Blown Away
A few hours ago I was driving on BV at 33 mph and a golf cart on the MMP passed me. Not a LSV, no tags, just what appeared to be a standard Yamaha cart. I caught up and paced this "golf cart" at 39 mph!!!!. I didn't know it was even possible to modify it to go that fast--turbo charged??? jet fuel????redesigned transmission??? Modified engine????? There were 2 kids about 5-7 years old in the front seat with grampa. I'm no mechanical engineer, but I'm sure the structure/chassis of these carts are not built for that speed, they cannot handle all that well at 39, and the injury potential has to be huge. What are some people thinking????

Tell me it wouldn't have been funny if the Police stopped you for speeding.

In the thread on Child Endangerment In A Cart, I just posted about having license plates on carts being a good way of identifying lawbreakers. Your posting reinforces that idea! I wonder if Gramps has full coverage on that cart in case of an accident - but - Gramps may find out the hard way the insurance may not pay for carts that have been modified to go over the legal speed of 20 mph. |
I have been passed by a cart on Pinellas Place, when the GPS stated I was going 30.5 mph, I am sure the cart was going 35.
Gears and large tires will probably get that speed, and possibly resetting the governor. |
That's cool, wish I knew how he did it so I can get mine going that fast. :gc:

If you want to discuss slow drivers in the left lane on Interstates, I'm with you. But residential streets are different. Is the speed limit on Enrique Dr. 30 or just 25? I think his point was not that he was going too slow, but that the cart was going way too fast. |

I just got in from the store, one of the stops was the new Steinmark in the Kohl's Shopping Center behind the McDonalds. Somebody came in and said there was a man outside in a golf cart lost. That shopping center is across Rolling Acres Rd., no regular carts are allowed.
He had a beautiful red & black Yamaha with a black Sleek Enclosure and red/black Ultimate Seats, SS Wheels, but I didn't see a license plate. What was amazing was the driver must of been in his 80's and said he was trying to get to the hospital, I could just imagine him driving across Rolling Acres Road. He said he had been lost for 4 ro 5 hours. One of the store employees had him call someone on his cellphone and they explained the situation and gave directions for someone to come pick him up. I don't know how they'll get his cart home unless he calls a cart tow service. |
Gas golf cart speed is controlled by governed engine RPM. Take the governor out of the system and the cart will accelerate till torque of the engine runs out or the engine comes apart. 40 to 45 mph can reasonable obtained from gas golf cart with 13hp plus engine with larger tires.
Most of us with common sense will not tamper with governor and risk unsafe condition or braking the law.:gc: |
I strongly suspect the person who owns this record breaking golf cart that can leap tall buildings... does not live in The Villages. that's my story and I am sticking to it.

5.9.1 - Driving Too Slowly is also Against the Law Drive with the flow of traffic (within the speed limit). You should not drive so slowly that you block other vehicles moving at normal, safe speeds. When driving slower than the flow of traffic, keep right so others may safely pass. You can be issued a ticket for driving too slowly. When the posted speed limit is 70 mph, the minimum speed limit is 50 mph. |
Speed and other infractions are so common. It is sad that there are so many speeders, people running the stop signs in carts and running the red lights in cars.
But Hey look at the TV ads, zoom zoom zoom, skid, skid, hey lets have fun. A cart and a car are supposed to be mainly for transportation, some folks they are on the Daytona or Indianapolis Speedways. Too bad the local police are so easy on all of this. |
I fully intend to soup up my cart and exceed the speed limits often.
Why, you might ask. Well, I have two left feet, so line dancing is out. Bad knees rule out cycling. Allergies prohibit me from owning a dog and I don't go to the squares, so seat saving in not in my cards. Raking bunkers, repairing pitch marks, and playing at a reasonable pace have become instinctive in my 63 years of golfing. My personal tastes are in line with lawn ornament prohibitions and I am satisfied with the neutral colors of my home exterior. Having said the above, I still have the right to be as arrogant as anyone else and feel the need to exercise said right. Hot rodding my golf cart seems to be the only behavior available to me to fulfill my need so, vroom..vroom. I wonder if a Harley engine would be overkill. |

My cart is capable of 30+ MPH but the handling is very dangerous at the higher speed only the foolish drive them that fast I drive in the 20/22 MPH range, I have speedometer and most carts I find will run 22/23 MPH Those street legals running in traffic are much more scary to me with driving abilities displayed by many driving cars in The Villages.

In case you don't know if your cart exceeds 20 mph and you get stopped by the police, which is possible, you don't get a speeding ticket. What you get is a low level class felony ticket. The reason is that anything over 20 mph requires being licensed by the state like a LSV. There is a mandatory court appearance with some significant fines as well as being required to get the cart fixed to not exceed 20 mph. Costs usually run well over $1,000 and you end up with a felony record. Not really worth it. Also carts tend to have a high center of gravity which means they are more easily tipped over and the faster you go the more likely you may tip over if you hit a curb or turn too tightly.

I have a friend that got stopped in his golf cart on Morse Blvd. north of 466. He got fined $500.00 for speeding in an unregistered vehicle and $100.00 for every mile over the speed limit. I don't know how fast he was actually going and if they considered 20 as the legal speed limit but he got fined $800.00 plus court charge and he had to go to a driving school.

Speed is the norm so it seems. Go to Daytona, Go to the 500, wow speed we love it and we ignore the dangers and there is always the speed demon who has to be the show off. When I ordered my cart, in writing they had to certify, it would not exceed 20 mph. And that is fine and adequate. We are frequently passed at great speeds by those who are careless. It is very common. When does anyone in the Villages, police or sheriff give a ticket? Well not often enough, that is for sure. At just 30 mph you are moving at 44 feet per second, speed is dangerous, but those who love it need it so it seems. We really need enforcement, the officials are there but when will they do their jobs? Unfortunately, we need a major wreck, people maimed, kids killed. The American way is look the other way until the disaster strikes. Sad, very Sad. I do expect to get replies, and an attack my viewpoint by those who love speed.

I agree with you, in the context of golf carts. There is a time and place for everything, including speed. 30 mph IS dangerous, IN A GOLF CART designed for 15-20 mph. 30 mph in a M1A1 Abrams tank is pretty safe. It's all relative. 39 mph in a golf cart on a MMP with some blind curves, shared by cyclists and pedestrians is absurd. 45-50 mph in a car down Hillsborough or Pinellas, which happens quite often, is equally absurd. 45-50 mph on I-75 will get you run off the road, especially if you park yourself in the left lane. Personally, I find the speed limits in TV to be reasonable, but driving is more than a speedometer---take your surroundings into consideration and expect the other person on the road to do the stupidest thing imaginable because they often do just that. |
Probably same people that do not have seat belts. Quickest way to slow down from those speeds is to hit a tree. Even from 20 mph the seat breaks loose and flys forward, passenger kisses the windshield and driver ends up somewhere after bouncing off the steering wheel. I came across this as EMT was taking him away and police were picking up the pieces.

He probably changed engines, there are kits out there for that. The problem with going fast is the short wheel base, too fast and they will start to hop losing control

While riding in my Cadillac........... Beep beep, beep beep... his horn went beep beep beep........
|
I have been passed several times by golf carts while driving mine and I was going as fast as mine would go (definitely not even 33 MPH) and it's quite un-nerving. I thought we were all retired and slowing it down! I guess not
