Did I just meet a Morse family member?

While coming down the 466 Multi-Modal Path, I saw a golf cart with a young couple and young children (5 & 7?) parked at the stop sign at 466 (the one coming out of Bridgeport).

Thinking they were waiting to take their cart out on 466, noticing that they were young (visiting parents/grandparents?), that there were two young children in the seat, guessing they were probably lost and also noticing that it didn’t even have a license plate for a street legal car, I chose to veer over to them to keep them from having a disaster.

I said “excuse me, but golf carts are not allowed on that road and it can be very dangerous.”

The guy looks over and says “my horse is in the barn over there” (pointing to the barns on the Morse’s property across 466).

I then said… “as long as you know it’s illegal and very dangerous crossing this road, the choice is yours.”

I then got back on the MMP and went on my way.

Should I even have bothered to stop?

Waiting for what I predict will be some interesting responses.

Could be an employee of the Morses. There must be a lot of people involved in keeping up that property.

ukbill70 05-15-2016 03:09 PM

And which, soon to be ex , officer is going to give them a ticket ?.

No kidding. It's hard to believe there are people naive enough to believe that people with money, power and influence don't get out of tickets because of who they are.

That's entirely possible, but to be in your late-20's to early-30's and have your own horse boarded at the Morse's, you have to be a pretty well paid employee.

I've been told that the house on the very corner next to 466, that is just left of the #7 green on Laurel Valley, is a guest house for the Morse's friends and relatives who live elsewhere and that was my thought on where they were coming from.

Jima64 05-15-2016 04:03 PM

Nice gesture.

That was a very polite way of offering info to someone that could possibly be lost or confused. I also am watching the responses.

That is not correct.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure as soon as they started dropping names any cop would back off pretty quickly.

My main concern was having a cart with small kids trying to cross a divided highway where people often drive 50+ mph.

Not to mention that the vegetation in the median and the curve to the west, make for poor sight distances.

Poor sight distances + poor decision making = bad outcomes sometimes.

manaboutown 05-15-2016 04:07 PM

IMHO it was nice of the OP to stop, particularly with children in the cart. One never knows. Such acts can and do save lives.

Yeah, I'm sure that's never happened.

My first time here I almost drove out on a few of the roads where non-street legal carts are not allowed and would have loved to cross 466 up around Walgreens to save time to Southern Trace, but went the long way around of course.

I was just thinking that maybe they were lost and was trying to help them avoid a disaster (especially with little kids aboard).

Pretty predictable so far. :p

And it's just as naive...and a lot more cynical...to believe that people with money, power and influence always get out of tickets because of who they are.

Area in there not all morse family

There are other owners not related to the Morse that live in that area also. Lord Lyle for one. He keeps polo ponies and has his own polo field.

I didn't mean to imply the whole area was Morse related folks, just that one house.

That was told to me by a top salesman for the Morse's 10 years ago and who has been here for almost 20 years now.

Whether it still belongs to them, I have no idea.

Unless he is 30'ish with two small kids, it could have been relatives of his then.

Although, the guy did say "my horse."

Thanks for the info.

With all due respect, I don't think he was saying 'all' or 'always.'

But I think most of us know that people with high profiles and lots of power/money in small communities, often get special treatment.

Actually, I don't see, so far, that there have been any negative responses to what you did.

What you did was the right thing to do. Don't let anyone tell you any different.

golf2140 05-15-2016 04:54 PM

Don't they board the polo ponies in that area.

The post I replied to was in reply to a post saying "which, soon to be ex , officer is going to give them a ticket ?" That says to me there are no police officers who will stand up for the law in that situation and keep their job.

That strong implies that there are none and that is very cynical. I stand by my reply.

As my original post stated, that was the end of it.

redwitch 05-15-2016 05:13 PM

My guess would be a visiting polo player or guest. I can't imagine anyone who has lived here any amount of time being foolish enough to cross 466 in a golf cart without at least a traffic light to stop traffic (have seen a few carts cross that way in the past and the carts weren't street legal).

As to not having seen anyone try to cross there previously doesn't mean someone won't try it now or sometime in the future. I'm willing to bet that if you can think of a stupid move someone at some point has or will try it and that includes crossing 466 in a golf cart with children on board.

I can't imagine not stopping and trying to dissuade someone from making such a foolish move. Kudos for trying to help.

First of all, I didn't quote you. I simply responded to what you said in reply to another post. But just for fun...

Here is your original remark, preceded by the quote you were responding to. Those are what I was responding to. I look forward to your explanation of how it does not equate to what I said in my post...

You did a very nice thing.

Villager Joyce 05-16-2016 07:34 AM

I mean so disrespect, but what diff does it make if they were members of the morse family? Would you have handled the situation differently?

No, I would have done the exact same thing regardless of whom it might have been.

My question, and this thread, was based primarily on the fact that the person said his horse was in the barn on the Morse's private property across 466.

As has been pointed out, it could have been a polo player or anyone else for that matter.
