I thought that device was supposed to *prevent* burglaries - no? Why didn't your friends answer the 'doorbell'? $25 off a device that does not work does not sound like a very good deal to me? What am I missing?

Perhaps they saw the picture of the person ringing the bell and just didn't want to deal with an apparent solicitor.

Perhaps the burglar didn't ring the doorbell but just came within the range of the motion detector. This produces a much quieter alert which might have been missed.

Perhaps the owner was on the phone and didn't want to interrupt the call to respond to the doorbell.

Perhaps they answered the ring but their conversation with the burglar made him believe that they weren't actually home.

I am not defending the system. I have one and it doesn't work well. Frequently there is a long delay after the ringing of the doorbell before the system becomes active, and the person at the front door has left before the camera and intercom becomes active.

I had a ring today and the camera never came on. The person left. A few minutes later I did a playback and discovered that I had a photo of the person. Go figure.

Note that you must attach your unit to power by replacing your existing push button, OR periodically recharge the unit by plugging it in to your computer. Also, to save the pictures to the Cloud you pay a separate annual fee.

You may perceive that I am not happy with mine, but you might have a different experience.

Consider alternatives, particularly multiple camera security systems.

I'm curious as to how you think, what what seems to be basically a recording device, could actually *prevent* a burglary? :confused:

Unfortunately, it seems as though some choose to "cheap out" when it comes to their home security. Yes, we all saw the smiling woman burglar suspect but was she caught?

Why not get a monitored home security system? Arm it whenever you leave the house. A burglar will not stay in a house with a 125 db alarm sounding and knowing the police have been called.

Don't make it easy by having jewelry and money in the usual places, either.

Sure, it costs a little money for the system and monitoring but it does work better than the video doorbell in keeping the burglar out of the house.

All good points in the below replies. The Ring video doorbell will not prevent someone getting in your home that wants to steal something. And a home alarm system is probably the best in deterring burglaries. But if you are not at home and you didn't set your alarm, the Ring Video doorbell is another tool to see activity going on around your home/front door.

60 minutes compared three products including this one. I am sure you can Google the results. After watching I would go with a camera. Since these doorbells are toted on TV, and very recognizable, the person just need to pull down a hat, wear a hood, or just turn away from the door bell so the face is not visible.

Perhaps you would not be curious if you read the hype on the Ring homepage and watched the television ads. That should explain it for ya!

But the advertisements push the fact that it connects to your smart phone wherever you are!

If someone is home they can respond to the doorbell and not need the Ring app.

When a friend mentioned the Ring app to us some time ago we checked it out and had the same feelings as yours. So we never gave up our alarm/video system that's monitored for us 24/7/365.

I suspect the reason some villagers don’t have a monitored system is cost. Many in TV are on a fixed income. I pay $210/yr for monitoring here in WA, what is it in TV? When the ring doorbell first came out I read the reviews, they were not good. Most complained it was slow or didn’t work at all. A message would get to your smartphone 5-10 mins after the bell is rung, or not at all. Maybe there have been improvements in later generations of the unit. I have regular hard-wired cameras. When the time comes to move south I’ll look into a reputable security company and do regular cameras again. My iphone doesn’t alert me instantly but it’s less than a minute.

The ring doorbell, or any camera, isn’t going to stop a burglary but it might get the perps caught. And, through the plea bargain process, maybe get some of your stuff back.

Any 55+ community is a ripe target for scum. TV being the largest 55+ comm. makes it the prime target for scum. We all need to be very vigilant.

Villagers generally do not have a tough time paying for what they want. Go out to dinner one less time a month to pay for the security monitoring. No problem.

Arm the system anytime you leave!

I want burglars kept out of my house! The video doorbell will not do that. A camera system will not do that. A Smith & Wesson will not do that when I am away. Best chance is the VERY LOUD alarm and the burglar knowing the Sheriff will arrive very soon.

I wonder why they did not just take the device off the wall and take it with them as they departed??? Just wondering.

The video is stored in the cloud. Taking the device would have no effect.

Especially given the number of forced entries when people are actually home.

But hey, to each their own.

I wonder how long it will take for the thief to stop ringing doorbells. I'm thinking a couple of more posts in the paper should alert them to knocking....

I have always thought that the TV commercials for the ring doorbell are insulting. The lady, who is obviously not home, tells the potential burglar that she is bathing the children. Are they encouraging people to lie? Any burglar with half a brain would easily figure out how the ring doorbell works and know to bypass it, or worse, use it to their advantage.

I wasn't aware of that.

OK, here is my question: How did you determine the users had "great results"?

Did they have statistically fewer burglaries?

Or does the term "great results" mean that you got paid for doing the work? Nuthin wrong with making money.

Why not just get ADT. Post the sign. Set the alarm when leaving and have some peace of mind.

If you have or have not a security system...a sign outside your door saying "smile your on camera" works. All our visitors arrive with smiles and are looking all around for what may be a hidden camera. Ours is well hidden.

Mind boggling.

People here consistently worry about their building and stuff--which insurance covers--but not the innocent person inside who's napping or asleep and who could be beaten, stabbed, raped at gunpoint or knife.

THAT is lifelong trauma, while stuff and a building can be replaced and fixed.

Get a monitored alarm system with a loud siren that keeps intruders OUT! Why would anyone want a psycho inside their home for even 5 seconds?????

I have both. So I scare them away and get video of who they were. The doorbell is also very handy for when we're back North and someone comes to the door of our Villages home.

I have SimpliSafe. Best deal out there in my opinion and no contract. I am looking into adding a couple of cameras too. We have been broken into and trust me, if you don't have security now, you will after your home is burglarized, your pets are kicked and let out to never be seen again. All while you are out enjoying your time away from home. The system will send you a cell phone text message seconds after a sensor is triggered.

Does anyone know if they caught these perps? Seems like a very good photo of the lady smiling for the camera.
