GPS in the Villages

Just found out that MapQuest now recognizes addresses all the way down to 466A, including interior addresses off Odell Circle. It found our address on Nehaul Terrace in Hadley, this is a first. It shows MapQuest 2009 (Navtec). My Garmin Nuvi still has only 2008 maps so I can't judge if the 2009 maps for it will work as well. Any Garmin owners with the 2009 map updates?

2009? Not sure they are available yet for Garmins.

The latest version for Garmin is 2009 and I have had my copy since at least July. The next version will be 2010 and usually comes out around May or June. The 2009 version does NOT have the newer sections down at the south end.

Garmin also gets their maps from NavTec so one would assume that if the southern sections of TV would be in the next update.

Oh well, neither Mapquest or Garmin recognize my address, and the home was built in the 50's!
To make it even more strange, Google Maps knows exactly where I live.
Go figure.

wdwduo 02-03-2009 09:22 AM

Drat, thought I'd finally be able to get the Garmin to work right. I guess I'll have to wait for the 2010 maps. Thanks for the responses.

I have a 2008 Nissan Altima that came with the GPS system installed...I can't get it to recognize any address in the villages....any suggestions????
Thanks...Charlene

We visited TV for a month last year, and will be on our way down again this Friday. For those of you with the Garmin's, what you need to do is plug in Lady Lake (with your requested address) instead of The Villages, it will work fine.

TerSul 02-04-2009 12:39 PM

Gps

I spoke to Garmin about this problem and they told me to wait until at least April before The Villages is updated...

susanneA 02-04-2009 06:40 PM

How about Tom Tom's

I have a Tom Tom and I am coming down next week... All of you are talking about Garmins.... Do you know if other GPS systems work in the Villages

My current TOM TOM does not recognize and streets south of 466. It will get you to SS with no problem.

UPDATE: Just did an update of the maps on our Tom Tom. It now recognizes streets all the way into the Keystone Villas in Hadley. Previous maps dropped out on Odell Circle. Haven't looked out to the west or southwest but Hadely's now on the grid.

Your car dealer should be able to help you get an update. I have an Acura and there is a DVD in the trunk with all the information stored on it. For just a few hundred dollars you can get a new one. ;)

Don H 03-27-2009 08:56 AM

WDWDUO, How much did it cost to update your maps from TomTom? We have one (really like it btw) but we're under the impression it costs about $50 or so.

wdwduo 03-27-2009 09:18 AM

For DonH:
Tom Tom just introduced a quarterly update program, $39.00 for the year.
The catch is you have to be up to date to start. The upside was the initial map update only cost $19.95, which is way below the normal cost. It worked out for us.

Don H 03-27-2009 01:33 PM

Thanks ... I'll look into that. Sounds like a plan. :-)

Suzanne,

I have a TomTom as well. It works for some areas - not for others. Mine is about 18 months old. I looked into updating hte maps and the price was about 70 pounds (i.e. about $140). You could but a new one for just a bit more.

I gave my son-in-law a Magellan for Christmas - their's has most of the new streets (like ours Heath Springs) but not our house number.

Don H 03-27-2009 04:05 PM

I just updated the TomTom map US & Canada. Mine was way behind in updates and in order to get the latest update I had to install the previous updates. It all came to $79. I'll probably go for a yearly subscription for $39.

In the browse map feature I see that pretty much all of The Villages is covered. It's good down to 466A. It's good toward the west to Bailey. Also, I notice that Creekside is not there since it's relatively new. I was curious since we stayed there during our Lifestyle visit. All in all it covers alot of The Villages so I'm satisfied.

jkomoros 03-27-2009 07:37 PM

We have a Garmin that has our location on a new street off of Odell Circle. I just asked my husband how he did it, and he thinks he went to our house, then pressed "Mark Location." All I know is, I can go to saved location for my Villages Address, and my Garmin directs me the whole way, so I know it can be done.

rsetterlund 03-29-2009 11:56 AM

On the Garmin web site you can look at the new maps before purchasing. I did that and found that Hemingway was not included yet, so did not purchase. But I did see where there is not a 2009-1 map, have not tested that one yet.

under55 03-29-2009 01:01 PM

I have a Garmin and I just used a USB cord and the update was free from the web site.

Thanks Don. I'll check it out again. Maybe they woke up and realized that if they would charge a reasonable price, that people would upgrade.

Don H 03-29-2009 08:40 PM

From what Under55 said, it looks like I should have gotten a Garmin. Free map updates? Can't beat that! :undecided:

You should be able to buy an update from a Nissan dealer or google it! On a Lexus the update costs $450. I passed on that one.

Yoda 03-30-2009 09:16 PM

Just curious

I haven't seen anyone mention Magellan. Doesn't anyone use one?

Yoda

handieman 03-30-2009 11:05 PM

My Tom Tom also does not recognize south of 466. I was told that all the manufacturers use information from NavTec, so possibly this year will be the update we are all waiting for.

I use Magellan and have not done an update. Would like to hear from someone who has.

under55,

What model Garmin do you have that you were able to d/load software for free?

My hand held Garmin Vista GPS unit is free but my street directory Nuvi 200W software comes at a price.

JoeB1 03-31-2009 11:15 AM

Garmin updates

I have a Nuvi 660 and a Vista from garmin. Although you can connect the Nuvi to your computer and update from the Automated Garmin Update software, this only provides updates to your software and operating system. I assumed when I got the device and started "updating" that it would update the maps also. Then I saw yearly Map Updates for sale and wondered. So Garmin puts out an updated Map each year that costs about $69.00. If you just use the online updater, you can stay current with the various aspects of your devices' working software (i.e. traffic warnings, voices [German update, Romanian etc] and new colors or types of vehicles [motrocycles, monster trucks]). That does not update your maps. For that you need to purchase a map update CD and download the updated map to your device.
I have the 2008 and was in TV in February and it worked well. I did not use it to navigate the various streets as I was trying to do that on my own. It did get me there from Orlando without any problems.

under55 03-31-2009 04:36 PM

I just put in my serial number and clicked on map updates it didn't cost anything. I have the nuvi 200. And it did up date my maps for free.

Don H 03-31-2009 04:37 PM

Handieman, the latest TomTom update gets you down to 466A and most of the Villages south of LSL. The update and the subscription was about $79 which covers the US & Can. I think less expensive versions cover just the US or the Southeast. The update can be done online. A bit expensive though.

F16 1UB 04-01-2009 06:32 AM

What web site did you go to???

Garmin site shows Lifetime update for my Nuvi 200 for $119.99 with up to 4 d/loads per yr or 1 time update for $69.99 & yes credit cards accepted.

Did you get this free from another site?

under55 04-01-2009 12:52 PM

Nope that is the site I used. I just clicked on the map update and plugged in the USB cord and did the download. I then checked for a road that was not in it before that and it was there.

under55 04-01-2009 12:53 PM

I just looked at the site and it has two things you can click on.

1. Buy Maps
2. Update Maps

I did the update maps.
