discriminated against. |

1) To qualify you must be currently serving in, or retired from a qualifying branch of the Armed Forces or be a member of someone who is and have a valid Military ID card... Of course dependents of active duty and retired military qualify for the 10% discount all they need to do is produce it at the time of purchase. 2) Be a Veteran who receives VA Benefits and have a valid Veteran Identification Card ... ( VC ).... 3) Now on certain Holiday times of the year they " Lowes " and " Home Depot " extend this 10% discount to all Veterans...Memorial Day...July 4th...and Veterans Day... 4) Finally Lowe's or Home Depot are Not Discriminating against you or any Veteran however, that is their policy..not any different then " It's in the Regulations " .. You simply do not qualify. |

I totally agree. Never had a problem with Lowes, just show them my VA ID card and they applied my 10% discount. Many of the Lowe's employees said "Thanks for your service." Had some Home Depot stores tell me the discount only applied on certain holidays, but now they have changed and except the ID card any day, any purchase. If the OP wants a ID card he can apply for VA medical enrollment. Once accepted he will receive a VA ID card w/photo. It doesn't matter how much money you make, you will be put into a certain category depending upon your income. |

The discounts are well thought out and legal. If you qualify with the clearly expressed rules , you are eligible. |
I agree with the Original post. Years ago VA medical benefits where not based on Financial wealth and may people enrolled today are quite well off and still use the VA. Today when after many years have gone by the VA has decided to grandfather those people and deny others they deem financially fit.

The point is that Lowe's says that they offer a 10% discount to veterans.
I am a veteran and they will not honor my DD-214. |

I agree. And like the heading of your first post says - Lowe's "Veterans Discount" is misleading. :( |
Lowes and the Home Depot discounts are NOT for veterans, they are for active & retired military-very clear. I'm a retired USN-R submariner, thru the reserves.
These stores make it very clear when they offer their discounts to veterans. Had a buddy who was with the NY Air Nat Guard, he was shot down doing a photo recon over Cuba during the missile crisis- NOT A Vet, he was picked up by air sea rescue off of Key West. Be happy you're alive & living--lots of vets, especially those exposed to Agent Orange were not that lucky. Home Depot is one of the most generous companies in the event of a disaster, If some one could post , what Home Depot, did for Moore,Ok when they where hit by a tornado--no one , should say anything negative about that company |
How about the " V" on my FL. drivers Lic. I had to produce my Honorable Discharge & my DD214 for the DMV to get it. Will they honor that if you show them your Drivers Lic.

This is very odd?
I have a veterans card from the VA and I show it to either store and they give me a 10% discount every time, no questions asked or had them deny my discount? They can not combine the discount with a sale price or a special offer. Though I complained to Home Depot about my 10% via email and they gave the extra discount after a carpet special. I know you need the ID card but I have never heard of anyone that couldn't get one ? I went down to my local VA office with my DD-214 and they issued me a card right away. I would call your local VA office and get the card. One time Home Depot only gave the discount if you were a disabled vet but they stopped that and give it to any vet now regardless of disability status. I would definitely get the card asap. Many stores offer a discount you just ask them and the worst they could say is no. Good Luck And Thanks for Serving |

I didnt know they do that Thanks:ho: |
To all that disagree with Lowe's and Home discount policy to Active Duty Military, their Dependents, Retired Military their Dependents and those Veterans who qualify,...those Vet's feel that they are discriminated against this what you need to do.
Google Lowe's ... and Home Depot Military Discount Policy ..it spells it out very clear. So clear that when you were serving way back when..Remember checking the Regulations on most any given subject..for whatever reason the reg. spelled it out. So like it or not it's what the reg. stated, you agree or not if you felt you were getting a raw deal, well that's part life in the Military, simply put You had no choice but to accept it and move on. The policies of both stores are no different than those regulations. Obviously some of you feel slighted that it states " Veteran Discount " , and taking that as Verbatim... " All " Veterans. In the case of Veterans it absolutely spells out crystal clear to those Veterans what ID they need to produce at the time of purchase. Deal with it !! |
I was there today. I showed my VA ID to the cashier. He thanked me for my service and shook my hand. I may be mistaken but you can get a VA ID even if you do not have any disability. Mine says Service Connected on it so why would they put that on it if only Service Connected Vets could get one. May be worth looking into it.

Thank you all for your service.
I hope this link helps. Lowe's and Home Depot Military and Veteran Discounts Explained - Guardian Of Valor |
Actually.. if you are a Vietnam Veteran you automatically qualify for service connected benefits no what your income bracket is. I know first hand after being denied while living in south Fl,. Moved here and showed my DD-214 to the VA they granted me benefits.
Good Luck. |
I agree with the OP.
It wasn't until we moved here that the veteran's status on Lowe's became an issue to us. In Utah, if you had a DD214 your driver's license was stamped VETERAN, and all my hubby had to do was show his driver's license and he received the 10% discount at Lowe's. Any day, every time we shopped at Lowe's, his veteran status was honored. I think perhaps because there are so many retirees here, the "written policy" is strictly enforced. We weren't aware of the "written policy' in Utah. For 25 yrs he received the veteran discount with no questions asked. It was a bit embarrassing when we first bought something at Lowe's here in Lady Lake with my hubby and although he had his Utah driver's, stamped VETERAN, he was denied the discount. We felt like we had been trying to cheat them. Very perplexing. We went online and found the policy. But it certainly isn't enforced uniformly across the country. They could make the qualifications much clearer. A "veteran" is anyone who honorably served our country and can show their DD214. Extra criteria should be clearly spelled out in ads that offer a10% discount to "veterans". |

I think that the discount offered by @Lowe's and Home Depot has been well covered and a lot of helpful advice has been passed along...with that in mind here is some additional information regarding discounts which applies to Active Duty Military, Retired Military and their Dependents, and all Veteran's regardless of status...obviously a valid ID is required.
Walgreens in the Villages offers 25% Discount on all Walgreen products, 15% on all other products excluding cosmetics and alcohol. Just show your ID at time of purchase and your all set. CVS does not offer this..don't waste your time asking. |
Yet Walgreens does not support Tricare For Life ,scripts- what duh

Va id
I was also denied a VA ID card because of income limits. So after serving six years, I do not qualify even for an ID confirming that I am a veteran.

Service connected is a disability it could mean 10% or 150% disabled Home Depot cared at one time but not anymore Any card will get u the discount service connected or not But you Must get a VA card to receive the discount Thanks to all who served 👋🏻 |

I don't understand why they won't issue you a card? When I applied for a card no one asked me my income? The only time I had a issue with income was with travel pay They won't comp travel pay if you make too much $$ Speaking of travel pay the VA will comp you travel pay everytime you have a doctors appt if you submit the form I lived 20 miles from the VA and the gave me $20 every visit |

The card was authorized by legislation signed by the President and does not grant privileges for any veterans benefits. It is nothing more than an ID indicating proof of service. |
You should be able to get an ID card from the VA, income determines what benefits you can get or if you have enough of a service connected disability.
Take your dd-214 to the dmv & have them put the v on your driver's license. |

Stop Whining... For me call the mess Sgt. put em on the grease pit for two weeks...end of whining.... It was always down to the " Easy Way " or the " Hard Way "..for some obviously ya gotta shake your head .

There seems to be a lot of confusion about what does and doesn't qualify here, so I went to their website. They are not bad guys; their policy is very clear. There are certain holidays where they "honor all veterans" and a DD214 is accepted, but the rest of the year there are more narrow qualifications. This explains everything very clearly.
Thank you to Lowe's for their decision to support the US Military. Here is their statement: Military Discount Lowe's established the 10% Military Discount to support the men and women who are currently serving our country in the Armed Services1 and to honor Retired Veterans and VA Recipients.2 This 10% discount is also extended to the immediate family3 of those who are currently serving, Retired Veterans, or VA Recipients. To qualify for the Everyday 10% Military Discount, you must: Be currently serving in, or retired from, a qualifying branch of the Armed Services, or be the immediate family member of someone who is and have a valid military ID Card. Or: Be a veteran who receives VA benefits and have a valid Veteran Identification Card (VIC). We honor all Veterans on three specific holidays: Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day. During these three holiday weekends, we extend the discount to all veterans who served honorably and who present a valid Form DD214 or other proof of service. The Lowe’s Military Discount is extended to the Veteran community on these three holidays only. The Military Discount must be used on personal purchases only and cannot be used for Lowes.com purchases, previous sales, or the purchase of gift cards or services including product installations. It cannot be combined with the Lowe’s Price Guarantee, or promotions such as "Spend and Get," "New Mover," "Project Starter," "Your Choice," or discounts such as Quote Support Program (QSP) quotes. •1 Armed Services — US Army, US Navy, US Air Force, US Marine Corps, US Coast Guard, or the National Guard and who are in active, reserve, or retired status. •2 Retired Veterans and VA Recipients — Veterans who have retired after 20 years of service and/or those who receive VA Benefits •3 Immediate Family — Spouses and/or dependent children (up to 18 years old.) |
I think you asked the wrong person.even though I use my retired ID card, DD214 should satisfy the requirement if it says "type of service honorable."

Just like some companies say a senior discount starts at age (50). Others at age (55). Some business offer discounts to women only on Wednesdays. If you owned a business you might offer different discounts. People under a senior discount age limit do not complain, so you need to move on. IF you have a complaint with the VA and their procedures and policies then contact your government rep and and ask for a change to the policy. Also, IF you do not agree with someones policies, Do not shop there! MOVE ON! |
This thread has turned nasty time to lock it.

Clear not ambiguous and quite well thought out policy. Buy the way, ACE on 466 has just recently adopted a similar policy. |
My how times have changed. How long ago were we all saying that serving in the military was just a partial payback for living in the USA... an honor to serve and the least we could do. So we went, did our best, and most of us came home to resume our lives.
A number of years passed and along with the rest of the country a lot of veterans have joined the gimme bunch. Suddenly the guy who spent 2 years moaning and bitching at Ft. Dix thinks he was Audie Murphy and George Patton rolled into one... and should be honored accordingly. Fifty years later they feel they deserve a 10% discount on a lawn mower! I think Lowe's is quite generous. But... to keep things "fair" perhaps Lowe's should stop the discount altogether. (that last sentence is sarcasm in case anyone is confused). |
States like Texas and Missouri, probably many others I know for sure those two do, gladly accepts DD-214 and when they see you were serving during Viet Nam they really tell you how much they appreciate you. Here, Lowes has simply decided there are too many of us so the created a policy to eliminate most of us. But that is business, so we have no choice but live with it.
