Typos in the Villages Daily Sun

Don't they employ proofreaders? Just one example is "Egg DYING Events", emblazoned on the front of today's Recreation News. Who wants to eat eggs that are "dying"? Too often we see typos that just jump off the page. :ohdear:

Taj44 02-12-2009 10:33 AM

Agreed. Many of us call it the Villages Daily Disappointment, for that, and other reasons.

Bogie Shooter 02-12-2009 11:00 AM

So, don't buy the paper!

:agree:
Spell Check programs are cheaper.
Besides, given today's education standards, what makes you think a proofreader would have caught it?
In fact, I doubt that many readers caught it. Even after the 2nd cup of coffee.:mornincoffee:

JohnN 02-12-2009 11:42 AM

I don't sweat the typos, personally, and spellcheck may not catch "dying" anyway.
.
Can't beat a quarter for a paper these days.
My small town "back home" paper is 50cents, 1/3 the size, doesn't publish on Mondays and it's full of typos too. Go figure.

Russ_Boston 02-12-2009 03:04 PM

Look on the bright side - Send the error into Jay Leno's headlines if it's funny enough! Dying eggs may qualify!

graciegirl 02-12-2009 03:27 PM

Please tell me the correct usage. I am blonde.

billethkid 02-12-2009 05:34 PM

As long as it is not a negative comment about TV...

or one of the businesses they own and sponsor.....it's OK!!!

All newspapers are biased one way or another. They all have typos. If the word is a legitimate spelling but wrong application a spell checker won't pick it up.

In today's acceptance of mediocrity what's wrong with a mispelled werd from time to thyme?

Gracie - I think the correct usage when coloring an egg would be DYEING.

DYING is something we are trying to put off until the last moment so we can enjoy life as long as possible in TV!

GatbTester 02-12-2009 08:53 PM

The Daily Rag

Why does anyone care? The paper, tv, and radio are nothing more than shameful selfless promotion on the developer's part.

graciegirl 02-12-2009 08:58 PM

I really, really, don't understand.

I absolutely agree that they are all promoters of The Villages. But Shameful?

And did you mean selfless, or selfish?

Those danged developers are promoting a good thing in my humble opinion, but what do I know? I have been mispelling dying and dyeing forever.

But Russ, are not all the eggs dead before dyeing? I would assume that an unfertilized egg is not a living being, but though I've admitted fooling around with animal husbandry, I don't know any of that scientific stuff. I figured that was something you medicos would be into.

But it's an interesting concept. If, in fact, eggs were not actually dead until cooked, one could really be dyeing dying eggs as well as hardboiled ones. Always liked to dye a few raw eggs and mix them with the hardboiled ones, just to screw with people's minds.

What is wrong with promoting The Villages?

And just where is a hometown newspaper that doesn't promote everything local?:clap2:

I like The Daily Sun. The price is right (maybe even a bargain). They sure make an effort to include local people and events. Seldom do you see a newspaper that does so much to get local peoples names and pictures in the paper - admit it, it kinda makes you feel good to see your name or picture in the paper. Are the evenhanded and unbiased in their coverage? I think not! They do go out of their way to promote TV (that is good, IMHO) but I sometimes think they go too far to hide the bad news too - accidents by drunks on our streets, break-ins, robberies on the sidewalks at some of our shopping centers, shoddy workmanship or repairs, etc. We are a reflection of society as a whole (maybe a little skewed reflection due to an age differential but still a reflection) so we will have our share of bad news. My criticism is that The Daily Sun does tend to hide that a little. Not being a "shoot the messenger" type, I would not hold it against The Daily Sun if they printed more of the "bad" news. As far as local events go, their calendars of whats coming up and their coverage of what went on in TV are great. Missing typos is generally only a reflection (again IMHO) of the downturn in the quality of education nationally. Typos happen in every newspaper sooner or later. But that is an entirely different subject (or can or worms) that I don't want to open here.

Russ_Boston 02-13-2009 07:46 AM

Muncle - I guess the question is: How long is an unfertilized egg viable? Could it be used for chicken IVF? Would PETA get involved? Would the artificially hatched chickens be accepted by their community? Would they taste differently when they come off of the rotaissarie?

All good questions that have nothing to do with the Daily Sun. ;)

I agree. They offer good coverage of local events albeit the "good" events as opposed to bad news. However, their coverage of national events/politics has been consistently biased in one direction. As someone else said, if you don't like it, don't read it. So I never buy the paper for that reason - I try to get my news from various sources on the internet.

billethkid 02-13-2009 04:51 PM

And which ones are those that are not biased???

None!!!!
If one is seeking unbiased reporting one obviously does not turn on the television set to any station....eh!

Because of TV captive audience and their involvement in banking, renting, liquor stores, wellness center, et al they do borderline conflict of interest on many levels.

With their battery of legal eagles, they know very well just how far to skate on how thin of ice.

If one had a business that perchance competes in any of their enterprises you would full well appreciate it even more!
