What was your major?

By popular demand, actually it was only uujudy who demanded, here is a place to let us know your major in college, or what you studied in tech school, or what trade you trained for. You know what we're after.

And let's go a step further. What ended up being your work field, profession or trade?

I majored chemistry. Ultimately no degree.

Ended up as a newspaper editor, then computer systems analyst.

villages07 01-18-2009 09:53 PM

OK, I'll play. First, NOT an English major.

Math major

Worked in the computer field....mainframe programmer then systems analyst then project manager then program manager then retired (yippee!!!)

ConeyIsBabe 01-18-2009 09:55 PM

Secretary

Only a high school graduate with training as a secretary, but it supported me as a single mom living in one of the most upscale cities in Miami-Dade County.

I've worked for several "distinguished" bosses.... one was the head of the UTD schoolteacher's union, another was a famous local baseball coach for the University of Miami, another was a very honored meteorologist at RSMAS University of Miami and my last job was sec'y to local Chiefs of Police

I have a bachelor degree in business administration, and worked in the retail industry. I was a store manager for many years, buyer for a chain of stores, merchandise manager for a chain of superstores, and I also owned my own store. I eventually went to the other side and worked as a sales rep calling on retail accounts.

k2at 01-18-2009 10:27 PM

Doctorate in Public Administration. Worked as an administrator for the State of New Jersey and in that capacity for 40 years, I met most of the crooked politicians from the Governor's office, down.

chelsea24 01-18-2009 10:39 PM

Me and Sarah, You betcha!

I majored in Journalism and I still can't spell and ended up working as copywriter, then Creative Head for a large Ad Agency in Chicago. Advertising is where you throw Grammar rules completely out the window!

Does Wonder Bread really help build your body 12 ways??? I'll never tell!

Hey, that was way before my time! ;)

TallerTrees 01-18-2009 10:41 PM

English major. Law school.

chachacha 01-18-2009 10:45 PM

redwitch 01-18-2009 10:57 PM

Psychology (child), English (Shakespeare) minor. I did put my degree to good use -- I worked as a legal secretary for 30+ years.

Julie 01-18-2009 11:01 PM

I bet I can top on who earned their degree the latest... I received my BS in Biology, Ecology and Conservation option, June 2008!

I am currently working on a term field study testing the effects of California red-legged frog migration through man-made culverts. I'm also in the process of looking into some habitat restoration projects.

My biggest concern about moving to TV is whether I will be able to find any type of outdoor biology work in the area. I really just got started and am not ready to give up. However, my DH is retired and ready to move NOW!

One of our friends told me I was the luckiest person he knew since it appears I may go straight from earning a college degree right into retirement. ;)

Just Susan 01-18-2009 11:02 PM

I had a double major...Architectural Design and Construction Management. Was a Kitchen & Bath Designer for 20+ years. Then I retired, started volunteering, they hired me and now I am a Life Coach teaching self-esteem in a treatment center for drug & alcohol addicted women.

Freeda 01-18-2009 11:29 PM

I was a music education major in college. Then went to law school and practiced law for 31 years. In 2003 I became associated with Usana Health Sciences, and transitioned out of law to help people build their own economic stimulus packages.

scottke 01-19-2009 06:13 AM

First earned an Associates degree in business and then after raising my children finished my bachelors degree in Liberal Studies majoring in Communications with a cetification in Public Relations. BS in Business Admin, then MS in Systems Management.

14 years in the military with specialities in telecommunications and computers. Got out and went to work for a large insurance company in their computer department but stayed in the Reserves.

When I got my BS, I had been taking ROTC so I got commissioned into the Army. While stationed in Hawaii, I earned my MS degree at Army expense.

All my life I've done volunteer work in my community, primarily as a volunteer Firefighter (27 years) and a volunteer Emergency Medical Technician. I was a state certified instructor for both EMS and Firefighting and taught many classes in my home state. Still doing volunteer work today in TV - Hospital Auxiliary, CERT, Seniors Vs Crime and for the DAV.

You can hold the title for a little bit but I'll get my nursing degree in April 2009 (knock on some wood)!

Back in the seventies I was a computer science major - I have worked in that field since then. I hope to retiree from that by the end of this year and then become a critical care nurse if the market permits.

Blondie 01-19-2009 07:54 AM

Doctorate in Psychology, MS in Special Education, and BS in Psychology.......
I know this may sound hokey to some, but my most valued degree was an MRS to my hubby...I sure wish he were here to enjoy TV with me. :pepper2:

BUC 01-19-2009 08:26 AM

I spent over 20 years in the Navy (SEABEES) while serving I got my degree in Construction Management. I retired from Seabees in 1990, and went to work for an engineering firm managing Road and Bridge projects.

bogart 01-19-2009 09:40 AM

I graduated many years ago from the University of New Mexico with a BS in pharmacy.
I was the only female in my class --- now the women outnumber the men. I was a soda
clerk/druggist in Western Kansas (again the only female) for a few years before transitioning to hospital pharmacy and Colorado. After 33 years as director of pharmacy in a small hospital, I retired.......and am enjoying my latest career (retirement) immensely.

jobs for Julie

Julie:
My first thought was the Agricultural Extension service.
The University of Central Florida, the University of Florida at Gainsville and Stetson University are all within a doable commute. Check out the Department of Natural Resourses, the Florida Dept of Environmental Services, The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission , the USFish and Wildlife Commission and the Florida Department of Recreation and Parks but again, I think the Florida Environmental and Extension Service would be the best bet. There are Community Colleges in each County in Florida as well. Google each of these and you'll see the possibilities.

MSNPA 01-19-2009 01:16 PM

Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education from Penn State, however spent my entire career in and retired from the Federal Government - Supervisory Logistical Management.

uujudy 01-19-2009 10:28 PM

Art major with minor in Genetics. Didn't find the anthropology department (where I should have been all along) until it was time to graduate.

My daughter's college counselor in HS had a fun exercise for the parents called "Name the Major." He presented us with a list of important people and a multiple choice list of their possible majors. Almost none of them had a career that had anything to do with their college majors -- kind of like this forum.
