Evergreen Buffet

Just came back from Winn Dixie, and noticed a Uhaul
truck by Evergreen Buffet. They were removing the kitchen equipment. Anyone know if they are closing for good, or relocating to another shopping center?

DeniseD 07-16-2016 10:42 AM

We were told they are renovating and will re-open as a restaurant, eliminating the buffet

RickeyD 07-16-2016 10:44 AM

Evergreen Buffet

Or, the cockroach issue caused a big drop in customers. Restaurant owners very rarely tell people their true intentions.

gerryann 07-16-2016 11:07 AM

When the cockroaches closed down the China Buffet in Southern Trace, the same thing happened. They "remodeled" the whole place and reopened.

The place is still almost always empty.

Yep that closing killed it for me. Hope that is not the case for Evergreen and I hope they do not lose the buffet

We still like to go there. The last couple times we went, I have to say they had a pretty decent crowd.

They still have a current health department rating of "U" and a failing score of 65 per the "What the Health FL" app. I hope they have done more than remove the buffet line. They had 10 basic violations, 4 high priority violations, an 2 intermediate violations. 3 of the high priority were repeat violations.

IMO, they should be permanently banned from restaurant ownership and involvement.

Well, dang! That report seems to be in conflict with this one from the State:
Licensing Portal - Inspection Details

The report in your link is for the China Buffet Chinese restaurant on Wedgewood Ln. The report I have noted is for the Evergreen Buffet in Pinellas Plaza.

When I responded earlier to your post, it was when you mentioned China Buffet on Southern Trace so I think the conversation switched to that from Evergreen.

Evergreen Buffet

Dodged a bullet with Giovanni's last week. We went, they are closed for vacation. Then the other couple suggested Red Sauce, I said let's try.... 2 dodged bullets in one night !

Can't bring myself to try again after the cockroaches.

Hubby was thinking about going there for his birthday, now we will choose somewhere else.

In regards to China Buffet (NOT Evergreen)

I truly try to never bash a place.....but, I admit I have not gone back since they reopened about a year and 1/2 ago. I have been tempted to give it a try. However, I walk past it at least 4 times a week. I always look in to see if there's anyone in there. Sometimes there might be one table with someone eating, but usually not a soul in the place. During season when I see the huge amount of diners waiting outside to get in to Giovanni's,(its right next door), I often wonder if any of them think....hey, lets try this place....no waiting. But, I dont think it happens. Giovanni's is packed and China Buffet is empty. I feel bad for the owners, but unfortunately...like you say Gracie, once they have the bug issue, its very hard to survive.

We were just talking about the ratings in NC. If they had to post rating everywhere it would give the restaurant to incentive to get great ratings. It sure has a impact on where I eat when in NC.

Yup. The app that I noted pulls the current report, verbatim. Much more convenient to use.

Convenient if one has a smart phone! lol

But did you see that the report indicates "Met Inspection Standards During This Visit"! Yikes!

I did. Kind of crazy, don't you think? I guess you meet standards unless they close you on the spot.

While I know most all restaurants probably do have roaches I just would not be able to eat in one that has been reported to have a problem!

wendyquat: I had the same thought yesterday after reading the posts. I'll bet every restaurant in the world has similar problems its the degree of attention to the matter that well...... matters.

To me, it's the extent of the problem and how they deal with it. If the owner knows, or should know, about it - but does nothing - that's a big problem for me. He/she doesn't care about their customers health.

For example, I won't frequent McDonalds at Colony Plaza. To be shut down twice in one year clearly reflects the owner's lackadaisical attitude toward cleanliness and public health.

I am certified in food safety and I can tell you that most home kitchens could not pass. McDonald's is extremely busy, I see customers as the dirty ones, leaving their trash on tables. I always see the manager constantly checking everything in the kitchen and the dining area.

True, but some managers and owners do not want to pay for the proper pest control services needed to keep the critters down. All the cleaning in the world is not going to keep them out or kill the ones there.

Stdole 07-17-2016 09:19 AM

Hurry up and use those coupons..& gift cards ... Well second thought don't worry about it, you will be grandfathered in... If you don't a believe me Just
Check with the Village Heath Care System... Their picture will be in the dictionary right beside "BAIT & SWITCH"

bbbbbb 07-17-2016 10:03 AM

You mean those tasty little critters with a glaze and small legs were a problem?
My Uncle, bless is heart was on a troopship in 1917 going over to France etc. First World war. They cooked in large kettles and the cockroaches running across the ceiling would get steamed from the pots and fall in. My Uncle said some of the richer boys on board would throw their soup over the side and not eat. My Uncle and his outdoor friends who camped a lot, hunted a lot, simply took their spoon and flipped the cockroaches over the side. The others refused to eat. After a few days, the rich boys got in gear and flipped the cockroaches out as every one else was doing. End of true story.

After being shut down twice, I would hope that they finally hired staff who know what they are doing. However, i won't be dining there.
