Windows 10 – – help!
 

Windows 10 downloaded to my laptop yesterday and I am not happy! I liked Windows 7.

What makes it worse is I tried to open Excel to no avail. It only opens Excel for a second. I can see my documents and then they disappear. The same thing happens with Outlook. I purchased Office 2013 a while back because I did not want to pay for an annual subscription to Office 365. But now, I can't access Excel or Outlook and I really need to do some Excel spreadsheets! How do I get Office 2013 back?

You can download free program "TakeOwnership" I had the problem that Win10 made all my files "read only". Installed takeownership, installed it, right click on the folder. clicked takeownership, PROBLEM SOLVED. Good Luck

I think you are looking for something called Windows 10 which has been discussed in another post, but has disappeared. I am also being bothered with continual upgrades so this morning did a search and came up with this WARNING: Your Computer May Upgrade to Windows 10 Without Your Permission

I would think that when Windows created a OS Win10 that did not permit Windows programs like the Office programs to work, that Windows would have created a download update to fix the flaw. More proof I do not know what I am talking about, My main computer is Windows 8 not 8.1 and it will stay that way. No “do you want 10 free, do you, do you”.

I did go from 7 to 10 on a lap top that I use only for the internet and no problem. No problem if I don't count the combined time do download 10 and an updated that came weeks later, a total of maybe 5 hours to complete.

Windows 10 tried to download to my laptop yesterday, but I was able to stop it. I then ran a utility called Never10, and am now safe and sticking with my Windows 7 Home Premium.

I have never seen that particular issue with W10 after hundreds of updates - so, there may be something more to it. You can however go back to 7 very easily as long as you are less than 30 days into 10.

As for the "Never 7" utility...NOTHING on the internet is free...NOTHING.

Go to Settings > Update & security > Recovery and selecting either Go back to Windows 7 or 8 depending on which one you had.

It is far faster and cleaner to go to a restore point. But, that does work (there will be some bad icons left behind).

OK, first you still have all your office programs and files after being upgraded to Windows 10. The issue may be that the icons you used to use to access the programs are no longer valid. You can re create the icons easily by going to C:\program files\Microsoft Office 15\Root\Office15 Scroll down until you find the program you are looking for, excel outlook word ect, and then right click on the file, a menu will pop up and you can then choose create shortcut. This is bad behavior by Microsoft - updating without explicit permission to do so. Microsoft is most likely trying to pad the number of Windows 10 installations and increase the telemetry they collect from you. You apparently have 30 days to rollback Window 10 to what you previously had installed. Corporate users would never allow this to happen and you shouldn't either. Upgrade if and when it makes sense for you, not Microsoft, to do so. I work for a computer manufacturer and if we tried this on our customers the results would not be favorable.

They DID agree in their EULA...and No, it is NOT forced into any Domain based system, unless you are logged on as a "Local Administrator" (not common). Dont let the facts get into the way of conjecture. BITS only does what is has been instructed to do...sometime in the past, as part of an Update the end user got the EULA and that is that. They do not like the unforeseen consequences? Possibly they should have read what they were agreeing to.

That said, the OP should see if she has a Restore Point from any date prior to the W10 install and use that. As I said, it is FAR cleaner than an "uninstall"

Funny. Why you would try to defend this sort of egregious behavior is beyond me. Most (all) people don't read the boilerplate so don't try to fall back on that sorry excuse for their bad behavior. They are inconveniencing their customers for their own gain - no conjecture there.

What exactly is the "gain" Microsoft is going to see? Some need more memory or an HDD (MSFT does not sell hardware). Some need a new computer (again, MSFT does not sell hardware). I am failing to see where it is exactly they "gain". PLUS, if you READ the install information it is not at all hard to turn off the telemetry stuff, Cortina and the other bloatware (then again, this required about thirty seconds of reading).

It is so funny that so many people are complaining - and most do not even know what they are complaining about. Quite simply, they do not like "change". Simply, unforeseen consequences. .

Do you still have your Office Media (DVD's)? There never was a forces reason to go to 365 (but it does make a TON of sense, even more so with OneDrive).

If not, I can get you a download link for any version of Office you would like (from TechNet.microsoft.com).

What you think customers like or don't like is irrelevant. The gain, as I already pointed out, is to pad the number of installs and increase their telemetry. Most people will be unaware of the fact that Windows 10 will increase the amount of telemetry collected and therefore unaware that they can turn it off. This is clearly what Microsoft is counting on. The fact that it breaks functionality for some people is apparently no concern. The very definition of bad customer service. Please stop trying to defend this sort of behavior - nobody else pulls this crap.

LOL - that my friend is laughable. Certainly not Google/Android/Chrome. Not Apple. Not your car insurance company with their systems that plug into your cars diagnostic port. Never OnStar...your cell phone company would not do that either...or Comcast....

Really? Apple doesn't upgrade the OS on my Mac without my explicit permission. Apple doesn't upgrade IOS on my iPhone without my explicit permission. Apple doesn't upgrade IOS on my iPad without my explicit permission. My company doesn't upgrade firmware or OS levels without our customer's permission. Linux distros for desktop systems don't upgrade without user permissions. My insurance company doesn't plug anything into my OBD port. Come back to reality. Onstar is for a car, not a home computer. If you want to drift off topic start another thread about OnStar on cars.

Boy, everyone seems to go off course here. The OP wants help on her Office programs! I did a search and Microsoft does have an update for Office 2013 that resolves many problems with going from Win 7 to Win 10 and Office 2013.

I have an Office 2013 Media kit already burnt for her (all updates, just downloaded it). All she needs is to say so and I can get it to her. :coolsmiley:

And, if she was to type "System Restore" in a search Window she can go back a few days (much cleaner than "Uninstall")

I was recently surprised with a Win10 upgrade. My Microsoft Word and Excel still work. All my files are readable and changeable. I have Office 2013. So far, I have had no issues with Win10, so I guess I am not troubled by their "intrusion" into my computer.

As a EE who spent his career making computers solve complex problems using punch cards on Mainframes, then terminals on the mainframes and some PC's, I take umbrag with that comment against us Computer "geeks".

Did you upgrade Office. Now Microsoft leases Office currently 2016. If you have problems go to the Computer ++ club, they spend most time on Win10, some of the moderators were Beta testers for Win10. I have had problems with my old Office Outlook and forced to use Mail, lost my EMAIL that came on recent trip. Right now have too many other pressing tasks to do, in between going in the pool, that I will address that later.

I hope the moderators don't delete the above contentious posts. They are helping to educate us non techies. My 2-yr old Dell came with Windows 8, which I immediately upgraded to 8.1. Now I've transitioned from 8.1 to 10 and don't see much difference yet. Just wondering if the leap from Windows 7 to 10 is too much for the Microsoft program to handle without creating problems.

You are correct that going from 8.1 to 10 is about seamless in how the system looks. At the end of the day, the way it looks is the biggest change (on top of some functionality that only computer geeks would notice).

I have been PM for the roll out to 10 from 7 for hundreds of systems and seen very few issues. Never anything with Office of any flavor (right down to Office 2003).

Only if you subscribe to 365. Or, you can simply purchase the software.

I downloaded Never Win 10 but didn't run it until this afternoon when Windows 10 attempted began play a tug a war with me and my laptop. I immediately ran Never 10. I then went to my desktop same thing so I was in a race with Win 10 upgrade minimizing screens so I could continue on with the Never 10 run.

A corporation plans well beyond 10 years windows 10 is today's platform for something down the road?

I have windows 7 and my information is arranged to my liking. Its my understanding that Win 7 help ends 20220. Well before 2020 I am certain to be purchasing another computer. My plans call for an apple next time. I'm sick of the hassle and the concerns about viruses

Sooner or later Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 7 then you will need to upgrade anyway.

Thank you so much for your offer. I'm only going to be here for a few more days and I'm going a little crazy getting my house set up.

Besides Outlook, I can't open two games (solitaire and Freecell) and this morning I couldn't get into Sam's Club credit. They said it was a glitch on my end!

If I go to system restore in my windows 7, it says I can't restore because I have not designated any restore points (dates). It's not as easy as it was with windows XP, which let you restore to several dates in the past that were automatically set. Or I don't have some setting correct, or whatever. In any case, I doubt Sable would have any restore points set up either...?

My computer just did an auto update to Win 10 from Win 7. I have been putting it off but when the auto update started I decided to let it install.
With Win 10 I have notice that things work a LOT faster than before. So far I like it.

Just check all my Excel docs and they opened up fine. I am running Excel 2007 ver.

There is a way to revert to Win 7 from Win 10 but you should stay on Win 10 for a bit. It really is a much better operating system and Win 7 is being phased out and will no longer be supported which opens it up to hacks and virus attacks.

Solitare and Freecell are gone from 10 and you can download them from the App store (Very apple esqe).

If you are in Edge for the internet - yep, not shocking you cant get into a secure site. It is easy to turn IE back on or change your default to Firefox or Chrome.

Still doesn't give me valid reasons to upgrade a 4 yr. old laptop, where everything for me, works fine. My OS will be supported for as long as I'll have it, 2020. My computer is plenty fast.
When I get a touch screen, I'll consider Win 10, which the OS is designed for.
Although the way Microsoft is doing the " almost forced" rollout, I'll consider going back to a Mac OS.

If you are on a portable, touch is cool. I find that for most people the touch screens is an aggravation point. Even more so in a healthcare environment where someone (CNA or RN) has to clean the darn thing after most every PT. I have touch on one of my systems (in my kitchen). I never touch the thing because then I have to clean it.
