Rules for dog owners
Playing golf at Briarwood today;;; along the cart path someone took their dog for a walk and let him do his business (s##t)
First of all, cart paths are for golfers, and not to walk your dog. Secondly they should have picked up.Most of us know the rules, and I would assume the culprit was some one who made their first visit here and does not know the rules. Also on my front lawn, the other day I noticed some one else let their dog do the same thing on my lawn.Nobody picked it up. A day or 2 later I noticed a person walking their dog and letting the dog use my lawn for their personnel bath room.I immediatly told her not to let her dog use my lawn for a bathroom, she got very upset and told me she picks up,I asked how do you pick up urine.(no answer) I like animals very much, but keep yours on your property,do not give them a 50 foot leash,do not bring them where they do not belong. Your animal may be cute to you but to other people they are a nuisance. Thank You |

You are my kind of person........and there's darn few of us left ..... fumar " can you say daisy air rifle" ...:cus::cus::cus: |
This subject is my major gripe here in the Villages. While I'm sure it happens elsewhere, this is where I see it.
There is this coot down the street that allows his dog to do it every single day in my neighbors yard. EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!!!!! My neighbors yell at him, I yell at him, others yell at him, we all try to talk nicely to him, but he tells us to ***k off. The last time I spoke to him about it, he said, "Awwwww, everybody does it, mind your own ****ing buiness." At one time, I posted a picture here on Talk of The Villages, of he and his dog doing their daily ****. Can somebody please advise me as to what can be done? He is not breaking any civil law, just a major ethics violation. |
very simple way to solve this problem.
Simply collect lots of do do from dogs, then place all the do do on the marks front step. You may have to repeat a couple of times, but mark will catch on real good this way. |
I agree, I would pick it up and put it on his porch.

It's tough to manage bumpkus dog...
I have a 100+ pound yellow lab... kind as can be but kinda dumb. Fortunately we live on a corner lot but old Bumpkus likes to take walks. I am fanatical about respecting others property. Unfortunately we live deep in Duval, a mile from the main road, Odell Circle ,where there are areas old Bumpkus can still do his duty when were on a walk without freaking me or anybody else out. Problem is, it's tough teaching an 8 yo lab from the mountains of Central Pa to hold it till he gets to an ok area... I think he's slowly learning but itsa slow learning curve. I will not have another dog in TV after old Bumpkus finds that golden fireplug in the sky.... Till then we walk in the MIDDLE of the streets till we get to a "safe" area. Others should too.

What I like about my courtyard villa - my two terriers have the peace of their own fenced yard, and the dog door makes life even better!
We do take them for walks, and the construction area off Amelia, and the cart path along 466A have been peaceful areas to be. the sidewalks of Odell are okay, but not very peaceful. As the terriers rarely walk in the neighborhood (they love the golf cart), calls to nature in any yard area are very rare (and Publix plastic bags work well!). I can appreciate being ticked off at the boorish pet owner. Sometimes it seems the wrong critter gets licensed where pets are concerned. If you get upset with my dogs if I screw up, you've got a right when I'm in the wrong. If you get upset with dogs just because they live, have a drink and chill. |

No-one loves dogs more than I do. But I sure don't like seeing dog crap around. And I find it despicable that a few irresponsible pet owners ruin it for everyone else. We have all agreed here on TOTV many times that responsible pet owners pick up, and dogs are not to blame. But occasionally there are rude, inconsiderate, even dirty people. Who don't pick up, even if it is pointed out to them. And in that case, I would think poop on the stoop would get the message across. |
Call for more dog parks in TV.
Think that we need more dog parks in the Villages or near them than the three existing ones.
I take my dog to the Doggie Doo Run Run every morning to do his pooping and at night carry a flashlight so that I can pick up after him. Not much you can do about the urinating though even if the males usually pee on fireplugs, lampposts, bushes, and various other things they find attractive for marking. More dog parks though in TV would allow more people in TV to get their dogs out to do their business closer to home while also respecting other Villagers' property. I do know that there are other places Villagers take their dogs out to do their business and play which are not sanctioned dog parks here in the Villages. From what I have heard there has been a lot of friction from the Villages management about these dog meeting places. |

If TV allows 2 dogs per household, they should provide dog parks. It is that simple. Otherwise it is a recipe for problems. We don't golf or play tennis or pickleball, but we cheerfully pay our amenitity bill. All we are asking is for a few scruffy areas that are fenced for dog walking. |
I live in a CY, so I let my dog go there before I take her for a walk. Pet owners I'm sure realize that urine does burn the grass and pets should only use public places or the road. I take my dog to the dog run behind the mailboxes in Rio Grande. They even have plastic bags to pick up after your dog there. My dog has white fur and she gets her paws very dirty when walking on the asphalt, so most of the time I drive her over to the dog run.

All the dog parks in the world won'[t change the slug who just opens his door, lets the dog out, and watches (sometimes) the dog from the doorway. Since the plat plan is not written in the canine language, the dog does not have true knowledge of the property line - and to me it's no different than if the owner him/herself walked out and "deposited" on the neighbor's yard. Laziness and apathy aren't fixable via more facilities.
The same holds true for the owner who doesn't bother bringing a bag or two to pick up after their dog, and the owner either tries to look sheepish or just acts arrogantly. That's just "slug" behavior by a person on the lower end of the homo sapiens development chain. Yep - "return to sender" of the unsolicited product does seem proper..... |
Gotta feel for the property owners along Glenview's Fox Run number 3 green, and number 4 (the par 3). Played it many times and hear a constant yipping/barking from doggy doo run. Noticed some places for sale....good luck unless prospective buyers are dog lovers and hard of hearing. Has to affect property values.
Before you get riled up.......we are pet (cat and dog) lovers and life support systems for each but would never want a dog park within yipping/barking distance of our house. |
There is an open area right off of the Lopez course. The Villages seems to use it as a small storage space for some equipment and a few truck beds. In the evening (4-7pm) I have seen many people bringing their dogs via golf cart or walking (on the recreation path that goes through Lopez). This seems to be a major dog walking area...I don't know if it is sanctioned or not. Perhaps one of the places that Tal was referring to...however I figure if the management doesn't have a problem with unsightly 18 wheeler truck beds just sitting there....the dogs can use it for a bathroom....
PS...I see the dog owners clean up!! Personally I will stick with my cats and the "hidden" litter box! My parents just got a dog (schnoodle) and I have never seen them so tired in their lives!!! My last thought is for Talk Host...a while back you asked why so many people drive their golf carts with their dogs a long for the ride! I didn't understand this either...but perhaps they are the kind hearted dog owners bringing them to the dog parks!! Now I get it! |

Item #2. In my earlier post, I didn't ask why so many people ride with dogs in their carts. I asked why people drive with their dogs IN THEIR LAP. It is unsafe for the dog, the owner, other drivers and pedestrians. One false move by the dog and it can mean disaster. One attempt by the drive to avoid a dangerous situation when the dog is in the way, and it can mean disaster. I can't understand, at all, how a clear thinking individual can justify driving with the obstruction of a dog on his lap. Would you put a child on your lap while you drive? |
My dog is driven by car only and if we go on long trips, she has a doggie seat belt on. I always have her on a leash, to avoid the risk of endangering her or anyone else. That's why the CY is great for pets. She can run free and her doggie door is only locked up at night. I don't think the pet owners who drive with dogs on their laps or with the dog's head sticking out of a car window realize the risk they put their pet in.

I have heard that the area near the Springdale Fitness Trail is F.P.C-SECO property.
From my walk on Christmas on the Springdale Fitness Trail it looked like the evening dog meeting place Talk Host mentions is on F.P.C.-SECO private property. This meeting area is just north of the Springdale Recreation Center on the east side of the Springdale Fitness Trail.
Not sure how the Villages management could stop people from using this? Of course, the Marion police department can issue citations for dogs off leash and maybe the F.P.C. -SECO could do something. |

I love Dogs!
I'm glad this thread is called "Rules for Dog Owners." I can never understand why people think it's "the animals" fault when something goes wrong.
Quick story: I have a friend in Chicago that had a dog trained for bodily protection. Guard dog. Well one day his niece, who he adores, 4 years old, jumped into his bed as he was napping to surprise him. (Her mother should have known better.) The dog attacked the little girl. 40 stitches in forehead. The mother demanded that he put the dog down, but he said "NO. He was just doing his job." And I respected him for that. Fast forward, that little girl who is now in her 30's, is a vet assistant and adores animals. No fear. That's the happy ending. But it could have been really bad. I blame the mother, not the dog. Point is, animals will be animals. Train the people! Some people should just not own animals. :undecided: I have to say, just as my own rule of thumb, I can't trust and don't trust people that do not like animals. |
Just A Reminder
Failure to abide by the rules may cause your neighbor to be spayed or neutered.
|
Horrors. Well maybe...................justice.

Chelsea,
Do I make your list of animal haters? I'm not particularly fond of spiders and snakes. :ohdear: |

Me Neither!

No Tony, not if you love most animals. Spiders and snakes are not on my list! I did fall in love with a rat once! Hahaha! No I mean my husband was doing surgery on a rat and I thought I would hate it, but boy was I pulling for that little thing. It turned out fine by the way. His name is Ian and one of my hubby's vet techs owns him. Still going strong! |
I get equally upset at the smokers who "flick" their cigarette butts on my lawn, sidewalk, streets & golf cart paths. We need rules for smokers!
|
Agree and Disagree!
Quote:
But more rules for smokers! Puh-lease! We have more rules now than we know what to do with! We can smoke on this side of a room and not the other. On this side of a cruise ship, but not the other. On this slot machine, but not the one next to it. Not in restaurants, but outside table is fine. Cannot smoke within 10 feet or so of Airport entrance. Geesh, this list goes one and one. In my opinion, they should have more rules for alcohol consumption. It flows freely all through The Villages, even encourages it with Happy Hours, people carrying flasks! And I can guarantee you, more innocent people are killed by drunk drivers than second hand smoke. Car accidents, cart accidents, people being hit while walking, riding bikes. I'll get off my smoker's soapbox, when I see more rules for drunks. ;) |
In keeping with the theme of this string.....
Dog owners should not let their canines smoke or drink alcoholic beverages to excess.:beer3: |

People love pets here. It is so interesting to see people stop and ask dog owners about their dog on the square. I have seen such beautiful dogs out walking their owners. We have cats and so we can't be "proud parents" outside of the house, but have seen some beautiful kitties at peoples homes. I wonder sometimes when I am reading these posts if there should be a Village of "BARK" just for pet owners.

Be not afraid. Our two dogs are also an important part of our family and they love it in TV. One weighs 70+ lbs. There are many, many pet lovers in TV! If you respect other peoples' property and pick up after your dog, you should be very happy here. The Villages currently provides a dog park in Historical, east of 441. There is a new dog park underway for the Springdale Walking Trail area (up by CR 42). I'm told TV is looking at another possible site close to 466. There is also Doggie Doo Run Run which is Dog Heaven. It is privately run, and an exceptional place to take your dog. It is a bargain at $25 per month. It is located just a mile or two north of 466 at Southern Trace Plaza. One more suggestion .. a courtyard villa with a fenced yard makes dog containment easy and painless. They can bop around day or night with no supervision. Easy peasy. |
I don't know too many places that don't have a leash law these days and I agree that picking up after anothers pet is more than distasteful. The move will be an adjustment for our pup without her fenced yard and a new routine will need to be set. The information about where/where not to take her has been helpful.
Thank you! |
Wow! Barefoot and Gracie girl! I feel so much better after reading your posts. ::deep breath:: We are really responsible pet owners and I was really freaking out thinking OMG...what if they think MY dog did it! And I GET the gift package of poo on my doorstep! Scary enough making this move, we really don't want to start off on the wrong foot because of "Kira". Bless U!

JohnnyM and Barbara just adopted Prancer, a greyhound. I often see them at Lake Sumter Landing with Prancer. He gets lots of admiration. (The dog, not Johnny.) Many people enjoy taking their dogs for golf cart rides and walking in the two Town Squares.
At our postal station, many residents walk to get their mail and take their dogs for a walk there. There are numerous pet clubs, The Responsible Dog Owners Club, Dynamic Dogs, Pet Lovers, etc. I think that you'll find that TV is definitely pet friendly! |
Pet Lovers! Yes!
GSheperd, The Villages is definitely filled with pet lovers. My husband is a Veterinarian. We have cats, but are going to get a puppy. I see dogs everywhere as stated, in the squares, at the mailbox, etc. The majority of TV loves dogs. Please don't feel intimidated in any way because of a few crabby people. If those same people didn't have dogs to complain about, they'd find something else. But seriously, they are in the minority. We welcome all dogs! And besides the dog parks, there are other events that you see dogs in like parades, etc.
(I agree Bare. Don't pay attention to Fumar posts. He's really just joking. He says he eats dogs, but that's just his sense of humor! Although I do think I saw him with an Opossum leg hanging out of his mouth once! :1rotfl:) :welcome: To The Villages. You'll love it! |
A puppy???!!!!!!!!!
Chelsea, A PUPPY???!!!!!!!!! WHAT?? Did vetman finally give in? WOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Come on girl, tell us! Whats the scoop? Do we have a pug puppy in the near future???? ::pepper2::pepper2::pepper2::pepper2: |
Gshepherd: I agree with Chels, Bare and GG, this place is doggie heaven. Everyone here loves animals, and if they can stand my crazy schnauzers, they'll all love your doggies too. Have no fear, we all love animals. That's why I moved here and haven't been disappointed yet. Welcome to TV, in my next life I wanna come back as a dog in the villages.....

Dog rules
i have to say i agree with auto show. When we first moved in several neighbors walk their dogs all the time and they used extended leases so the dog would end up on our property. We put a sign out "please keep your dog off our property." We do not own a dog and do not want a dog on our lawn after spending thousands for landscaping. We just prefer not to own a dog now in our life because we are just so busy in the villages!! we don't have time and really don't want the responsibility of a dog. But i do have many opinions on dogs. If you own a dog, keep the dog on your property not ours!! pick up of course thats a no-brainer. and when we come to visit you PLEASE put your dog away. you may love your dog but i've gotten jumped on by dogs, scratched by dogs and hair all over my new clothes. we love to visit friends, but sometimes it's hard when they dont' know to put their animals away. We owned dogs in the past and of course we all had fences so we kept our dogs in our own yards or walked to woods. The dog park is a great place for you to take your dog or a courtyard villa as others mentioned is a great idea. Consideraton of others is really the key. we always put our dog away when we had company as we understood others may not want a dog jumping up on them or be a dog lover. We were always considerate. we're glad we did not buy an end piece of property as we know quite a few people who have problems with dog walkers letting the dogs use their property as their personal bathrooms. It's just this simple - you may love your dog but don't infringe on others who don't own a dog or want one. If we all respect each other, we can get along and live peacefully.
